Hi all

Was after some advice...packing some baby clothes and wondered if newborn sizes would be ok or whether I should also pack a few 0-3mnths clothes too?

So confusing! I've also packed both size 0 and size 1 nappies

I would pop in a few bits of 0-3 months as well. When my baby was born I had both with me and as it turned out he definitely wouldn't have fitted in the newborn stuff! It's not like they take up much room in the grand scheme of things.

Stargazer87 · 17/09/2020 07:53

I'm going for a mixture of newborn and up to 1 month, I've even bought some sleepsuits in both sizes just to cover all bases as it's tricky to know what will fit!

scrivette · 17/09/2020 07:54

It's really hard to say. The newborn clothes swamped DS1 but DS2 had to go into 0-3. Neither were expected to be particularly large/small at birth.

MarshmallowsOnToast · 17/09/2020 07:59

I took 0-3 as I knew I was having a larger baby.

He was 9lb 7oz and 0-3 swamped him so honestly I wouldn't bother with 0-3 or just take 1.

The first size was plenty big enough as you can see in this pic. It had excess round the sides.

MarshmallowsOnToast · 17/09/2020 08:01

"First Size" I got from George at ASDA. I think it's the same as "Newborn"

TheMagicDeckchair · 17/09/2020 08:13

We took newborn and I think up to 1 month? Not all the shops do that size. Newborn fitted perfectly, she was 7lbs 9oz.

The 0 in 0-3 is a bit misleading really as they are on the larger side.

RoseGoldEagle · 17/09/2020 08:15

I had 8 and half ish pound babies and the newborn size was fine for the hospital but didn’t fit for all that long- there was one newborn sleepsuit I bought that didn’t fit at all, they quite quickly went into 0-3 months. This time I‘ve just packed a few of each.

itshappened · 17/09/2020 08:20

Don't bother with 0-3... they will seem enormous on a newborn unless you are having a whopper! But I would recommend 3 tiny baby sleep suits and vests as well as newborn. Babies under 8 pounds usually fit tiny baby better in my experience.

Caspianberg · 17/09/2020 08:24

I would suggest the up to 1 month size from M and s. At 8lb8, the newborn size was a tight stretch here, but the up to 1 month lasted a few weeks.
The 0-3 month would have been fine here though also.

Rough sizes are:
Newborn -50cm
1 month - 54cm
0-3 months -56-62cm

My newborn was 53cm born. And was 60cm at 4 week check up.

At 4 months now he is 71cm, wearing 6-9month clothing, some 9-12. So really recommend not buying too much in advance if each size incase they plough through them and in different size at different season

FolkSongSweet · 17/09/2020 09:21

Different shops have different weights for the different sizes, so check the labels, but in most shops 0-3 is actually 11lbs+ so in all likelihood will be too big for your baby. Newborn is usually up to 9lbs so I’d take a mix of those and “up to 1 month” size.

FolkSongSweet · 17/09/2020 09:22

PS my DS was 8lb 12 and 91st centile for height at birth and fitted the John Lewis newborn size in hospital.

Superscientist · 17/09/2020 09:24

I took mostly "first size" (under 9 lbs) plus one set of 0-3 months. She was 6lb 13 and the first size were on the big side and the 0-3 month were huge on her. We considered getting some tiny baby clothes when she was born and the first size was too big but as she was close to the 7lb limit most of them had we chose to stick with big 1 month clothes. She is now 6 weeks and still comfortably fits them!

well, my experience was opposite.

Took all newborn. Ds was 10lbs, and the newborn didn't fit. Dh had to bring in 0-3 which were snug (!) and I had to cut toes off all his 0-3 as his feet were so long.
I had 2 further children and never used any of my newboran clothes.

Weight is probably less relevant than shape, mine were all very long and thin. (skinned rabbits Grin) so the all in one clothes were baggy but not long enough.

jackfruitz · 17/09/2020 09:27

I took 0-3 months and newborn with me as I was expecting baby to be 7lb, she was 5lb 13oz so the clothes were huge and the nappies kept leaking as they were too big! Definitely take 0 nappies and first baby unless you do know your baby will be big!

PrayingandHoping · 17/09/2020 09:29

Depends what size you think your baby will be

I knew mine was going to be small so took Tiny Baby and Newborn. Tiny baby swamped her!!

YoBeaches · 17/09/2020 09:32

I'd agree with newborn too, unless you have reason to believe it's a big baby. My dd was 6.15 and the newborn were loose but fitted (she had long legs) the 0-1 or 0-3 would have been enormous on her.

Deff size 0 nappies too you don't want leakage if poss.

Ah precious babies, good luck :)

2andahalfpints · 17/09/2020 09:33

Tiny baby and newborn

KitKatastrophe · 17/09/2020 09:35

0-3 are pretty big unless you have a huge baby. My babies were pretty average size (7lbs ish and 8lbs ish) and werent in 0-3 for a good few weeks after birth.

At the end of the day if their hospital outfit is a tiny bit big or a tiny bit small it's not really going to matter too much.

NameChange30 · 17/09/2020 09:38

My babies were 9lb4 and 9lb1, and wore newborn at the beginning, apart from the JoJo sleepsuit we had in newborn size, which was too short (the JoJo sleepsuits seem to come up short and wide).

I would take some newborn and some 1 month size. Unless you know you're having a very small baby (in which case take tiny baby and newborn) or a very big baby (in which case take 1 month and 0-3).

MrssC92 · 17/09/2020 09:45

I was the same as @jackfruitz, I was expecting a big baby (bump was measuring on the 90th centile), but baby ended up being below the 10th centile at 5lb12. If it makes you feel better, pack a couple of 0-3 months, but definitely be prepared and take some tiny baby and up to 1 month clothes. My baby was in tiny baby for 6 weeks and shes still in up to 1 month size now at 3 and a half months. If you don't use the tiny baby you can maybe look at donating them to the hospital or save them for any future babies or a friend so they don't go to waste.

movingonup20 · 17/09/2020 09:48

Unless there's reason to believe you are having a large baby (gestational diabetes, you yourself were over 9lbs) newborn nappies and newborn (0-1 month) clothes are fine. I had to send my mother to the shop to buy tiny baby size because newborn swamped her (hospital provided preemie nappies and an emergency outfit as it was not expected but actually I was tiny so midwife should have warned me)

movingonup20 · 17/09/2020 09:51

I think the sizes may have changed though, newborn was up to 54cm then, tiny baby was 50cm

New2020 · 17/09/2020 10:23

Thanks everyone that's so helpful!

With nappies do newborn babies tend to go into size 1?

OP posts:
NameChange30 · 17/09/2020 10:29

DD (11 days old, was 9lb1 at birth) is in size 1 nappies, the packet says 4-9lb so I thought they might be a bit small for her but they're the perfect fit for now.

I have another brand of nappies which is also size 1 and it says 4-11lb on the packet, they're not as good a fit.

I think you can get size 0 for really small babies.

Yes! The Jojo sleepsuits are such a weird shape. The feet especially seem so small.
