Scan photos...

Sorry this is a bit of a ridiculous question but I’m just wondering, is it cheeky of me to ask the sonographer for extra scan photos? She gave me 4 at the last scan which was brilliant as I wasn’t expecting any with it being an early scan. However, we want to announce to family with a special box each with scan photo in on Christmas Eve. There’s 4 sets of parents and 2 siblings plus we’d obviously like a picture for ourselves. Would I be ok asking for 8 🙈 Obviously if not I’ll get copies but I’d just love to have the original photos for people.

I’m yorkshire and have to pay £5 for one.

since1994 · 09/12/2020 17:53

In the RVI you're supposed to buy them too. There's a machine in the antenatal clinic to purchase tokens. Some sonographers are lovely and just give you them.

I'm just mentioning RVI as I can see you say you're in the NE!

Twizbe · 09/12/2020 17:54

With my first they were free. For my second we were supposed to pay. We got the tokens all ready. My DD didn't like scans though and flatly refused to be seen. She actually turned her back to us during the 12 week scan. She curled herself into the tightest ball for the 20 week scan.

The sonographer couldn't really get a good photo so just gave them to us for free lol

@since1994- I go to Shotley Bridge Hospital ☺️

In my first pregnancy, you could buy as many as you wanted from a little kiosk in the reception. In this pregnancy, because of covid, they are printing the pictures out for you but you only get one.

DinosaurGrrrrr · 09/12/2020 18:09

They are £5 at the clinic I had my scans but during covid they waived the charge as you couldn’t take your husband/partner in with you. I’d be very embarrassed asking for 8 pictures at an nhs scan, I accepted whatever they printed off each time. Sometimes if I was lucky they’d print 2 different images off, I didn’t ask though. If you want to send your scan photo far and wide then scan or take a pic of it (the print out) and get it printed yourself. It’s the NHS not a private company.

While I understand this now, there’s no need to be rude. I wasn’t aware that anyone was ever required to pay for scan photos. No one has ever mentioned it to me before and this is my first pregnancy. I was given 4 scan photos at my last scan and haven’t received any letters with information stating prices for scan photos, as far as I knew, you were given the photos and that was that. I’m more than happy to accept whatever they offer or pay for the photos I want if that’s the case.

@DinosaurGrrrrr

Very rude, she was only asking, its her first baby aswell, no one knows what goes on with all of that or what to exspect, to ask for 8 isnt embarrasing at all, for all you know some hospitals would maybe say yes due to covid, lifes hard ebough, she has every right, dont comment if theres nothing nice to say, be more thoughtful

@HappyDaze90 lets hope you get more photos, or even if you do have to print them out, its nice to give that sort of surprise to your family, enjoy 😊

HappyDaze90 · 09/12/2020 18:33

@Fairywings123 Thank you! It feels like we’ve been waiting for absolutely ages to tell anyone. Now that it’s less than two weeks away, I’m so nervous 😂 But it’s going to be lovely and such an amazing time of year to be able to surprise them- especially after the year we’ve all had! 💕

@HappyDaze90 im so pleased for you! Only a few weeks now eeek! There all gonna be soo over the moon, so nice of you to think of doing that for your family, let me know how it goes, massive congratulations too 😊💝

LemonRizzle · 09/12/2020 19:41

At my 12 week scan (East Anglia) I had the choice of 3 different photos to print. They asked how many photos I wanted and then I paid at the machine (took cash or card). I only had 4 and the machine only sold up to 4 but I saw another lady pay for 8 (2 separate transactions) and they were more than happy to supply them. They are £3 a photo. They were giving a free photo when partners couldn't attend scans but this was withdrawn when the rules changed. It's your baby, your family, your memories, there's no harm in asking and I'm sure it won't be a problem x

HappyDaze90 · 09/12/2020 19:55

Thank you @LemonRizzle
Like I’ve said, I’m more than happy to pay for the scan photos, I just wasn’t aware until this post that it was the done thing 😂 We are making the family members- parents and sisters- a little box with the scan photo and I’m baking little ‘Oh Baby’ cookies to go in them so want to make sure I’ve got enough photos for everyone.

