Hi all

Wondering if anyone can give me any advise....I’m 6 weeks pregnant and really paranoid about what I can eat. Me and my husband are out for dinner tonight and I really want a burger can I have one?! I’ve read mixed opinions

Thank you x

Yes you can have one as long as it's cooked through like a everything else

30hours · 27/08/2018 16:41

youre going to have a long 9 months

Shmithecat · 27/08/2018 16:42

Apart from liver, I basically ignored the what not to eat list. Rare steak, blue cheese, dippy eggs, shellfish etc all consumed.

TroubledLichen · 27/08/2018 16:44

Of course you can have a burger. Just don’t eat it rare, which you shouldn’t really do with burgers anyway but of course many people do (when not pregnant).

Yep as long as it's well cooked it's fine Smile
Check the NHS list of things you can & can't eat, think thats the most reliable. Some others were ridiculous!

Stephisaur · 27/08/2018 16:45

As long as it’s cooked through.

It’s not on the NHS don’t eat list. Always check that as they update it :) for instance, lion brand eggs are now ok to eat undercooked :)

PasstheStarmix · 27/08/2018 16:46

As others say it’s fine as long as well cooked. There’s really not much you can’t have. See list above sent by pp of what to avoid or limit.

PasstheStarmix · 27/08/2018 16:48

I would recommend cutting into it before biting into it. I say this because when I was pregnant I bit into a undercooked burger ina well known popular restaurant and almost had a coronary worrying about it.

SophieStripe · 27/08/2018 16:49

Yes you can have burgers, as long as the meat is cooked through and not pink. Try not to worry, you really will have a long 9 months! Don't Google, just look at NHS website and their list. There generally isn't actually that much you can't eat so really don't worry and Google every little thing. Meat - Just make sure it's cooked (so no Parma ham etc UNLESS cooked like on a pizza, cheese - make sure it's pasteurised and not mould-ripened like brie, camembert etc. Fish 2/3 portions per week not too much mercury fish eg. swordfish, tuna steak. Seafood as long as it's cooked it's fine so prawns, mussels etc fine just make sure they are cooked. Although many people avoid mussels as it can be easy to get food poisoning from them even if cooked well.

I don’t think your comment was really needed? It was a simple question I’ve been told by 3 different people that I cannot. First pregnancy so will ask questions if I feel I need to. Everyone’s been there

Why wouldn’t you be able to?

Just read the NHS guidelines. There is another similar thread at the moment, people give such bad advice. Just follow the actual medical guidelines that are readily available online or from your midwife.

Cook13 · 27/08/2018 17:11

I was only asking because people seem to like to give you advice and I’ve been told by 3 people that you can’t

Genuinely thought these friends were for advice for people who are unsure not for judgy rude comments

Oh yes you can!!

With my eldest, I couldn't stomach meat at all. With my youngest, all I wanted was meat. Could have happily eaten the stuff raw.

JaneDarcy · 27/08/2018 17:16

Read "Expecting Better" by Emily Oster. Explains the food myths.
Also remember that even if the burger is rare its not inherently detrimental to your health, if just carries a higher chance of giving you food poisoning. As it would if you weren't pregnant.
Ignore all the people who wonder if you're going to/not going to eat this or That while pregnant. They're generally completely ill-informed.

Nothisispatrick · 27/08/2018 17:16

Are those three people who told you that you can’t eat a burger doctors or midwives?

Honestly you’ll have a long old pregnancy if you listen to every bit of nonsense people tell you.

JaneDarcy · 27/08/2018 17:16

Enjoy the burger BTW, I had one last night. Delicious!!

MiddleClassProblem · 27/08/2018 17:20

Just stick to the guidelines. Once you start having regular midwife appointments ask questions there. Sure most people will give you food advice but there’s still some that either don’t know about updates huidelines or are just giving you a plain old wives tale.

KS2706 · 27/08/2018 17:20

Ovia pregnancy app has a "food safety" section. Some ridiculous things in it but was handy for a quick check if I was ever unsure on anything - plus it works without the internet!

MiddleClassProblem · 27/08/2018 17:20

Although don’t feel guilty if you don’t stick to the guidelines! I just meant take advice there more than elsewhere

Seriously? 3 people that told you that you couldn't? Wierd. Shock

Nettymummy · 27/08/2018 17:33

The worst case of food poisening I had was from salad in a restaurant but you never see that on an avoid list.
In fact, the last three times listeria was in the news, that I can remember was when there were recalls on frozen vegetables, before that bean sprouts (for salad) and melons. None of these are considered risky foods.
I've been eating cooked shellfish (lots of it as have been craving it), and blue cheese dip. I've also had an occasion half of lager.

I've been feeling sick in the fruit and veg aisles in supermarkets so maybe my body is purposefully avoiding those things. I have been eating some cooked, but not by me!

My advice is trust your instinct and try to avoid salads, particular in restaurants.

Cook13 · 27/08/2018 17:33

My type? Excuse me? I’ve been eating normally thanks and haven’t cut any ‘food groups’ out I don’t often eat a burger mentioned I fancied one and was met with oh no you can’t eat that. Are people now not allowed to be unsure and ask for advice? I think if you don’t have any helpful advice you shouldn’t comment and be judgemental.
