Newborn or 0-3 months??

Currently 28weeks.
Just been sorting through all of the Clothes that I and other people have bought for baby. Seem to have a lot of 0-3 months and not many newborn things. Do i need to buy a lot of newborn clothes? How long were your babies in them and what was their weight at birth?
Just worried as I dont want to be short on anything.
Also wondering what I should bring baby home in as she will be born September.
Will an outfit and cardigan be OK, with socks, mittens and hat as it will probably not be cold?
Thanks

I wouldn't say a lot of any size clothes is really necessary to buy as you'll likely get presents when baby is born and you don't need a huge number anyway!

My DS was 8lbs 10oz at birth, 53cm long (so certainly not small) and was wearing newborn clothes until he was at least 6 weeks old before then starting wearing 0-3. When I sorted through all the newborn things, there was so much he either hadn't worn at all, or had only worn once!

What you describe as a going home outfit sounds perfect! DS was born in April so similar weather to September and he wore a sleepsuit, cardi, scratch mitts and a hat to come home and was fine!

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy 😊

DS was 10lb and in newborn stuff for about 3 weeks. Most items only got worn once or twice. For going home he just wore a vest and sleepsuit, was late September and he was fine. Could never get mittens to stay on him.

DD was rather smaller - 6lb 8 at birth, and she dropped to 5lb 10. DM ended up buying her tiny baby clothes, which she wore for about 3 weeks.

However our basic set of clothes consisted of 6 vests and 6 sleep suits, a couple of cardigans and hats plus snow suit (it was winter, there was snow on the ground). I would want to have that sort of amount of newborn clothes (which she wore until at least 3 months) as a back up - we got most things for DD second hand, and they are pretty cheap from supermarkets too.

Akire · 29/06/2017 23:02

I'd get a few, people tend to like buying the smallest things as gifts so could end up with a lot. They can always wear bigger sleepsuits with sleeves rolled up if you are stuck!

OrangeJulius · 29/06/2017 23:07

My first was 6lb 4oz, and MIL had to go out and buy tiny baby clothes as newborn was too big. I think it was a good while before she was in 0-3 clothes. Also, dont know what you're planning nappy wise, but once we started using cloth nappies a couple months in, we found we often had to go up a clothes size to accomodate her bum.

Flisspaps · 29/06/2017 23:09

DS was straight into 0-3.

He was 11lb 7oz though.

strawberrypenguin · 29/06/2017 23:14

A few of each until you know what size baby is when they're born, then you can top up what you need. DS1 needed 0-3 straight away. DS2 needed newborn

JellyTeapot · 29/06/2017 23:16

DS was 8lb8 at birth and wore newborn clothes for about a month. DTs were less than 6lb and I had to get tiny baby bits for them - they went into newborn at about six weeks and 0-3 at about three months. When they're very little all you really need is vests, baby grows and a cardigan or two - all very easy to pick up if you find you don't have enough.

moggle · 29/06/2017 23:17

I think most babies spend a while in newborn size. Keep them in the packet for now with receipts and if it looks like baby might be a big un then maybe don't get them out to wash until they're here.
We got lots of clothing as gifts but not much newborn size at all.

Applesandpears23 · 29/06/2017 23:19

My babies were 8 lb 6 and 8lb 10 and in 0-1 month/newborn for about 3 weeks and about 10 days. I would manage with what you have as you can always put them in 0-3 months even if they are a bit big for a day or two whilst someone pops to the shops for some extra newborn clothes if necessary. Most of our newborn clothes were not worn by either baby.

MsPassepartout · 29/06/2017 23:24

IIRC, with DC1, we just got something like 2-3 vests / sleepsuits in each size, with the intention of buying more once we knew how big our actual newborn was.

DC1 was born at 34 weeks so was tiny compared to the average newborn, so we ended up buying smaller baby clothes. And we subsequently got lots of wear out of the newborn sizes.

