Newborn or 0-3 months?

Almost 25 weeks and haven't bought clothing for baby. Now starting to panic as everything is selling out, I can barely find any newborn. Will I be ok with 0-3 months clothing?

Mine was 7.3 pounds 50th centile and due to curling his legs and arms we needed newborn for about 3-4 weeks. After that he was in 0-3 until 2 months, and at 4 months is now wearing 6-9.

DS was 8lb12oz and he was still in newborn / first size for a few weeks.

TheOrigBrave · 03/04/2020 22:15

I was advised not to get too much newborn but actually ended up buying quite a bit for both my boys (both about 7lb).

Sure they weren't going to trip over but it was nice they had something that fitted them for the first couple of months.
I'd get a mix of both but don't wash the newborn things unless you need them. Then you can easily return.

Check Ebay or facebook marketplace for bundles of baby clothes. I bought the majority of stuff for my two second hand because I knew they'd be in it for such a short time.

@DontBuyLangClegCashmere I'm in the Hampshire area. That's very kind of you.

I've looked at Facebook marketplace but surely going to pick up baby clothes or items isnt classed an essential activity? I've found a few items I'd like to pick up but am unsure with the lock down.

You do have a few weeks yet before you need clothes, but I think to be honest clothing your child is fairly essential. If you're concerned though, a lot of people will accept a little more money to post items.

Another vote for the 'up to 1 month' size.

I think Next and M&S do it & they were a much better fit than 0-3.

My babies were bigger though 8lb 10oz and 9lb!

Slightly worried baby number three is going to be HUGE 😂

pottypotamus · 04/04/2020 11:28

Yes I also agree that 0-3m clothes for both of mine were absolutely huge and both didn't start wearing them until 6-8 weeks old.

whoonearthknows876152 · 04/04/2020 11:33

We didn’t move into 0-3 months until she was 12 weeks old, we’ve only just moved into 3-6 months and she’s 7 months old! I knew she was going t be small, Same as my first. I bought 3/4 tiny baby sleepsuits and body grows, she was in those for 2/3 weeks, then she went into newborn / up to one month..

The issue we found was people buying tons of clothes for her for winter in 3-6 months, especially Christmas themed ones.. none fitted her!

fedupandlookingforchange · 04/04/2020 11:40

I had a few newborn which did fit nicely but due to budget mainly had 0-3 months which were absolutely fine.

MichelleOR84 · 04/04/2020 12:01

My little one came 3 weeks early and we only had 0-3 months clothing . They fit bit he was drowning in them so we ordered newborn sizes online which fit him much better the first month .

We could have gotten away with 0-3 though but since we could get newborn clothing we did .

I wouldn’t worry too much though as you never know. My sister had a girl earlier this year and she only fit into 0-3 months for the first month and then went up to 3-6.

Lunafortheloveogod · 04/04/2020 12:05

If you can get separate tops n bottoms or bundlers (they look like nighties) sizing isn’t as big of a deal then. There’s no way to know exactly what size you’ll need.. or even close tbh.

Ds1 was 38weeks n needed tiny baby after being estimated to be big. Ds2 was estimated close to his actual weight n wore “newborn” tightly fitted to get him home from the hospital since I’d packed nothing big at all Grin. He’s in 0-3 or the odd 1month suit that seems a little “leggy”

babynunber3 · 04/04/2020 12:10

Personally I like things to fit not hang off their feet! My baby only went into 0-3 at 3 months old!

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 04/04/2020 15:14

All of mine have worn newborn for about 6 weeks and they were all pretty chunky 8.10, 8.6, 8.12 & 7.6

Caspianberg · 04/04/2020 15:53

I ordered just the 0-3 from m and s, they arrived are are HUGE compared to all the other clothing and actually say from 13lb on label. Ordered some newborn as well afterwards as even for 8-9lb baby they are going to be massive the first few weeks.

allinit2gether · 04/04/2020 16:18

All of my 4 children (ranging between 6.5 and 8.13) were swamped even in newborn at first. I'm 26 weeks and have bought 3 outfits in newborn and intend to get a pack of 5 white sleep suits and pack of 5 white vests. If lockdown is still on I won't be going anywhere and if it's not I'll be able to get to the shops. I've got a 20 minute wash on my machine though.

Otherwise I'm going to buy 0-3 as by 1 month that's what we will be in.

allinit2gether · 04/04/2020 16:19

People will buy 0-3 and 3-6 as presents in my experience too.

Caspianberg · 04/04/2020 17:14

@allinit2gether - at the moment with quarentine, nobody is buying presents, so there will be no gifted baby clothes

reginafelangee · 04/04/2020 17:31

My first baby wore 3-6 month clothing. My second wore tiny baby clothing.

katmarie · 04/04/2020 17:48

Ah yes dd was 8lb 10oz and she was in newborn for about 5 weeks. Then 0-3 until she turned 4.5 months, shes 5.5 months now and only really fitting nicely into 3-6. Shes on 50th centile for weight now, to give you an idea.

allinit2gether · 04/04/2020 19:16

@caspianberg I don't think that will be true, certainly not for people on their first babies. Most shops still have stuff available for delivery and most of the presents I received in the past came in the post anyhow.

allinit2gether · 04/04/2020 19:38

I've got a big family though.

Liande · 04/04/2020 20:50

I recommend getting a mix of both, the cut off for newborn stuff is around 7.5lb/8lb I think and babies obviously arrive weighing either side of that! My DC1 was 7lb3 and fitted in to the newborn stuff nicely for weeks, however DC2 arrived at 8lb4 and very tall and didn’t fit in to any of the newborn stuff I’d packed in my hospital bag! He had to wear the hospital spares until DH could go home to get some 0-3 clothes Grin x

Liande · 04/04/2020 20:51

If I remember correctly he then went in to 3-6m clothes at 8 weeks Hmm!

Sweetooth92 · 04/04/2020 20:52

I’d get newborn. We needed them for a month with my first born at 8lb10 and needed tiny baby for the first 3 weeks for my second who was 7lb15.
Even if only a few bits-and get more if needed. You don’t want them to be cold in loose clothing
