6 weeks pregnant sudden gush of blood

Hi all, I’m wondering if anyone can help me as I’m in a bit of a state. I’m 6 weeks pregnant and had a couple of gushes of blood last night so was referred to emergency services and spoke to a doctor who couldn’t give me a definite answer as it was late and she didn’t have the correct equipment etc but told me it sounds like I’m having a possible miscarriage which sent me into a complete panic! She told me to call the early pregnancy assessment services as they would be able to scan me etc so I called, after waiting for a call back I spoke to someone who basically refused to scan me and told me if the bleeding gets worse to call back but there’s nothing I can do at the moment. I’m just so worried as this is my first pregnancy I don’t know what to expect and don’t know if any of this is normal, I feel crazy as if I’m the one person who thinks this is a big deal. Can anyone offer any advice? It would be greatly appreciated, I’m wondering if I take a test will it still be too early that it would still show as positive? I just want to know if I still have my baby or not Sad

I don’t know what to suggest but hope all is well. Xx

Thank you, I hope so too. It’s just the not knowing and my mind is going into overdrive but thank you for your reply xx

Is it bright red or dark? I lost dark blood intermittently for the first 12 weeks - was a sub-something haemorrhage- blood pocket in the uterine lining. DC was born fine xx

AnnaSW1 · 20/12/2020 15:11

I have had this twice. Once it was a miscarriage and once it wasn't. There's really no way to tell apart from waiting. I know that's not that helpful but it's the truth. I hope it goes well for you.

Respectabitch · 20/12/2020 15:12

I'm afraid only time and possibly a scan will tell. A test would likely still come up positive for another few weeks even if the pregnancy is failing as it takes time for HCG to reduce to zero.

Try calling the EPU again in the morning - they usually don't see people on the weekend. 6 weeks is borderline for seeing a heartbeat anyway, so a scan may not prove anything at this point and you would have to return for a second. The other option would be to do blood HCGs 2-3 days apart to see if it is going up or down. It depends on their policy.

Wowcherarestalkingme · 20/12/2020 15:13

I had a very heavy red bleed at 7 weeks. Baby is now over a year. Do you have any pain? Bleeding in pregnancy is very common and doesn’t always mean a miscarriage.

Chloe7737 · 20/12/2020 15:13

At first it was bright red and there was a clot there, it just kept gushing after then throughout the night it got a little more brown and was lighter and became less. Right now I don’t have a lot at all just a little brown when I wipe, I’ve seen a lot of posters that this has happened to a few women so I’m hoping for the best outcome but the doctor has scared me as that was my first thought when this was happening. I wish I could get a scan to ease my mind a little but they are so reluctant to offer anything at all they just said call if the bleeding gets worse that’s all I can do. I can’t stand not knowing but thank for your reply I’m glad everything turned out okay in the end for you xx

I explained to the woman I seen that I had cramping for around 3-4 weeks but this hasn’t been severe, she said that was normal but I didn’t really have any cramping at the time of the bleeding. Thank you all for your replies x

If you can arrange for a private test I would consider doing so. Otherwise if is just a waiting game and you may get a scan on the nhs.

I had two bleeds in my first pregnancy but all was fine and dd is now 4 years old. Bleeds do not always indicate a miscarriage. Try to stay positive, until you know anymore x

Chloe7737 · 20/12/2020 15:26

I’m happy everything worked out for you, hoping for the same here. Thank you for your reply Smile x

You may want to have a private scan. It may be too early to see a heartbeat but you may be able to see if the gestational sac is there or not. Also hcg levels double every 48-72 hours during early pregnancy, see if you are able to get that done. Again probably you will have to go private.

I hope you have the answers soon. Good luck!

PurplePansy05 · 20/12/2020 16:35

OP, EPUs currently offer less scans than usual due to covid restrictions which us unfortunate. Even if they scan you unfortunately if it is a MC, there's nothing that can be done. I'd book a private scan but explain to them what's been happening, a private clinic not a random scan place would be better and they may actually refer you to the EPU if there's something wrong. Perhaps give it a couple of days and see how the situation unfolds naturally?