But then I also know people who had babies over 11lb and went straight into 0-3 month clothes.

mintich · 29/06/2017 23:26

Also Mothercare do up to 1 month which lasts up to 10lbs so if get some of those as 0-3 months are quite big. My baby was 8lb 3 oz and wore up to 1 months. We had some newborn stuff but they were outgrown quite fast

MrsNuckyThompson · 29/06/2017 23:27

I do think it's wise to have at least a few newborn items. Both my average sized babies were in newborn clothes for about 3 weeks or so (although both lost weight after birth due to jaundice - also common!)! You can always keep the tags / receipts and return anything you don't use / save for the next one b

BayLeaves · 29/06/2017 23:29

We only had about 5 newborn sized sleepsuits and my 7lb8oz baby has almost grown out of them now at only 3 weeks of age! I was exactly the same as you OP, worrying we wouldn't have enough. But if you do plenty of washing it should be fine, the shops will still be open when you have your baby, and you will still need to eat food and get food shopping so it's not impractical for your DH to pick up a multipack of sleepsuits in Tesco or wherever if you end up having an exceptionally small or large baby!

bakingmad83 · 30/06/2017 05:47

DS was 7lb 14oz and in newborn just a fortnight, but 0-3 were massive on him straight away, so was glad we'd also got some up to 1 month basics from Tesco and Next.

Userrr141 · 30/06/2017 09:51

Mine was at least 2 months before she fit 0-3 especially george they seem bigger. This time I am buying a good mix of babygrows in each size like 5 of each and if babys big i havent wasted lots of money. If hes small i can go and buy extra new born/up to 1 month

McBaby · 30/06/2017 10:40

3 babies 8lb14, 7lb3oz and 9lb. None of them fitted newborn their legs were to long and some 0-3 were also to short!

Dd3 is 6 weeks and is getting too long for 3-6!

I would not buy too much of any size until the baby arrives. Even then buy as you need as you never know when they will have a growth spurt. Plus depending on their build some clothes for much better.

BertieBotts · 30/06/2017 10:46

I put DS in both straight away but 0-3 was baggy on him. Newborn was more snug and fitted better. He was 3040g about 6lb 11oz.

Cantthinkofaname123 · 30/06/2017 10:51

With DD1 I bought mostly 0-3 months and although she was born 7lb 3.5 oz she was in newborn clothes for a good couple of months before 0-3 fitted so when pregnant with DD2 I bought everything in newborn (and then panicked that she would be born a big baby and everything would be too small). She was born at 37 weeks so only weighed 5lb4oz and all the newborn stuff was massive on her. She had to wear stuff from the neonatal unit until my mum could bring me up some tiny baby stuff. She's only recently gone into newborn stuff when she was about 5/6 weeks and even now at 7 weeks she has plenty of room in the. I think it's good to have a variety of sizes as you never know.

BellyBean · 30/06/2017 10:53

I got up to 1 month stuff from mothercare. A lot of newborn was weighted up to about 8lbs and DD was 9lb when she was born.

snotato · 30/06/2017 11:01

When I had ds,I had a lot of Newborn clothes and a lot of 0-3 clothes for him.he was 7lb 5oz.he grew out of the newborn clothes within a few weeks.
So with my dd I didn't get her any newborn clothes, only 0-3 clothes.but she came out weighing 5lb 4oz,and all the 0-3 clothes were hanging off her.

Acorncat · 30/06/2017 11:04

Mine was 9lb9 and didn't fit newborn at all. She was in 0-1month for a week then into 0-3m. Luckily I hadn't bought any newborn stuff. At 6 weeks she's into 3-6m and she's only 13lbs Confused

badabing36 · 30/06/2017 11:07

I only bought 0-3 month clothes he was 6lb11oz and was swimming in his clothes for around 2 months. I would buy a few newborn clothes.

yikesanotherbooboo · 30/06/2017 11:13

I only had 0-3 months; they were too big for my 6lb 12 oz middle DC but acceptable for 8lb ers and it felt very hard to justify unnecessary expense at the time for the sake of 8 weeks or so.if money is no object 3-5 babygros and the same number of vests would be nice if you have a smaller baby.

Absy · 30/06/2017 11:18

I had some newborn stuff but monster 0-3, and DS was in a mix of the two until about a month / 6 weeks and then into 0-3. However - I did find that the sizing is really inconsistent so don't always look at the size on the label, but on the actual clothes. For eg I find Gal stuff is medium - large, French brands a small, Zara and h and m run around medium. Also - some clothes are labelled differently, so 3 months means UP to 3 months (I made that mistake with a lot of his 3-6 months stuff)
