Under or over bump - maternity wear

Before bump showed I got 3 pairs of trousers that are all over the bump type. At this stage I prefer the 2 non maternity wear that still fit that go under the bump.

I've not reached 16wks yet but have already a sizable bump. Do the over bump clothes offer support to belly as it grows making them more comfy than under type?

what are your preferences?

(warning: little moan) bit fed up that the normal clothes that can fit over my belly are too tight round the bust area, leaving my wardrobe smaller by the day

Under bump all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yuck to over bump clothes.

Hi. I have to say that for comfort over bump trousers are the best, especially the ones with the panel but you have to wear them with a long top as they look absurd with a short top! I bought some cropped under bump jeans from Dorothy Perkins and they are the most uncomfortable things I have ever worn...as they have the elastic that can be taken in or out I will get more wear out of them after the babes born. There is nothing more undignified than hoisting trousers up when you have a big bump being displayed. There is such a lack of nice maternity stuff about don't you think? We don't all want to look like earth mothers in flowing caftans and dungarees do we? Do we?

Last time i remember a stretchy pair of trousers from next and a few little dresses from a sale in C+A. Little dresses-black tights and black boots. (At home loved it out too)

Twinkie · 24/06/2004 15:48

Samcj = Cache Cache clothes are great and seem to fit the best even when you aren;t that big - not cheap but wash well and sooo comfortable!!

Oh and Formes have their sale starting this week I think!!

Angeliz · 24/06/2004 15:48

H+M have some cute stuff at the moment

Bibiboo · 24/06/2004 15:48

Samcj, just wait another 4 weeks and you'll be a huge monster like me! I literally grew a bump over the course of a week on leave from work and enjoyed the astonished gasps when I returned!

MarmaladeSun · 24/06/2004 15:49

Thomcat...lol. I thought I was the only one who liked my bump to be out at home! Can't stand anything over it! Mind you, I started out with a nice butterfly tattoo on the side of my tummy, which has now turned into an albatross! Teehee.

Bibiboo · 24/06/2004 15:50

Also, ahve you tried Ebay for Maternity clothes, I picked up a few paris of trousers that were cheap, and like new as they hadn't had much wear. Admittedly most of them are weekend trousers/ about the house trousers, but I don't want to wear expensive maternity ones to do the gardening anyway!

MarmaladeSun · 24/06/2004 15:51

No offence intended about the dungarees by the way!

Thomcat · 24/06/2004 16:01

Marmaladesun, none taken. If I hadn't looked so cute in them I'd ahve thought the same thing !!!!!!

My mate leant them to me and in December I just found them comfy and generaly easy and thought they looked great!!!!!

Anothe mate sent me a pair of bright pink pj bottoms with a delicate pattern that sat right under my bump and i lived in them at home with a little crop white vest. Uhhh happy days.

I bloody loved that preganancy and having a massive belly to be proud of instead of trying to hold in my spare typre like I have to do these days!

papillon · 24/06/2004 16:22

under bump soft trousers if cool weather with stretchy dressers over the top giving a bit of bump support

Twinkie · 24/06/2004 16:23

DP keeps suggesting that I get lots of dungarees - he has a thing about pregnant woman and I think that is his stereotypical view of a pregnant woman!! - He is a freak!!

papillon · 24/06/2004 16:30

I wore these dressers which are stereotypical at all

not the partywear mind!!

Thomcat · 24/06/2004 16:34

Twinkie, all the blokes I knew at the time, inc my D had a thing about pregant women too and I had trouble keeping them off me!! D loved me in the denim dungarees! He loved me out of them too, but we won't go there!!!!

Hmmmmm, quite fancy being pregnant again!!!!!

I love my iondre the bump jeans although now I'm bigger I don have to keep hauling them up. They don't dig in tho as the bit across the bottom of the bump is a stretchy panel. Problem is that becasue they're so low most tops, even maternity ones, only just meet them and I'm not into displaying my belly in public.
At home is another matter .
I have over the bump ones too and as long as they're quite soft they work but I find some of the seams and fastenings get quite itchy. Also you do get a funny line under tighter tops.
I don't find that over the bump stuff gives any particular support though - just covering.

BTW Twinkie, you definitely look pregnant. Very nice bump coming along there.

sponge · 24/06/2004 17:23

Don't know what happened to that "under".

Lupe · 24/06/2004 18:03

all the things that fit me best are non-maternity, stretchy lycra (but soft, not too tight!), loose drawstring trousers that you can wear under or on bump. Lots of layers helps, tunic-y things, pj-type bottoms. I've got a bit ethnic-y and wear lots of bright colours, flip flops, jewellery etc.

Generally though, under bump tho I had one pair of overbump when it was colder and they were okay for work so no flesh showing but still think they're ugly. And the maternity underbump stuff I've had has either fallen down or been so bloody tight I can't bend down, sit or do anything in!

In my opinion, maternity tops are good cos it's really difficult to get things to fit over your boobs and tum (and even if you're a tum out person you don't necessarily want your top up under your tits after 5 mins ). But maternity bottoms seem to be uniformly dreadful, badly fitting or just plain UGLY!!!!

Bronze · 26/06/2004 13:45

over the bump or under the bump i'll be lucky if i find ither to fit and i'm only tall not excessively so.
(any tips )

I have a really large bump so over bump trousers are most comfortable for me, although they really don't look very good unless I wear tops that cover the bump completely. Under bump trousers are often just too tight or uncomfortable, though I think they look nicer and can be useful during the first few months of pregnancy or after the birth!
