Hi all

Wondering if anyone can give me any advise....I’m 6 weeks pregnant and really paranoid about what I can eat. Me and my husband are out for dinner tonight and I really want a burger can I have one?! I’ve read mixed opinions

Thank you x

Yes seriously I basically mentioned to friends that’s what I was going to have and basically they jumped on me and said no you can’t! Hence the reason I asked. Shouldn’t of bothered though as a few people seem very judgemental when it was a simple question

Maybe you have been eating normally, but what is normal. You eat what you like.
By your type, you're a bit precious, aren't you .

Wow that escalated quicklyShock
I was really paranoid about everything in early pregnancy particularly as I'd miscarried before the 12 week mark previously. I found the Ovia app really helpful to quickly look up a food item to see if it was safe.

Gosh - am amazed 3 different people told you not to eat a burger! Why don't people just read the official advice instead of worrying pregnant women, however well-meaning they are? That said, I am surprised you didn't look at the official NHS advice yourself, but maybe you didn't know it existed?

Anyway, next time your friends get and tell you what not to eat, just read the NHS page yourself. It's short, there's hardly anything on there that you can't eat, and if you listen to other people (ie not midwife/nhs advice) it really will be a long 9 months! There's loads of other things you'll probably end up worrying about rather than food!!

In case you couldn't find the page for some reason... here it is. As you can see, byrgers/meat is fine as long as properly cooked through. www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/foods-to-avoid-pregnant/

As long as it's well done (no issue for me as that's how I always have them anyway).
Being this paranoid really won't work very well though

CobaltRose · 28/08/2018 09:08

Yes, you absolutely can as long as it's cooked thoroughly.

I ate rare steak and mouldy cheese before I knew I was pregnant. I've eaten runny eggs throughout my pregnancy. I'm now 12 weeks and baby is fine Smile

NapQueen · 28/08/2018 09:10

I would suggest ignoring advice from these three friends moving forward Grin

Thesearmsofmine · 28/08/2018 09:10

Ahh this post made me smile. You will laugh at this in a couple of years!

@Nettymummy - Prepackaged salads are on the ‘avoid’ list in Australia but it is a ridiculously long list. I remember reading it and trying to calculate what I could eat for the next nine months and coming up blank!

PasstheStarmix · 28/08/2018 09:22

You can even eat runny eggs now as long as have the lion stamp. You couldn’t when I was pregnant and it absolutely killed me not having them for almost a year!

Foggymist · 28/08/2018 09:54

What reason did they give for why you couldn't eat it? They and you need to educate yourself about all this, at least you have the very valid reason of being newly pregnant for not knowing this info, if these people already have children then good god they (or their partners) must have had very dull hungry pregnancies if even burgers were off limits!

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 28/08/2018 10:04

I was only asking because people seem to like to give you advice and I’ve been told by 3 people that you can’t
So ignore them and instead get your information from a trusted source, like PPs have said - NHS guidelines.

Pepper123123 · 28/08/2018 19:45

How strange that three people said you can't eat a burger!
What reason did they give?

Pelly8 · 28/08/2018 23:05

I’ve eaten loads of burgers during my pregnancy! Just ask for it to be well done or cooked through! On another note, my MIL said she ate raw steak every day when she was pregnant with my husband and he turned out to be ok (just about Grin) advice was different/non existent in the 80s though!

MarthaArthur · 28/08/2018 23:12

Ok i think i can clear this one up for you op.

So, burger places like byrons (i think) started serving the burgers pink in the middle. You have to specifically ask for them to be well done all the way through. This is dangerous pregnant or not because the lysteria on the outside is then minced throughout when made into a burger and needs cooking thoroughly.

Im sure thats what they meant. But yes you can eat burgers.

SlimmingMumOf1 · 28/08/2018 23:22

I had burgers all the time when I was carrying my DS. That's was my ultimate favourite! Double decker cheese burger with chips and beans... that's how I ended up gaining 4stone Blush of course it is fine! Just make sure it is thoroughly cooked through.