Chloe7737 · 20/12/2020 16:41

I think that’s my option honestly I’m just worried because the bleeding seems to be slowing down then starting again which isn’t helping. I’m also powerless in this situation so I think that’s what’s getting to me, thank you all again for your replies I really appreciate this.

Call the gp first thing and ask them to arrange an epu appointment for you. I had bleeding at 6 weeks and when I called the epu direct they refused to scan. Gp managed to get me an appointment. I think it's insane that they aren't scanning you. It's worrying and if the worse has happened you need to know sooner rather than later.
Hopefully it's nothing to worry about.

Coffeeeeandcake · 20/12/2020 16:55

Can you call the EPU and ask to be seen?

Chloe7737 · 20/12/2020 17:01

I called today at 8:30 and explained everything was told I would receive a call back and didn’t receive call back until around 2:30. I then explained again to the woman but she didn’t seem phased, I told her there was clots and she said that would be expected which I was surprised about? She said if the bleeding gets worse to call back but they are closed now and the bleeding has started up again bright red, just expecting the worst now but wish I could get some confirmation. I’ll try and call my GP first thing tomorrow but again they aren’t very helpful either.

I've not had this but I was admitted for HG at 6/7 weeks for a few nights for fluids etc and the dr who did my scan was incredibly blasé when I pushed him to tell me if the baby (or baked bean, as it were) was ok considering how ill I'd been. It felt like because it was so early he couldn't really see the drama but in my world I was very much pregnant, so it's definitely not just you who thinks this is a big deal.

Chloe7737 · 20/12/2020 17:38

That’s exactly how I feel @daisyjgrey, I had already got excited and planned so much in my head but at the same time was wary because it’s so early. I don’t have a good feeling about this but I pray I can get booked in somewhere for some confirmation, thank you for letting me know I’m not alone in that feeling.

Hi Chloe, I’m in the same situation! Please let me know how you get on. I don’t know what’s going on with my body!

Chloe7737 · 21/12/2020 06:38

Hi @Court2169! So sorry to hear that Sad I’m going to try my best to speak to my GP today and hopefully I’ll get someone with a bit of sympathy for my situation, I’m so scared though. Has anyone checked you over?

Call you GP ASAP and go in for blood tests. You will then need to get blood tests done again to compare your levels, this is the only way to see if your pregnancy is okay or not at this stage. Your GP will be able to refer you to the EPU. If not go back to A and E and talk to them and they should refer you.

Kamacs12 · 21/12/2020 08:04

It is absolutely not just you that thinks this is a big deal. The moment you find out you’re pregnant their life flashes before your eyes. I’m so sorry you’re going through this scare xx

Court2169 · 21/12/2020 08:47

I went to the hospital yesterday and they were rubbish! They didn’t do a scan, bloods or test. Even when I asked for all of them. They told me I could be having a miscarriage or I might. It be they wasn’t helpful.I left there more upset then I went in. Yesterday I had small clots and quite a bit of bleeding. But Iv woken up today was not as much bleeding at all and it was more stringy then everything and no clots. They hospital think I’m 3 weeks but again they wasn’t sure. They were so rubbish! I also have no cramps which is a good thing too

Hey, this happened to me when I was 7 weeks, you should try get a private scan if you can! I went to the doctors the next day when it happened and baby was fine she then gave me utrogestan to take twice a day for a few weeks, I'm now 14 weeks 5 days and everything is good, I hope it works out for you!
Chloe7737 · 21/12/2020 14:12

Well I called my GP first thing today, they were nice and told me they would try to contact EPU for me. EPU advised their advice still stands and won’t offer me a scan, they told me to take a pregnancy test in a weeks time and if the bleeding gets heavier call back. It makes me feel like such a burden when I am so genuinely worried about something no one else seems to be concerned about! I have booked a private scan but the earliest I could get is the 28th which is in a weeks time, I hope for the best but just feel so down about it all and waiting another week will just make the worrying worse!
