Nothing showing on 4 week scan?:(

Hi,
I had a mild sharp pain when I stretched last night and so called the midwives and they referred me to an early pregnancy unit this morning. I had an ultrasound and she couldn't see anything so we tried the internal ultrasound (forgot what it's called) and she said she can't see anything that indicates pregnancy but my urine test was definitely positive. They said they're worried about ectopic pregnancy but could be that it's too early to even detect anything on the scan. Does anyone have any similar experiences? I feel so lost and upset I really don't know what to think! The lady who scanned me was really quite horrible and unreassuring but the nurse I saw afterwards did my bloods and she was lovely and said it may be too early to scan and that may be all that is is. I have to go for more bloods on Saturday. Any help appreciated x

Hi lass

I had similar with this pregnancy and 4 weeks is normally too early to tell via ultrasound internal or abdo for pregnancy but if you aren't bleeding and haven't had any more pain then keep rested and hopefully in a couple of weeks a scan will show a bean.

Could you also be earlier than thought - LMP can be indicators but dates can be off.

Hoping all is well.

8pinksnails · 24/05/2018 14:32

Around me they normally don't scan until at least 6 weeks due to not being able to see much before that

minimalpatience · 24/05/2018 14:35

I'm going through something similar at the moment. Because my periods are so irregular I'm not 100% on dates, so I'm either 5 or 6 weeks today. I had a scan yesterday (previous late loss and also due to spotting over past 10 days) and they couldn't see anything. Thy keep talking possible ectopic. I'm waiting on blood test results today and am going crazy. I hope all is well for you.

Kate123cl · 24/05/2018 14:37

@gryffen that's reassured me quite a bit, thank you. It could be earlier than I thought! Start of last period was 24th April and had sex on 7th and 9th so not really sure how it all works. Haven't had any bleeding at all. Thanks x

@8pinksnails that makes sense. I wish I didn't even have the scan as I wouldn't of been worried otherwise x

@minimalpatience it's horrible not knowing isn't itSadit's the wait that makes it 10x worse! I hope your bloods come back ok, keep me updated Smile x

I'm amazed they offered you a scan at four weeks??

totorosumbrella · 24/05/2018 14:47

4 weeks is way too early to see anything on a scan surely. How odd that they sent you for one. Probably jsut cause you to worry more when they can't see anything!

fourpawswhite · 24/05/2018 14:52

Agree with others. Long history of miscarriages and early scans here and they never ever ever scan before six weeks. Even then they are not happy about it and would prefer seven in my locality. Unheard of to be given a scan at four weeks here.

BumpInTheOven · 24/05/2018 14:52

You were lucky they had a look as at 4 weeks, everything is poppy seed size, even most private places won't scan that early as even if they found anything, it's too early to tell if it's a viable pregnancy.. fingers crossed for you though x

ILikeMyChickenFried · 24/05/2018 14:54

It's completely normal to see nothing at 4 weeks. I had a scan at 4+4 and nothing was visible. 2 weeks later I had 2 little heart beating away.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 24/05/2018 14:56

I think she was actually quite unlucky that they sent her for a pointless and worrying scan... As with all the pp, my local area wouldn't consider a scan prior to six weeks and would rather put it off to seven, as it can tell you so little before then. I actually wonder if there was some confusion about how far along you are, as it seems so weird to scan you at four weeks and then to act like it's a problem that they couldn't see anything.

Thank you all so much. I thought it was a little weird to give me one at 4 weeks too. It has definitely caused me to worry which is probably the last thing I need! Thank you all for keeping me sane!Smilex

Hi OP,

My LO didn't show up on a scan until 10 weeks (had a scan at 8 weeks and no heartbeat could be found, but at 10 weeks there she was!) so try not to worry, 4 weeks is very early and I'm sure it'll all be ok, just try not to stress too much xx

Kate123cl · 24/05/2018 15:03

@LisaSimpsonsbff thank you. I know it's her job but I do wonder whether she actually knew what she was doing as she asked me "how far are you" and I said 4 weeks so very early and that's when they did the test because of my sharp pain. If that makes sense? X

OP posts:
Kate123cl · 24/05/2018 15:04

Thank you for that @MotherofKitties that's very reassuring Smile xx

Do you know when you ovulate? If you have a 28 day cycle it would be around the 8th, but could be several days either side.

peachesarenom · 24/05/2018 15:18

They couldn't see anything on mine at 5 weeks, now almost 10, way too soon to see anything I think

Kate123cl · 24/05/2018 15:20

@TittyGolightly I did ovulation tests 7th-10th May and the 7th was the strongest line then decreased until the 10th was no line. So I'm assuming conception was the 10th. Also dtd on the 29th April but guessing that would've been too early lol x

Just an update- I had my blood tests come back at 435 HCG at 4 weeks 2 days. Does this sound normal? Thanks!

OP posts:
BalloonFlowers · 29/05/2018 12:43

HCG levels are really variable. That us totally within the levels expected at 4 weeks. The big part of viable pregnancies is how fast it rises. Are you going back in 48 hrs? You expect it to nearly gave doubled in that time.

Don't expect to see anything on a scan til over 3000.

Kate123cl · 29/05/2018 12:44

@BalloonFlowers thank you so much! I wasn't able to go on Saturday and only just found out the results. I'm going back this evening and then again on Thursday evening Smile

OP posts:
Kate123cl · 29/05/2018 22:40

Levels are now at 3480 and they said that it all sounds perfectly healthy Smile another scan on Friday morning. Thanks everyone! X

LisaSimpsonsbff · 29/05/2018 22:44

Really glad to hear that the levels are increasing normally - a really good sign for this stage. Still cross on your behalf that they gave you a pointless and worrying scan!
