Anyone with predicted 90th percentile babies? What was the outcome... A bit scared.

Hi everyone.

I hope you can help... I had a growth scan yesterday at exactly 37wks. Told me baby was in the 90+ percentile for head and abdominal measurements with legs just under 50th percentile.

Expected to weigh 7lbs 9oz already.

Does anyone have any experience with this at all? If so, we’re the predictions accurate? It’s making me really nervous... FTM

I can't offer much advice on accuracy of growth scans but my last baby was 9lb 2oz and the birth was completely fine! She came pretty quickly (i think she pretty much birthed herself because she was heavy so the gravity helped) I did have to have a few stitches but I had her in a rush and the midwife told me that if I'd had her with midwife assistance they would have controlled it a bit better and I probably wouldn't have torn at all. She said bigger babies have better shaped heads to birth easier so don't be worried.
I've had a growth scan with this one who is also predicted to be big but obviously I don't know how accurate that is yet.
Don't get too caught up on the size, and remember, winter babies are much better off a bit bigger! Good luck you'll be fine x

They say bigger babies are easier to birth than smaller babies so try not to worry too much.
Also my first was 90th percentile all the way along and she was born at 40+1 and 7lb 14oz. This one is also measuring at 90th percentile, I’m expecting slightly bigger as its second baby so likely to be 8lb+.

Also worth remembering growth measurements and scans are well known for not being accurate.

I was told 95th, sent to see a consultant, my little girl ended up being just over 7lbs so all that worry for nothing

By definition, 10% of people will have a baby on or above the 90th centile. It's nothing to get worried about.

Yep, DS3 born 9lbs7 at 41 weeks.

Mine was just shy of 10lbs, which was quite a bit bigger than the big baby predicted

My first was 99th centile born at 41 weeks 8lb 3oz no problem.
My fourth was 91st came in just over 10lb oof. No worries though midwives have access to good drugs.

All of my DC were big. Longest labour was 8 and a half hours (almost 9lb, first baby). The biggest baby (a shade off 10lb) took two and half hours. I was fine, they were fine.

The midwives I knew took the view that if you grew a big one, you would, on the whole, be equipped to birth it. It was the difficult lies (transverse, head pushed against mother's hip joint etc) that seemed to worry them more.

My DS was 9lb 5oz and it was a much easier delivery than my DD who was much smaller. No stitches needed either! Please try not to worry

DD was 9lb 3oz and on the 97th. I was really worried about the birth too (also ftm) but managed to deliver vaginally with help from ventose and episiotomy. Both instrument delivery and episiotomy terrified me before going into labour but it was honestly fine and I was just sore for a couple of days afterwards.

Most of the ladies in my Nct group had been predicted large babies but I was the only one that had a really big one - all the others were around 7lb. So the scans can get it wrong even though they didn't in my case.

My 6lb12oz baby at 36.5 weeks had been predicted to be over 10lbs. She was 7lbs predicted at my 32 week scan. Scans aren't away right.

I had a scan at 36 weeks saying baby was big (>99th centile) I absolutely freaked out and that night waters broke and 2 days later DS was here! He was 6lb 13oz so a good size, he was well over 9lb on his due date. Thank god he was early! All fine through :) you’ll be ok!

I measured at 95th centile all along. Baby was 8.12. I was told I had to be induced due to babies size so the Labour was totally shitty; they said he would be at least 10lb, so I was a little fucked off when he was born at 8.12!! I was fine within a few weeks though, and would want to do it naturally next time!

IME not accurate and also not necessarily bad if baby is big.

Midwives had concerns about my baby being too small. She was born on the 75th venture for weight and off the top of the chart for length.

Birth was easy as pie. Much easier than her 7lb 5oz brother.

Every situation is different but I hope this reassured you that all can go smoothly in these circumstance.

I am tall and was told by HV and scan with my first that he was tiny/small underweight etc for mine and partners heights. He was 6 13.

With second I was told this baby is going to be massive at least a 10lb er. She was 8 1/2.

Ended up 2 going into labour weeks early. 7lb 8oz. 50% for length and weight but 99% for head circumference.

Predicted just under the 90th on four separate scans during pregnancy, the last being at 40+3. Born on the 13th! No idea where it went wrong but completely inaccurate for me, as all my other scans were so consistent I really didn’t think it could be SO wrong, wish I hadn’t got myself so worked up about it!

Mine was almost 11lb and had a c section.

BUT the good side to that was she ate and slept well early on as a bit bigger so it helped afterwards.

I was delivered 3 weeks early with my last, as they were so concerned about her size. She was 7lb 7oz!! But she did have a massive placenta that they really struggled to deliver - and she was very very long, so some of the measurements were right and others way off.

I'd take it with a pinch of salt and try not to worry.

Ds1 was measured at 90th centile, he was 8 days late and 8lbs12oz

Ds2 was measured at 50th centile, he was 9 days late and 8lbs8oz.

My DD was born on the 100th centile at 38 weeks, she was 8lb 10.5 oz...
it scares me now to think how big she would have been if I went to 40weeks or longer!
I did have a CSection but I had GD and I'm only 5ft so they was worried she was going to get stuck.
I'm currently 26weeks with DD2 so worried she'll be even bigger haha

Dc1, 9lb, emcs as I failed to progress with labour. Dc2, 10.9lb, elcs at 38 weeks as she was transverse Dc3, 9.14lb, elcs at 39 weeks. My growth scan with dc4 predicted that I clearly like to grow big babies, he weighed 11.6lb and was delivered at 38 weeks by elcs. All of mine ate well and slept well, bonus of a big baby!

My eldest was 10lb at 39 weeks. His head circumference was above the line. It sounds enormous, but I had been told to expect a 14lb baby. Scan and midwife measurements are often hugely inaccurate

One of mine was over the 90th centile, his head was over 95th. He was over 10lbs was stayed over the 90th centile. Now all grown up at 6ft 3in. He was chubby until about 5 or 6. He was the biggest of my children and was the fastest delivery, went into hospital at 10 am, had my waters broken about an hour later and he was born at 5 pm. Had over 24 hr labours with his siblings and the smallest one ended up as EMCS. My Consultant wanted him induced a few days earlier but I persuaded him to give me a few more days.

He was born naturally at 40+1 weighing 7lb6 so exactly average.
