Under or over bump - maternity wear

Before bump showed I got 3 pairs of trousers that are all over the bump type. At this stage I prefer the 2 non maternity wear that still fit that go under the bump.

I've not reached 16wks yet but have already a sizable bump. Do the over bump clothes offer support to belly as it grows making them more comfy than under type?

what are your preferences?

(warning: little moan) bit fed up that the normal clothes that can fit over my belly are too tight round the bust area, leaving my wardrobe smaller by the day

I have ended up with a lot of over the bump stuff, which feels nice for belly but can look a tad messy under some of the tops I have.

The thing I find with a lot of mat. trousers is that they start to bag out from the knee upwards so I look much bigger than I am IYKWIM!!

Bibiboo · 24/06/2004 11:51

Personally I'm siding with the over-bump stuff as I can't bear the feel of jeans/waistbands or underwear rubbing the underside of my bump. But on the other hand, I hate those over bump things with the big jersey panel and elasticated bit at the top, equally uncomfortable, so I'm going with stretchy pants all made from same material but that have bigger fronts. Oh and HUGE maternity undercrackers!

Twinkie · 24/06/2004 11:51

I have both and wear them all I think as much as the other - mind you I have a pair of under the bump jeans from next which must sit on my bladder casue I can't wear them without peeing myself when I sneeze!!

Think under bump is easier when it is hot though as I get hot and sweaty and bump itches and over bump nice for days like today when DS needs snuggling in his little womb room against the nasty wind!!

oliveoil · 24/06/2004 11:56

over is far better, under dig in when you sit down.

webmum · 24/06/2004 11:58

I also found that under tend to slip down, I tried apair of under the bump jeans and wore them at home for a few hours and every 2 minutes I had to take them up again, it was so annoying! !
Thankfully I'd kept the receipt and brought them back.

Over the bump def. When I got really big with ours I did find that 'over the bump' ended up being 'under the boobs' and the whole area became one and by the end of the day it was a big sweaty mess. I did prefer under the bump pants though with both of ours!!!...

carwillin · 24/06/2004 12:18

Have to agree, under the bump little knickers and over the bump trousers - preferably without the elasticated panel as it does get really hot and sweaty.

I'm now 38 weeks and I'm down to one pair of trousers as all the others are either too hot for this time of year or too small - I've had a relatively small bump until the last couple of weeks where it seems to have ballooned! I refuse to buy anymore

poppyseed · 24/06/2004 12:21

Same here I looked a trollop in the end....refused to buy any more maternity anything! I cut all mine up after DD and DS, lost the weight and had a nice post-natal treat in Next!!£££££

Angeliz · 24/06/2004 12:24

OOH, cant wait to have a bump. Twinkie you sound totally loved up already

sweetkitty · 24/06/2004 12:25

I've got both too, got my Next over the bump trousers on today and they are still falling down (34 weeks). I like my under the bump jeans though. Over the bump sometimes look wierd with tops as they cut your bump in two making it look like fat.

codswallop · 24/06/2004 12:26

under ones fall down

poppyseed · 24/06/2004 12:28

M&S thong (!!!ooher) ones don't

Twinkie · 24/06/2004 12:28

I feel it - all warm and cosy about being pregnant (well without sister problems) and really like having a bump (get cross when certain mumsnetters say I don't look pregnant!! ) and am sooo chuffed when I can feel him kicking his little legs around - ooooooo I am sooooo soppy!!

Kayleigh · 24/06/2004 12:54

ooohhh Twinkie. What a lovely round bump. How pregnant you look....

Twinkie · 24/06/2004 12:57

Thanks you lovely glam woman (if no one has met Kayleigh she is lovely - tall with long red hair and the most wonderful dorian green/tanya turner nails that are always perfect and really cool handbags)

I would say over bump overall. I have things that are under and things that are over but i find now i am so big that the over bump trousers support my tummy better.
If i spend a day wearing under the bump jeans my bump becomes very achey and i feel like i should be lifting it up to support it

Saying that, wearing under bump joggers today and they are soooooooo comfy

oliveoil · 24/06/2004 13:43

Nothing is as comfy as my dh's 6 year old Paul Smith trackie bottoms aaahhhhhhhhhhhh. Shame I can't wear them to work.

My pants keep falling down today, they are linen and s-t-r-e-t-c-h throughout the day so I am flashing by the time I go home.

Samcj · 24/06/2004 15:31

Can anyone help me too?(probably a but late for that!) For suggestions when you are simply too fat (!!) for normal wardrobe but maternity trousers just don't stay up? Yesterday I was walking across Westminster Bridge with black maternity trousers on and an white thong, despite how many times I picked them back up I knew I resembled a larger Jodie Marsh and might as well walked over there in my knickers and not bothered with the trousers. Today I wore my old jeans, caught sight of myself in the window on the tube and reaslied my bump was being cut in half by my jeans!! And yes they were very uncomfortable! Miserable having no clothes to wear.

beansprout · 24/06/2004 15:38

Yuck Samcj - how many weeks are you? I take it you are at the changing but not yet a definite bump stage. I just had to wear a couple of pairs of trousers that had always been a bit big. Charity shops or cheap shops are good for trousers a size bigger that you won't be wearing for too long? Apparently they come in handy on the journey back down again afterwards!!

Bibiboo · 24/06/2004 15:41

Samcj, try getting some cheap trousers for the next few weeks from the supermarket or somewhere. They may not last all that ong, but as Bean said, will be useful after baby until you're back told shape.

Thomcat · 24/06/2004 15:41

Out in public it was over as felt more secure and protected. Went to H&M and got soft trs, jeans etc, didn't wear those ones that look normal unil you see the belly bit and they've replaced material there with thick wad of stretch brown ribbed material!!!!!!!!

At home - belly out, out out! Wore D's combats etc. Then when it got really cold (she was born Dec) I wore my denim dungarees a lot at home.i loved having it out at home, wouod rub oil in and have a hand superglued to it!!!!!

I had something like a 42 inch tummy measured at home with a tape measure from belly button and round again.

Samcj · 24/06/2004 15:42

I'm 18 and 2. Do have a bit of a bump but not enough to hold up my trousers!!!
