Excuses to leave work for scan

UnicornPee · 18/08/2016 09:22

Please help with an excuse of why I will need to leave work for 2 hours for my scan.
(Yes I know it's ridiculous I will need an excuse but I work with a lot of women who may guess and I won't be telling anyone until I am 16 weeks)
It's going to be a busy day at work that's so that's why a good excuse is needed.
Thanks in advance!! xx

Just say hospital appointment. You aren't lying and they will probably suspect but you aren't under any obligation to confirm until you want to.

sashh · 18/08/2016 10:02

I've had a number of ultrasound scans - never been pregnant.

Maybe it is an ovarian cyst? Or possible gall stones.

I'd go with cyst, covers you even if you are seen in the department.

Dixiechick17 · 18/08/2016 12:02

Need to take a relative for a consultant/physio appointment.

If you wear glasses you could say you've got a hospital appointment in the eye department as optician has referred you.

Willberry · 18/08/2016 12:15

My boss told me she had to leave early for the hairdressers. She rarely leaves on time and never early so that got me suss. Appointment, Dentist, Doctors would have raised less suspicion. Still waiting to see if suspicions are confirmed!

DesignedForLife · 18/08/2016 13:00

X-Ray of your back or knees or something

LondonGirl83 · 18/08/2016 13:10

I agree with those saying hospital or medical appointment. You can say, I've got a routine medical appointment and I don't know how long it will take. Then just change the subject. I find it horribly rude when people ask if you are pregnant.

Have your suspicions of course but if someone hasn't told you its because they don't want you to know obviously! To put a woman on the spot about something so private and potentially complicated to me is really insensitive.

toffeeboffin · 18/08/2016 13:16

Can you call in sick and take the whole day?

toffeeboffin · 18/08/2016 13:16

Or fake an emergency, like your boiler has burst or something, and you have to dash out?

toffeeboffin · 18/08/2016 13:16

Or you have to take someone to the airport?

Diddlydokey · 18/08/2016 13:19

The washing machine has flooded the kitchen floor. You'll be in ASAP but need to sort a plumber.

suspiciousofgoldfish · 18/08/2016 13:21

I like fenellas suggestion of having witnessed a crime and have to have a police interview!

Please use that one. It will snowball out of control and you'll have to remember all the elaborate details, it will be hilarious for us to hear about afterwards.

coolpotato · 18/08/2016 13:24

what about a problem with boiler/heating/water and emergency tradesman can meet you at your house to take a look?

broken tooth/toothache would be my preferred option though - toothache is painful so you would really need to see a dentist asap to get it seen to.

user1471422849 · 18/08/2016 13:53

Just say you have an appointment to the majority of people. Tell your boss it's medical. That is all you have to say. The worst that is going to happen is they ask you if you're pregnant or they talk behind your back.

Popskipiekin · 18/08/2016 13:57

Tradesman is good - you could always set it up the day before complaining about a leak in your home etc.
You could also postpone the appointment to a day that isn't going to be so frantic and take AL then?

NameChange30 · 18/08/2016 14:00

Congratulations on your pregnancy! When is your scan? I have my 12 week scan tomorrow Smile

I always say "I have a medical appointment" at work. It's both truthful and vague. (It could be anything - GP, hospital, physio, etc.) I haven't had anyone ask for any more information, I think most people are professional enough to realise that it's personal and if you wanted to give more details you would! But if someone does ask, you can just say something like "oh it's nothing serious but I'd prefer not to talk about it"

NameChange30 · 18/08/2016 14:01

Oh and don't do what a PP suggested and take annual leave. We are entitled to paid time off for antenatal appointments. It would be a waste of annual leave!

MilkyMamma · 18/08/2016 16:00

Just say it's a hospital appointment regarding lady problems and look embarrassed, no one will dare ask anymore!

Also not untrue, as it is a lady problem, but not a bad problem.

Congratulations Flowers

twinmamma2b · 18/08/2016 17:16

I did the 'lady problems' one - said it was an investigation into my periods.

GinIsIn · 18/08/2016 19:14

suspicious - and that's exactly why I didn't use it - I'm a terrible liar! Grin

raviolidreaming · 18/08/2016 19:35

I always think periods owe us the providing occasional cover story!

NapQueen · 18/08/2016 19:38

"Was at the docs the other day as I've been getting headaches and they want me to pop up to the hospital"

Even better if you ring the day before the scan. "Been to docs today and they are sending me up tomorrow"

Saku · 18/08/2016 23:58

say Physio for terrible terrible back pain... which you can back .. when you announce pregnancy... as back pain is common in pregnancy

MilkyChops · 19/08/2016 05:41

You had some abnormal results so need an investigation.

S0dabread · 19/08/2016 06:08

Congratulations !
How about a blood test at the hospital ? My hospital has the take a ticket and wait system so you could be number 2/3 or you could be no 30 in the queue - very hard to say how long it would take.

Packergator · 19/08/2016 06:09

Tbh I just told my boss. She was the first (apart from DH) person I told. I figured that at least then, if the worst did happen and I needed to take more time off, she would be aware and sympathetic. Also, made booking subsequent time off for appts, etc. a lot more straightforward! I trusted her to keep it private. You can just give any one of the excuses listed above to your colleagues, if you don't want them to know. Congratulations!