Hey!
I’m 13 weeks with my first too, had my scan last week and had no idea you had to pay for the pics until I saw the payment machine when checking in for my appointment. Our sonographer didn’t ask what we wanted she just printed 4 out and told me to only pay for 2 which I thought was nice of her! I’m in Surrey
Hope your scan goes well and congrats! X

YouDidWHATNow · 09/12/2020 20:23

I'm from the NE OP and our trust allows you 4 photos then you can pay for extra if you wish. Please just ask, it's not an imposition it takes a few minutes (they'll be printing ones anyway) and you have to pay at reception. Also an option is to take the scan pictures to a professional photo printing place inside a supermarket or somewhere and ask for proper copies, they'll do them on the photo paper!

ShalomToYouJackie · 09/12/2020 20:25

I'm in Bath and my 12 week scan letter said it was £15 for photos but when I went in October it was actually free and I got about 10 photos

Serafinaaa · 09/12/2020 20:25

At the standard 12 week and 20 week scans I had to pay £3 per photo.

I was given them for free at extra scans needed for medical reasons as they were done in a different area of the hospital which wasn't set up for taking money.

ShalomToYouJackie · 09/12/2020 20:26

They did that because it was their new policy with Covid btw

YouDidWHATNow · 09/12/2020 20:27

PS. my friend during lockdown wanted 24 copies to send to relatives and friends via the post. She paid for them, it was no problem at all. Sonographer spent the time waiting for the photos to print to chat to her about her about how she was coping with lockdown with her husband working away and she had previous mental health problems with depression and with this being during lockdown and being pregnant with her first, and it got her to open up about finding it tricky and relapsing a little with her mood and the sonographer midwife referred her for extra support from the perinatal mental health team, which is exactly what she needed. So, don't always assume you're wasting their time. Sometimes it can be a blessing, and all NHS staff are paid to be there for 13 hours sometimes. You are not wasting our time, we are there regardless and we are in this profession because we care and I personally would do anything if it made someones day that little bit brighter, including printing 8 photos that will take me a few minutes if that.

HappyDaze90 · 09/12/2020 20:42

@YouDidWHATNow Thank you! Lovely hearing from someone who is up here to and a health professional ☺️ I’m absolutely fine either way, I don’t mind paying if that’s what’s required and I likewise don’t mind going and printing them out at Asda across the road! I’m just so excited about telling the family and I know they’ll all want a photo (first grandchild in my parents case) Ooh, it’s all getting so exciting!

@bellil Thank you! And congrats to you too! I hope everything goes amazing for you. Have a lovely Christmas with your bump ☺️💕

Ours were £12 per digital download via some app you have to download and they give you a code to get your images.

I had a lot of growth scans and some of them got some nice images (a foot and a particularly perfect profile view at about 24 weeks) and the sonographer just printed them out and gave them to me as they were nice! (Pre covid)

ivfbeenbusy · 09/12/2020 20:50

Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to get one photo and then just take a photo of it using a camera/your phone and get that printed???

ivfbeenbusy · 09/12/2020 20:52

Will they be ok with me taking a photo during the scan?! Sorry, can you tell it’s my first 🙈😂

No they won't let you take a photo during the scan 🤷‍♀️

You'll most likely get one photo - take a photo of THAT and get it printed at boots....

MaverickDanger · 09/12/2020 20:55

@ivfbeenbusy it’s different at different hospitals. I was told to take photos of the screen if I wanted a photo as they didn’t print them for free.

lucymagoo · 09/12/2020 21:15

I'm in Hertfordshire and didn't have to pay for ours, no mention of it. We got given 3 at the 12 week scan

MsHedgehog · 09/12/2020 22:12

My hospital doesn't even give you the option to print - they let you take photos of the screen at the end.
