McFlurry and midwives

Had my booking appointment today and was told (along with runny eggs being ok, yay!) that they recommend not eating McDonald's McFlurries, as the pipe aren't cleaned thoroughly enough, and looking on Google, there seems to be others saying it as well, I had no idea!
Ate one last week Blush

Is this general advice being given to everyone now, or was my midwife just very cautious?

Didn't know about the mcflurries and I was told by my midwife that runny eggs are a no no 🙄

Merida83 · 13/09/2017 17:47

Sadly this is advise I was given too at start of this pregnancy. As was a friend who lives hundreds of miles away (So it's not just local advise)

I've been thoroughly miserable as I adore mcflurry and mcds milkshakes but gotta be safe and sensible! So no Mr whippy style ice cream or ice cream milkshakes from machines 😭

Cagliostro · 13/09/2017 17:50

I was told all mr whippy type stuff rather than mcflurry specifically.

I eat funny eggs and was particularly pleased to read that soft cheese is fine if cooked (I love toasted goats cheese)

I reeeeeally miss pate though.

Cagliostro · 13/09/2017 17:51

Ha, RUNNY eggs not funny eggs

SavoyCabbage · 13/09/2017 17:53

I was never ever allowed to have mr whippy style ice cream growing up because of this. and I've never ever had it!

Bangkokbaby · 13/09/2017 17:54

I worked in McDonald's as a teenager. The ice cream machine automatically heats overnight to a temperature that sterilizeds the machine and contents. If the cycle fails then you can't use it the next morning until you manually sort it out.
The machines in ice cream vans don't have the same programme so I wouldn't eat a soft ice cream from there. But I had no worries eating McDonald's ice cream while pregnant.

AtlanticWaves · 13/09/2017 17:55

I was told this too and I'm not in the uk

FoofFighter · 13/09/2017 17:55

I was told the same 4 years ago.

Having worked in a MCds before though I wouldn't hesitate to have one personally, their cleaning procedures are spot on. and BK etc ones too

I wouldn't have one from an ice cream van or corner shop though.

Pennywhistle · 13/09/2017 17:55

I was told this will pregnant ten years ago so it's not new advice.

dementedpixie · 13/09/2017 17:56

Mcflurry is fine as they will clean the machine regularly. Ice cream van Mr Whippy stuff i would avoid as you don't know how thoroughly it is cleaned. Its not on the nhs avoid list either

WineAndTiramisu · 13/09/2017 18:03

She didn't mention other soft ice cream, only McFlurries! Grin

I'd have thought McDonald's are pretty good with their hygiene regulations, although I may be wrong!

Also yay to the cooked cheese, I've had a goats cheese pizza recently that was lovely!

She did specify that only eggs with the kite mark are safe to have runny though.

Oh no I never knew this. Iv had quite a few throughout my pregnancy. I didn't think there would be a problem :o now I'm worried

Lemondrop99 · 13/09/2017 18:15

I've not been told this. My only pregnancy craving has been strawberry McD milkshakes!!! 37 weeks now and not planning on stopping.

I heard the issue with Mr Whippy was something to do with ingredients being unpasteurised (rather than a cleanliness issue)

dementedpixie · 13/09/2017 18:15

You will be fine as there is no information anywhere to say they are unsafe apart from scaremongering by some midwives. I was never told to avoid them but to avoid ones from the ice cream van as you can't be sure of their hygiene practices

Rikalaily · 13/09/2017 18:17

Maccies ice cream is fine, their machines are cleaned daily. Ice cream van, no no, you don't know how often they are cleaned and most of the time it's nowhere near enough!

dementedpixie · 13/09/2017 18:18

There are no unpasteurised ingredients in mcflurries

WineAndTiramisu · 13/09/2017 18:28

dementedpixie I don't think it's due to that, more an issue with the pipes being clean and listeria from what I've read

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 13/09/2017 18:30

lemondrop said it was due to unpasteurised ingredients so I was saying it wasn't

TableMirror · 13/09/2017 18:39

The advise on runny eggs has changed, if they are lion stamped you can have them runny.

EssentialHummus · 13/09/2017 18:42

Me too. In practice I'd go for McDonalds and avoid mr Whippy etc (which is a pain - at 30 weeks we moved in opposite an ice cream van Grin)

Mittens92 · 13/09/2017 18:42

I ate mcflurry every single day (well, most of the days lol) during my pregnancy from second trimester right up until he was born. I craved for them so much and I usually don't like ice cream lol

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 13/09/2017 18:45

As with all the advice surrounding pregnancy you have to assess the risk yourself and decide whether it's worth it. To put it into numbers there were 169 known cases of listeria in 2015 (mosr recent figures). In 2013 there were 1713 road accident fatalities (again latest figures) I imagine everyone still gets into a car when pregnant yet won't eat mcflurries despite the risk being much higher.

Up to you of course but I got sick to death of being told what I can and can't eat during pregnancy.

2014newme · 13/09/2017 18:47

I knew you couldn't have Mr whippy when pg

Unihorn · 13/09/2017 18:56

A colleague who was pregnant the same time as me last year really frowned upon me eating a McFlurry but I had never heard of abstaining from them so j just thought she was being weird. I didn't give much up during pregnancy though to be fair, except for alcohol and rare steaks sob

Expectingbsbunumber2 · 13/09/2017 18:59

Good to know about the runny eggs!
