McFlurry and midwives

Had my booking appointment today and was told (along with runny eggs being ok, yay!) that they recommend not eating McDonald's McFlurries, as the pipe aren't cleaned thoroughly enough, and looking on Google, there seems to be others saying it as well, I had no idea!
Ate one last week Blush

Is this general advice being given to everyone now, or was my midwife just very cautious?

dementedpixie · 15/06/2018 13:53

Stop googling then as they are fine!!

aldaniti · 15/06/2018 13:56

This is making me want one! I'm 7 weeks, think I'll get DP to to get one for me tomorrow from the drive through 😊

I had a small amount of a mr whippy, unthinkingly when 32 weeks pregnant. I spent the night on the bathroom floor or on the loo with a bowl. I won’t ever eat one again

I had a craving for Pate, I gave in after my midwife said a one off won't hurt and loved every mouthful.

The don't eat soft serve ice cream advice is global and not limited to McDonald's. It has been around since at least the nineties.

dementedpixie · 15/06/2018 14:11

The NHS advice does not warn against soft serve ice cream. McFlurries are not on the 'do not eat' list

greendale17 · 15/06/2018 14:12

Mcflurry tastes like crap.

Bibijayne · 15/06/2018 14:16

I was told vat based ice cream and milk shakes are a higher risk of listeria. Like salad bars and delicatessens. Essentially, caution is advised but most of the time it's probably okay.

dementedpixie · 15/06/2018 14:17

Ice cream in pregnancy
Soft ice creams should be fine to eat when you're pregnant, as they are processed products made with pasteurised milk and eggs, so any risk of salmonella food poisoning has been eliminated.

(From NHS). It doesn't actually mention listeria

Stephisaur · 15/06/2018 18:56

My midwives have all said mcflurries and mr whippy are fine. McDonald’s milkshakes are also one of the few things that have settled my nausea, so had quite a lot of those 😂

NHS says safe to eat, and the EHO would have something to say if Ice Cream vans and McDonald’s weren’t up to scratch on their food hygiene policies, so I try not to worry too much.

HolyShmoly · 15/06/2018 20:15

In practice I'd go for McDonalds and avoid mr Whippy etc

This is what I did. Often. I figure McDonalds probably get hammered by health inspectors whereas random icecream van might have lower standards.

For most of food stuff I think it's a judgement call on how likely you are to get food poisoning.
