admit it...did you smoke during pregnancy?

i did
in secret, 5 or 6 a day
haven't had one since the day he was born.
anyone else willing to fess up?

my sister did, she didnt attempt to stop or cut down, she had baby @ 33 weeks and loads of complications.

yes I did through all three. I have since given up and wouldn't dream of smoking around them now and worry continually that I have increased their risk of childhood cancers etc

Yes i did. I dont smoke anymore but when i was pg with DS1 i still smoked about 20 a day. That was back in 1990 when it wasn't that unacceptable to smoke while pg. I deeply regret it now tho and would never even entertain taking my new baby to a smokey environment! I hate seeing pg women smoking now.

I did with DS1 (1 or 2 a day) until I was 4 months pg.

Had 2 the day after I found out I was pg with DS2 and about 10 one day half way through when DH and I had a massive row.

With DS3 tried to stop but couldn't do it although cut down dramatically. Smoked even less since he was born as I hardly ever get 5 minutes to get outside without him in the sling/my arms.

Not proud in the slightest I must add

Something I've wondered and I'm not trolling. Those who smoked did you follow advice on what you shouldn't eat while pregnant?

i did with dd3. the situation was very odd though and i did try to quit.

goingfor3- I didnt change what I eat.. but I dont eat liver, pate soft cheeses anyway.. My diets have stayed the same I am very much a meat and two veg woman.. or lasagna with salad and spag bols I have always eaten eggs with runny yolks etc.

when preg with ds in 1999 I did for about 4 weeks after I found out (wasnt planned preg) Cut down over the 4 weeks and then stopped. Feel very guilty for that, once I found out preg tried to give up and it took me 4 weeks. After ds was born I was very careful about people not smoking round ds and when i started again I only did so outside, that was when ds was a year old. Have since given up 3 years ago and dont think I will smoke ever again. Went cold turkey - no nictonie replacement. Am preg now, was planned pregnancy so made sure folic acid etc was taken.

Gave up with all 3, but started again when each baby was a couple of months old, only smoke outside and have about 3 a day, i get really annoyed that i can stop completly when pregnant but always start again, can't seem to kick it.

I stopped the day i found out i was pg and have hated ciggarettes since for nearly 4 yrs now. I did still eat stilton very very ocassionally though.

with dd smoked until 30 wks when I could no longer face it.
ds obviously hated it as I stopped as soon as i found out was pg, i just didnt fancy one.

i cut right down (to between just a couple of puffs and two whole cigarettes a day(did smoke a lot more)) and found it hard to quit because DP wont quit (although he's now down to 1 a day) right up until i went for my first scan, i had 1/2 when i came out but havent had one since

i suppose it didnt really register that i was pregnant until i say it bouncing around inside when i just thought what the hell am i doing putting my babies health at risk, plus me and DP are both quite short so i thought i had to quit to give our baby the chance to be an ok height!

but i do understand how hard it is to quit, i still get urges and craving where i just want to ask a stranger for a cigarette because i want one so bad, and to be honest i can wait till im quite big because i would be too ashamed to smoke when got a big bay bump

i understand how lucky i am to have been able to quit, because it is so hard, if it wasnt then surely no one would still smoke, i just reall wanted to quit because my mum smoked when i was pregnant and we both got asthma and my little sis contantly got ear infections

i gave up smoking the day i found out i was pg. had my last cigarette before i took the test, but followed all guidelines re food, FA etc.

Yes i did, with my dd i actually stopped for a couple of months but ended up back on them

With ds, i really tried my hardest, got patches off GP etc, couldnt get off them totally though, but i did cut down.

no cut it right out whild preg, but satrted again and then gave up about 8 times. Now I haven't had one since Nov.
[proud self smug emotcion]. I am a non-smoker.

I quit smoking the 1st time I was pregnant 5 years ago, gave myself a few days to prepare and cut down then wet cold turkey. Miscarried 3 weeks later (11 weeks) and still live with the guilt that my smoking probably killed my baby. And yes I know there's no guarnatee that it was the smoking that caused the mc.

Never started again and now have a beautiful DS who's nearly 3 and DS2 on the way. I get really cross when I see all the teenage mums at the hospital smoking and was really shocked to hear that apparently alot of teenage mums take up smoking or smoke more while pregnant so they have a smaller baby that will be easier to birth

I didn't think I was a militant anti-smoker but apparently I am when it comes to pregnancy and children please try and quit, there's loads of help out there and hey, you might even be around to see your own grandchildren then

Hi all

I'm on my second preg now and first time round had last cigarette whist staring at test (in disbelief!!) and couldn't have had a cigarette if I wanted to all the way through pregnancy and 6 months feeding. However, soon after weaning, got drunk, starting smoking again and carried on mostly socially until now. Again, had final one staring at test (I knew this one was coming but I guess I shock easily!!!) and can't touch a cigarette now and know I won't through pregnancy. However, so that I don't fall into the trap again when I'm finished feeding, i'm reading the Allen Carr book for women, which is really good. Loads of friends have given up using it and for anyone that would like a bit of extra help I would read it. And if the thoughts he gives you wear off - read it again!!

pheebe, the first time i got pregnant as soon as i found out i mc at 7 weeks, and always thought i could have been that(also it could have been the stress of XP's family telling me to abort (was 16/17) and worried about mcing again esp as has 2 mc's, but after my scan (12+3) i knew i was past the danger zone so had no probs giving up!
