How long after a sweep did you go into labour?

I had a sweep last night after going into hospital for reduced movement. I was 2cm dilated and having regular braxton hicks.

Just wondering if the sweep worked for you and how long it took to go into labour afterwards?

I had my sweep on Friday morning at around 11am and then went into labour on Saturday night at 11:30 pm... good luck xx

donkeyoatey · 12/07/2020 19:50

About 10 minutes later.

Nibblingoncrumpets · 12/07/2020 20:17

I just posted about this! Dying for answers - just had a sweep today at 40+4 and since had bloody mucus and now pink tinged loo roll when I wipe. Are you having any of these sorts of things!? I am so optimistic due to all the cramping. Good luck!

OneTooManyBathtimes · 12/07/2020 20:21

30 mins later, although I was 4cm dilated and apparently already having contractions, I just couldn t feel them. Gave birth 4 hours 11 mins after the sweep

MUMMA2BEX · 12/07/2020 20:25

@nibblingoncrumpets

I woke up this morning to a lot of blood on a pad and blood when I wiped but not sure if this is just because my cervix is obviously sensitive as it doesn't look mucus-y as you would expect a show to. It's been about 20 hours and I have period like pain so hoping something happens soon🤞🏽

In the car park on the way home (about 5 mins).

Good luck!!!

I hope so for you OP! Curious to know with the other posters what symptoms they had after and how far along they were

My labour was more long than anything else. I was due on the Sunday 30th august 2015, I was booked in for a sweep originally on the Wednesday, but I started having contractions on the Tuesday so I decided to see if things would progress naturally. They didn't so I ended up having a sweep at 3pm on the Friday (40+5).
I got to the hospital at 9 that evening, was in the birth centre by 10.30, had my waters broken around 2am, then gave birth at 6.58am the Saturday morning (40+6).

@happymummy12345

Can I ask why you went to the hospital if you had to have waters broken?

grace1991 · 12/07/2020 20:39

I had two sweeps a week ago. Still absolutely nothing has changed. Pointless !! X

Lunalady21 · 12/07/2020 20:41

I was 6 days late .. 2cm dilated .. had 5 unsuccessful sweeps and an unsuccessful start of labour and ended up with a csection .. it will come when it's ready and not a moment sooner I found this out the hard way .. and I did all the tricks to make it happen and nada! Sorry ladies not helpful at all but don't get your hopes up that a sweep is always successful!

Rosieredapples · 12/07/2020 20:43

I didn't, it was extremely uncomfortable and did nothing for me.

Nibblingoncrumpets · 12/07/2020 20:45

Did anyone with the unsuccessful sweeps have “symptoms” after like cramping or bloody show

Sixtyfourzoolane · 12/07/2020 20:45

I had one at 39 weeks, was 2-3cm and favourable. Kept busy for the rest of the day and went for a long brisk walk that evening and woke up in the middle of the night in labour!

Harryno · 12/07/2020 20:47

I was 41+1, brutal sweep at 10am, 23:30 period like cramps, 4:30am baby born!

ker89 · 12/07/2020 20:49

I had one at 40+1 which was followed by loosing my mucus plug/bloody show and another at 40+4. Baby was born 3 days later so I can't say they really worked for me either!

I had on and off contractions for almost a week. Latent labour I think it was called? My midwife said sweeps can sometimes just irritate your uterus and not do much else which is not what you want!!
Beach11 · 12/07/2020 20:51

Didn’t work for either pregnancy 😭

Yeah, I lost my mucus plug 2 days later, and then baby came after 10.5 hours of labour 4 days after that. No idea when my waters broke, didn't think they had until o was at the hospital already 9cm dilated and was told they'd gone.
Shelby30 · 12/07/2020 22:42

I don't think they work to be honest. For some people they must just be just about to go in to labour.

I had one on day before due date. She said ilI was very favourable and she though I would go in day or2. I did all the other things to help, long walk, bounce on the ball, have sex, eat pineapple, have spicy food. Still nothing lol. I ended up being induced at41wks.

My sister though had a sweep and was in labour a few hours later. She was very close though already 3-4cm dilated and had been like that for days.

mumworkstudywine · 12/07/2020 23:20

I had a sweep at about 9am when I was pregnant with DS, I then lost my plug and started contracting at around 11am that day! However I did have a massive cry in between and I genuinely think the hormones from that triggered the labour, as my midwife told me at the sweep that I was no where near having the baby and she would book me in for an induction for the following week if hadn't have arrived!!

Nibblingoncrumpets · 13/07/2020 04:19

OP how are you feeling?

I’ve been having v painful cramps all night but nothing yet.

@mumworkstudywine

It’s funny though - my first baby I was told cervix v favourable etc and sweep was actually done early, 39 weeks. Fully expected it to work and it didn’t. This time, past 40 weeks and cervix was closed, high up etc and this is much, much more effective in terms of the bloody mucus and all the cramps. God knows what the reasoning is

Siobhan1989 · 13/07/2020 09:14

I’ve had one at 40+5 and another at 41 weeks exactly. Had a big mucus bloody show at the first one and similar after the second. I’m currently 40+10 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

Siobhan1989 · 13/07/2020 09:16

Oh and apparently i was 2cm at the first and 3.5cm at the second 😅 induction is booked for Wednesday x
