If you heard ‘girl’ at 20 week scan...

Had 20 week scan the other day and the ultrasonographer said she ‘thought it looked like a girl’ but never gives guarantees with girls. I asked if the baby was in a strange position which might make it harder to tell, but she said no, position was perfect and she’d had a good look. I feel a bit like I’m still not sure now! Is it normal to be told this at a 20 week scan? I completely appreciate nothing is 100%, and I don’t mind in the slightest either way, main thing was checking the baby was fine which she (?) was, just wondering if other people who were told they were having girls were told in a more definite way? Thanks!

I was also told at my 20 weeks scan it looked like a girl but she wouldn't say 100% as baby legs was closed I had another scan 2 weeks later and told a boy and was shown definitely a boy so if you can get another scan I was given mine for medical reasons, but I till you know for certain I wouldn't pick her pink bits up

Starburst12 · 30/05/2020 18:31

I had a private scan at 16 weeks who said it’s a girl. I double checked at my 20 week scan and the sonographer said “congratulations, you’re having a girl”. So it was a bit more certain than the way you were told?
I’ve looked at boy potty shots and they look very different to girls so I think maybe she worded it like that because they are never 100%?

Tomasinaa · 30/05/2020 18:34

Were you given print outs from the scan? In my experience they take or try to take a deliberate photo of their bottom (aka the potty shot). And it's pretty easy to determine which is which. So I assume you didn't get that photo?

Congrats OP Flowers

I was told both of my mine were boys and they were, I also know someone who was told she was having a boy at a later scan she was told she was having a girl.

You could have a private scan in a couple of weeks if you want to know.

Good luck.

Thanks Starburst- that’s kind of how I expected to be told to be honest! That’s good to know Goldenmother- we have a girl and a boy already (didn’t find out for either of them, just fancied a change this time!), so don’t really need to buy anything, I don’t mind at all but would feel weird thinking it’s a girl for the next 20 weeks and then a boy appearing! I almost wish we hadn’t found out again I think I might try and get a private scan, if they start doing them again at some point.

I was told boy at 20w with my 7mo and he is most definitely a boy!

userabcname · 30/05/2020 18:37

*I was told girl!! Sorry. They got it wrong.

DominaShantotto · 30/05/2020 18:38

I was told probably a girl with DD1 who was being a little sod at the scan - shoved her hand out to block the view and then rolled over so we could only see her arse (she's not changed - she's still a sod now). DD2 was more definite as she pretty much starfished to give us a full on view!

islandislandisland · 30/05/2020 18:39

Hmm I was told 'it looks like a girl' at a 16 week and 20 week scan and assumed they just didn't like to give a definitive answer, now I'm wondering if maybe they just couldn't say for sure!

RoseGoldEagle · 30/05/2020 18:41

Tomasinaa- no, the only picture she gave me was of the head and half the body, so no bottom half included at all. I know, I thought at 20 weeks it should be reasonably clear. I’d get it if she said- the baby’s legs are crossed, or he/she is in a strange position, but she said the position was perfect, her words were ‘they look like girly bits. If it’s a boy I’d tell you 100% for sure, but I can’t give a guarantee for a girl. But it does look like a girl.’

KatnissK The more I’ve been reading the more common it is for that to happen than I ever realised!!

My son was also a girl at 20 weeks. We found out at 36 weeks that she was a he.

Craiglang · 30/05/2020 18:49

It took us going three times for a gender scan to get a tentative "90% sure it's a girl." DD just didn't want to cooperate or show the right angle. With DS1 and DS2 they had things fully on display from the moment the device touched my belly, their legs were spread and I didn't need the woman to tell me!

PurBal · 30/05/2020 18:53

My brother heard both boy and girl at his wife's scan... it couldn't be both obviously. (It's a girl)

New2020 · 30/05/2020 19:06

We had a NIPT test done at 10 weeks and found out from a blood test that it's a girl! I'm not sure if that would change as it's based on DNA bit not sure

Billyjoearmstrong · 30/05/2020 19:09

I knew I was having a girl early as I had the harmony test.

At 20 week scan, I mentioned it and she said “no, it’s a boy” Confused

I then said we’d had the harmony test and you know, it’s DNA had been tested. She then had another look and said “oops, yes, there you go. Girl bits. My mistake”.

Mucklowe · 30/05/2020 19:13

I was told at 20 weeks that it was a girl, then again at my rescan at 23 weeks. At my 25 week midwife appointment, she said the heartbeat "sounded like a girl" - whatever that means! I guess the proof of the pudding will be in the birthing Grin

Alychloe · 30/05/2020 19:31

I had a 17 week private scan and they confirmed it was a girl, then I had my 20 week scan yesterday and she said “nothing between the legs so yes girl” then I asked if it was 99.9% and she said yes haha.

teacuptale · 30/05/2020 19:36

At my 20 week scan I think she phrased it as ‘looks to be a girl’, although I may be misremembering as it was a stressful scan. I had another couple of scans shortly after where I asked again and each sonographer was sure I was having a girl and they were right.

thetangleteaser · 30/05/2020 19:38

I think sometimes the sonographers are wary to sound definite as obviously sometimes it is wrong. At my scan the sonographer said “in my opinion it’s a boy” and it was but I did notice how carefully it was worded! You can’t blame them though as people take their word as gospelSmile

Florencenotflo · 30/05/2020 20:17

Yeah with both of my 20 week scans they said 90% girl! Dd1 was in an awkward position and they said that boy bits can be hidden very easily.

Dd2 was in a better position but they still said 90% sure. I had further scans and they confirmed it again as I was further along.

Millie2013 · 30/05/2020 20:20

We had “i can’t see anything to indicate that it’s a boy, but can’t be sure”
“It” was a girl Grin

notanotherpandemic · 30/05/2020 20:22

My first daughter I was told she was a boy for definite at my 20 week scan and she is certainly not a boy. She was wearing boys clothes for a couple of months Grin and had a prawn with a blue trim!

Had a private scan with my second daughter at 16 weeks and was told for certain she was a girl and the same at my 20 weeks scan and thankfully she was a girl.

Gin4thewin · 30/05/2020 20:23

16 weeks i was told DD 'looks like a girl'. Guessed it was because they cant get in the shit if its wrong then, i asked at 20 week scan for her opinion too and she said the time

Ughmaybenot · 30/05/2020 20:28

It’s not an exact science I guess... better that she says that rather than being ‘sure’ and then being wrong. My brother was told he was having a son twice, 20 weeks and 25 weeks. He had a daughter 😂
