Sorry this is a bit of a ridiculous question but I’m just wondering, is it cheeky of me to ask the sonographer for extra scan photos? She gave me 4 at the last scan which was brilliant as I wasn’t expecting any with it being an early scan. However, we want to announce to family with a special box each with scan photo in on Christmas Eve. There’s 4 sets of parents and 2 siblings plus we’d obviously like a picture for ourselves. Would I be ok asking for 8 🙈 Obviously if not I’ll get copies but I’d just love to have the original photos for people.

I never got offered one during my early reassurance scans. I did ask them during the scans to confirm my miscarriage 5 weeks later if they kept them on file. They said they did but when I asked if I could have a copy . I wanted make the Baby's shadow box I was told no because it didn't even resemble a Baby. Yes it was just a blob but that scan picture would've meant the world to us

I’m north east and was given scan photos at every appointment including growth scans! They were being generous at the hospital I gave birth in due to COVID restrictions and providing lots of photos as I had to attend alone for all scans at the time. I’m sure I got 5 images at my 12 week! No harm in asking for more :)

@Youvegotafriendinme

Also have to pay and it’s £5 a photo. I’m in Kent
I'm in Kent too and got 4 with no charge. How strange it's different. I offered to make a donation and she said no because of Covid they were accepting money...this was in October. I have 20 wk scan tomorrow so maybe rules changed now & I'll be asked to cough up Which btw I absolutely agree with Like someone else mentioned...it's a billable extra Smile

*weren't accepting money

It will depend on your area. I’m Manchester based and we got one free one and any extras we wanted were £4 each, you could buy as many as you wanted I think, I just paid for one extra one for my mum.

In nhs Scotland I was given 2 images at scan appt (diff views). They do not have the option to buy or get more. I'd definitely say the best option is for your to scan the image and print copies at Asda's..

As others have said, the photo paper type means it fades fast so a reprinted photo is better. It's also really hard to take a good phone image of, so better scanned in to print

@ Bruce2 I had to pay at my 12 and 20 week scan, same price same hospital. But I’ve had scans at 8, 24, 30 and I’ll have another at 34 and they’ve given me a free one each time but they were all at a different hospital. Strange how it’s so different isn’t it?
Hope your next scan goes well

Thank you. It went well fortunately and again when I offered to pay for photos or make donation I was told no, they stopped that during Covid. very grateful to the kind NHS staff who printed out lots of photos for us. Hopefully when I go in for 34 week scan in March time they'll be accepting donations then and I can make up for the ones I've been given free

I had my first in Glasgow (Queen Elizabeth Hospital) and there used to be a donation box at the reception of scan unit but things changed now...it was 5 years ago. But the nurses there were fab too, they wrote a Merry Xmas message at bottom on photo "from" the baby to our daughter so we could give it as a surprise on Xmas day from her pending baby sister.

Usually have to pay for us too - southern health nhs ...
but when I went the machine to pay was out of order

She gave me 3 photos

kirinm · 10/12/2020 15:32

I'm London and you don't get any pictures. You can take a picture of the screen though.

RBaims · 11/12/2020 23:41

I had scan photos given to me at the two early pregnancy ones (all NHS). For the 12 week yesterday the appointment letter said they can be purchased for £10 at reception, but the sonographer just gave us one, we didn't ask. But definitely do ask, worst case you can get them from reception.
