Doesn't need one, it's a running thread people can add to!

To think some people who've commented on here now have 10 year old children &! I was 17!!!

Sad someone give me my youth back!

Awesome - my kid wasn't even born!

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 10/03/2017 21:52

Or conceived for that matter

Yes both pregnancies. I'm not proud. In fact I was so ashamed I couldn't ask for help. I just smoked secretly and felt like a total bag of shit. I haven't read the thread, I'm not sure I can bring myself to because I know what will be there.

MN fails dismally on the whole to support pegnant women to stop smoking. Because people are too OUTRAGED to even wish them luck.

Around 1 in 10 pregnant women are still smokers at the time of delivery. Stigma is such a big issue that NICE have had to produce specific guidelines for MW and other HCP to help women overcome it and ask for the help they need to quit.

That's why you are all asked to blow in a tube to see if you have CO in your system at your booking appointment. By asking everybody, they are picking up and helping twice as many pregnant smokers as before.

As with any other medical test you have the right to refuse and that's fine. Refuse and then post all over the internet how offensive it was to even be asked to do such a test because of course you would not be so evil as to smoke while pregnant and how very dare they ... you are increasing stigma, making it harder for pregnant smokers to ask for the help they need and doing actual harm.

was really shocked to hear that apparently alot of teenage mums take up smoking or smoke more while pregnant so they have a smaller baby that will be easier to birth

Where did you hear that from? Was it a credible source?

My friend smoked a 10 a day and her dd was born tiny and has recurring chest infections and breathing problems. She has been in and out of hospital since she was born. My friend is so irritated by doctors not fixing her and seeing her daughter being hospitalised so often basically every time she gets an infection, not realising perhaps the smoking had something to do with it. So sad to see.

Deadsouls · 10/03/2017 22:18

No I stopped for both. And managed to stay stopped until about 5 years ago now I'm an on/off smoker. Bloody addiction

Deadsouls · 10/03/2017 22:20

I don't feel outraged by others smoking though. I do know a friend who couldn't manage to stop the last 2/3 a day. I agree that as the stigma is so great woman don't feel they can come forward and ask for help to quit.

That's as long as this threads been going!

Fucking hell, I completely missed that this was a zombie thread! How did a smoking in pregnancy thread only make it to 2 pages in 2007?

The past is a different country ...

I continued to smoke the odd half very occasionally when pregnant with my son 5 years ago, I ended up starting again properly a few days after he was born but cut down loads to 2-3 a day. I kept this up for the last 5 years having 5 a day at the most (always outside and mostly when I was at work etc) I'm currently 24weeks pregnant with #2 and I quit within a few days of getting my positive. I haven't had a single cigarette since and I'm not ashamed to admit I'm finding it really difficult, I crave one every single day and would happily have a cigarette over alcohol etc if given the choice. I'm hoping when baby is born I can still be as strong as I am now and not give in but the real test will be when I've had a drink and am in a social situation.
