help! sister bleeding 7 weeks won't go to docs

As it says, my sister is 7 weeks and has had some bleeding, she says not huge amounts, red yesterday, brown today, but she won't go and see the doc, says they won't be interested (have told her they will!). Think she's afraid it might be bad news and is postponing the evil moment, IYSWIM. She's been trying to conceive for years (and had given up, polycystic ovary syndrome) so this is a surprise baby.
Help, what can I do?

She really should go to the docs - or better still early pregnancy unit of local hospital - not to sound alarmist, but there is a small possibility that bleeding can be a sign of an ectopic pg, which does need as early treatment as possible to preserve the fallopian tube. Hopefully it is just an implantation bleed or threatened m/c but she is best off having an internal scan to find out just what is going on.

I know . Have called my mum to go round ? sister didn't want to tell her but I thought should over-ride her (when she's worried she's sometimes grateful if you boss her around although you'd never know it). I'm not in same town so can't physically put her in my car and take her to hospital. Her boyf is trying but she won't go...

When I had bleeding at a similar time with DS1, the doctors weren't interested TBH. Just told me to rest and see what happened - it stopped. Same thing happened with DS2 and I didn't bother with the doctor, just waitied and it stopped and I mentioned it to the midwife. I had no pain on either occassion.

Don't panic too much edam. Bleeding in pregnancy is very common and often doesn't mean the worst. I bled a little in both my pregnancies and the doctor ended up telling me not to bother to tell him unless it changed. On a more pessimistic note there is nothing they can do if you are miscarrying at such an early stage. Perhaps your sister is right not to want to see the doctor unless she is in pain or the bleeding becomes heavy. Good luck to your sister and you both.

Thanks. My mum phoned NHS Direct who said, as always, 'see your own doctor in the morning'. Which, while it may be the only advice to be given, just makes her (sister) feel as if no-one cares . Please keep all your fingers crossed, this is a very much wanted and completely unexpected baby ? after 8 years of TTC she had given up completely.

Oh edam, I really hope she's ok. Let us know what happens. I had bleeding with ds, around the time my first period was due, & as you saw a couple of weeks ago, he's fine. I think she could definitely push for an early scan.

my personal experience seems to be different to the other posters - I turned up at GPs, said oh I have a BFP but had what was like a very light period last week, and she took this very seriously, and sent me for a viability scan the next day to rule out m/c or ectopic (and refused to refer me for routine antenatal care until the viability of my pg was confirmed). everything turned out fine in the end (after an ambiguous first scan and some dodgy HCG blood tests results and two more early scans!)

Tell her to lie down,rest, its what would happen if she went to hospital or when she goes to the doctor, it what he'll tell her to do.

i wouldn't say that bed rest was essential - i was just told not to go to the gym/do anything particularly strenuous - not even told to stay off work(!) tho if your sister would feel better for bed rest/relaxing then it can't do any harm!

My dd was also a very wanted baby and i too bleed,around 5 wks...
My doc was great and sent me for a scan 5 days later...
Thankfully they found out y and kept a close eye on me... I didnt seem to bad but my dh knew if i didnt go then i would never forgive myself if i didnt go...

I think she should go to an Early Pregnancy Unit for a scan to rule out an ectopic. I bled/spotted for the first 12/3 weeks of my pregnancy and everything was fine. I did stop going to the EPU once the viability was confirmed though, as a miscarriage is unstoppable - there is no evidence that rest etc help, so thought it was a waste of time.. But all was fine. Bleeding is really common and very often means nothing at all. At this stage, at a decent EPU unit she could get a scan and actually see her 'baby' - a bean with a heartbeat (!) which might be really wonderful for her.

I wouldn't see the GP though. Nothing they can do. A scan is what she wants. The EPU at Kings is GREAT, and you really feel that they care and are interested (or at least, I did). They were extremely unfazed by the bleeding though - they see a lot of it, most of it meaningless.

edam, thinking of your sister. This happened to me 3 times before I got to 12wks. I saw 2 GP's who couldn't care less and then I saw another who booked me in for a scan (8wks) everything was ok and she made sure I had another scan at 12wks, again all ok.
I hope everything is going well for your sister, sometimes bleeding can mean implantation but I'm sure someone has already mentioned this.

Hi Edam,

Hope everything goes well, i had bleeding twice in early pregnancy one at 6.5 weeks and one at 8! Everything was fine both times, although dp and i were worried the staff at the hospital were brilliant and it was nice to see that heartbeat so early on..made it alot more real!..Hope your sister's scan turns out fine, i was told it is extremely common just the womb embedding etc! Fingers crossed...Becs xxxx

IT'S OK!!! They found 'a shrimp with a very fast heart beat', sac is OK, everything fine as far as they can tell!!!!!!!!!
