spd roll call, advice and support

thought it might be a good idea to get one thread going for the spd sufferers to chat, give/get advice and just moan about how it is quite liderally a PITA!

i will start - fembrace SUCKS!!!

otoh, ice packing the si joint and pubis at night before going to sleep is very soothing.

anyone else?

luckily, its been nearly 3 years since I was last pregnant but I can still remember the pain. If I can give one piece of advice, if you have it badly and then think you are recovering NEVER kick a football! I did this about a year after the birth of my last child when my pubis was just about starting to feel normal (and it was only a light little ball!) and I thought I was going to die of the pain. It set me back around a year or so and I still have to be careful.

DS2 is nearly 7 months now and I'm still suffering pain, particularly if I've been pushing a buggy for a while or been chasing after ds1 who is 2.5 years.

Pain is worse at night, still have to have a pillow stuffed between my knees some nights. Also have to watch how I sit generally - my pelvis seems to "crunch" and "crack" if I sit wonky.

Tried to go down the slide in the back garden last week in a moment of madeness - nightmare! Won't do that again in a hurry.....

Keep meaning to go to the doctors for a referral for osteopathy etc but never seem to get round to it. On the too difficult pile at the moment.

where are you, mumbojumbo? i can let you have various names in london for osteo/physio if that would help?

sleeping surrounded by a complicated construction made of pillows! aaargh! it is more comfortable but doesn't last the night of course.

Serenequeen and anyone else suffering with SPD at the mo - you have ALL my sympathies. I don't think I've been right since really, although its NOTHING like it was.

Serenequeen - did you post a while ago about an obstetric physio or something? If so did you find someone?

poor you mumbojumbo. If it's any consolation, physio/osteopathy didn't do much for me - so don't feel too bad for not organising it yet! I know it helps some people alot but I think that in others, its just a question of how long it takes for the joint to settle back 'together' (time's a great healer and all that...). But that pain in bed...ooh just awful. Poor you. One tip I did use, was never moving my legs separately in bed - so to think of them being joined at the knee IYSWIM.

I'm in Berkshire.

Do you find you have good days and bad days - depending on what you've done the day before? I did quite a bit of walking with the double buggy and am paying for it this morning! I'm very careful regarding keeping my knees together now and had so many pillows propping me up during the latter stages of my last pregnancy, there was no room for dp!

Excellent Thread!
My spd last year with dd2, was complicated by a twisted pelvis. The pain made 13 hrs of labour on gas & Air seem pain free! (well virtually) and she was 9.5 lbs.
This year, expecting ds1, it was the spd returning after the birth that indicated I may be pregnant.
Now 26weeks, a few hundred pounds invested in my osteopath, and I'm feeling okay.
Still have pillow between knees, don't push supermkt trollies and (unfortunately) avoid walks with buggy- which I miss.
Still got 3mths to go so ..........
This thread will be great for tips and hope!

Mine only mild in that it is mostly bearable I find it's OK in the morning but gets worse as the day goes on. Worst time is when I forget and turn over in bed ouch!

Hi I'm 37 weeks pregnant and have been suffering with this since quite early on. My doctor and midwife have told me that it's just 'one of those things', which seems to be the standard answer for any discomfort in pregnancy Then last week my lovely friends bought me a session with a reflexologist, and I expected just a lovely foot massage, but I came away feeling so much better. At first I thought the woman was just a crazy hippy But I swear since that session the pain has been minimal, I feel so much stronger and she even seems to have sorted out the old pelvic floor, as not a drop even when I sneeze anymore
I wish I understood this better, but I have just accepted that it worked and don't spend too much time wondering how. I think if you can find a good reflexologist it's worth a shot, as, if nothing else, it feels divine!

Yikes, have I got this? I'm 21 weeks and every now and then (to go with the back pain in my sacrum) I get a radiating, shooting pain up my groin as I move around.

It's very intermittent, might it get worse? Go away? Huge sympathies to everyone who has it. As a frequent sufferer of back problems I know that godawful feeling of doing something (spontaneous, fun) and then thinking 'oh,oh. Back in the soup'.

Hello all - not sure if I have this - have pains in pelvis - especially in sort of low back/high on buttock on one side rather than the other - can't get up from couch or from bed without having to drag my leg along like a one legged person - thought maybe sciatica at first but the pain is different and worse when have been sitting or standing for any period of time and especially after ironing (I'm playing on this one too!!) - did tell the midwife but she just told me it was completely normal (even when I said I had none of this before with DD!) and I should take paracetamol!!

Please tell me it isn;t this SPD and I will get better soon rather than worse!!

Sympathies all round peeps ...
I had SPD with DS and it went away as soon as he was born. I got it much worse when pregnant with DD ... was incapacitated from 24 weeks really. I thought it would go away after the birth like last time but alas, no. 4 months post natal and I ache after walking a lot and I definitely agree with foxinsocks re. kicking football. Last weekend I thought I would join in with DS and DH playing in the garden. After 10 minutes I had to hobble inside holding my bits together and biting my lip ....

One more question though, with apologies to anyone for whom this is not a possibility
Should I be avoiding walking/any gentle exercise? Or is it a good idea to keep walking - without a buggy?

Twinkie - I dislocated my sacro-ileac joint (hip from back) at 33 weeks with dd. I too had to hobble around and drag my leg but the pain wasn't excrutiating hence the reason it wasn't diagnosed for a couple of weeks (physio at maternity hosp). She assessed me and after checking I was over 35 weeks literally "tugged" my leg back. Bliss!!! Honestly it didn't hurt. I have since dislocated it again when ds was about 9 months old but without my lovely preg hormones making me bendy & stretchy that was agony and so was having it pulled back into place.

I am on my third pregnancy (19 weeks).
First time round had SPD from 25 weeks, second time round from 14 weeks. This time I can feel the twinges but am minding myself (no crossing of legs, knees together turning in bed and getting out of car etc).

I did not find physio helped much, this time I am trying an osteopath who puts it down to my sacroiliac joints and hips being locked (therefore the only joint with any give is the pubis). I will see how that goes.

On a positive note, what helped last time round, rather than those supersexy braces and belts, is a length of tubi-grip (similar to those that support injured ankles and wrists), folded and worn below bump, day and night. It was good support without too much bulk. I have asked the physio at the hospital to send me some as I cannot find it from last time - may be worth bearing in mind?

Tootsicals, if it's not too bad I reckon walking is OK. But if anything pulls it, stop.

Saw the osteo today who gave me a good poke in the bikini line area and pronounced that part of me not to be crumbling too badly.

My goodness jampot - hope its not that!!

Its not all of the time - if I have been sitting for a long time is worse or when I get up in the morning or during the night to take DD to the loo - is not sciatic nerve like last time though is sort of at the top of my buttock - does that sound stupid - more like inside my buttock but irhgt ta the top near my back (oh help me!!)

If it is it does it go or is this it until I have this baby??
