6 weeks pregnant sudden gush of blood

Hi all, I’m wondering if anyone can help me as I’m in a bit of a state. I’m 6 weeks pregnant and had a couple of gushes of blood last night so was referred to emergency services and spoke to a doctor who couldn’t give me a definite answer as it was late and she didn’t have the correct equipment etc but told me it sounds like I’m having a possible miscarriage which sent me into a complete panic! She told me to call the early pregnancy assessment services as they would be able to scan me etc so I called, after waiting for a call back I spoke to someone who basically refused to scan me and told me if the bleeding gets worse to call back but there’s nothing I can do at the moment. I’m just so worried as this is my first pregnancy I don’t know what to expect and don’t know if any of this is normal, I feel crazy as if I’m the one person who thinks this is a big deal. Can anyone offer any advice? It would be greatly appreciated, I’m wondering if I take a test will it still be too early that it would still show as positive? I just want to know if I still have my baby or not Sad

I really feel you you hun! That’s sucks ass so much. Just a waiting game now. I really hope everything goes okay for you i really do!

I'm in the exact same boat and it's been a worrying couple of days! Hang in there. Initally EPU also did not entertain me and were very relaxed about it. When my bleeding was consistently heavy over a week and showing clots, I could not wait any longer and went to Emergency who referred me back to EPU as a walk in. Such a run around! A nurse just looked at my pics and said we can slot you in for a scan in 5 days. I was gobsmacked. Next day I organised a private scan. We didn't get any resolution to why the bleeding was occurring, but it was peace of mind, plus they prescribed 200mg progesterone suppositories that has reduced the bleeding considerably.
There's nothing much anyone can do till about 8 or 10 weeks when things are clearer. I'm really mentally preparing myself for anything and trying to keep relaxed as that's the best for the baby.
I hope this helps!

I also feel super alone and helpless! It's a horrible feeling and I constantly question myself to why there is a mismatch between how (un)seriously the EPU take my problem and how badly I feel about it. All I know is that I need to try my very best to provide a fighting chance to my little one, even if it's being forceful for my needs, I will push for it. It's the most precarious time, so just hang in there and things will unfold in time. Xx

Thank you for your reply @Amen99, I’m so sorry this happened to you. Can I ask did they tell you the baby was ok? Your story sounds so similar to mine, my GP has called again to ask regarding this but they told them the same. If my bleeding gets worse I have to call them back but it seems to have stopped for now, I just can’t stop thinking of the worst which really isn’t helping me.

I've no experience of this but I'm definitely shocked and saddened by the blasé treatment you and @Amen99 have received. What a terrible time to have you hanging on a thread like this. I hope things work out for both of you💐

@Chloe7737 please see this. We are not alone with our EPU experiences

I have just been through this and it was a mc sadly. I had cramping, back pain and red blood. Bleeding just slowing now. They took my bloods 2days apart after I went to A&E and although home tests are still positive the second blood test has shown a drop of hcg. They won’t scan me as only 5.5wks. There is to be a further third test to confirm levels are still dropping. It is sad but I am relieved I know I can get pregnant (my first time) and apparently you are often super fertile the month after miscarrying. This is a really common thing to go through.

Yours may pull through but I just wanted to reassure you as someone who has just gone through it and is coming out the other side. Even if it is the worst news, you will be ok. All is not lost.

Amen99 · 21/12/2020 16:23

They couldn't see a baby, just a sac. So they've asked me to come back in 2 weeks for another scan which will hopefully show a baby and heartbeat. I think you're in a good place if your bleeding has stopped. It could be that your placenta could be forming - there is usually some bleeding then. Also i read that your cervix and that area is super tender and sensitive at this early stages, so you might get some bleeding. I think you will be fine considering it has stopped bleeding. Just rest, eat healthy and try to take it easy. I found that I bleed more when I'm stressed, but it could all be in my mind. :)
What's your next steps? Will you go for a private scan? Seeing how they are, I doubt EPU will scan you since your bleeding has stopped.

Unicorn88 · 21/12/2020 16:23

I'm sorry that your experiencing this.
I don't where u are, but there's any chance you can go straight to the maternity hospital a&e department.
I bleed for first 4 months of my pregnancy, thank god I've a healthy baby now. I went to hospital the first time for reassurance, if I have a chance please go, of course taking due precautions mas, sanitizer and all in place.
Wishing u the best.

MrsMarrio · 21/12/2020 16:29

This is awful treatment. You should have been offered a scan. In general you can visit your gp and they can refer you for a scan at the epu, not sure now with covid restrictions. But I'm so sorry you have been treated so awfully.

lyinginthegutterstaringatstars · 21/12/2020 16:34

If the bleeding starts up again go straight to a&e . Tell them your concerns and that the epu have refused to see you at least twice despite regular bleeding.

Chloe7737 · 21/12/2020 16:44

Yes @Amen99 I have a private scan booked for next Monday, again thank you all for your replies. I expect I’ll be so stressed for the next week but I just have to hope for the best, the bleeding has stopped now which I hope is a good sign?

This is a very good sign that your bleeding has stopped @Chloe7737. Don't worry , it'll all be fine. Be worried if you have severe cramping and constant bleeding, which would signify a mc or ectopic. Other than that it can be sorted out. Be strong my friend! I know it's crazy worrying and it's a super helpless feeling, but it will be fine. Try to take it easy as stress is not good for the baby.

Chloe7737 · 21/12/2020 17:03

Thank you so much @Amen99, I pray everything goes okay for you and you have a healthy baby xx

There's very little they can do this early and a scan would be inconclusive and so not worth the Covid risk to get you in.

I miscarried at this gestation and they wouldn't scan me as nothing would have shown up. It doesn't mean that they don't care or they are being blasé. There is literally nothing they can do.

LittleGungHo · 21/12/2020 17:26

Please check ectopic pregnancy symptoms. I would hope that they would be checking your hormone levels via a blood test if they would not scan you.

This is not to scare you but to make sure you get the treatment that you deserve in a timely fashion. I had an ectopic in May and had my left Fallopian Tube removed in emergency surgery. I was fobbed off by an A&E doctor. I personally only had one gush of blood and then pain in my stomach and down my thigh, symptoms can include shoulder tip pain.
