finding ot sex, anyone had it put in an envelope?

Before people start with surely a healthy baby is what's important! YES of course a healthy baby is most important to me so comments like that are not needed here

I have my 20 week scan in a few weeks (it will actually be 21 weeks) and DH and I would love to find out babys sex from a gender reveal cake (this is our 1st and we're making a fuss with everything).
Just wondering if anyone has done this. Will the sonographer be happy to write sex down and put it into an envelope for us? And information would be gratefully received

Are you in the UK? I could be totally wrong and happy to be corrected but I think this is possibly an American type of thing? But like I said I could be wrong. However why not just ask the sonographer? I'm sure they'd be happy to do it for you after they've gone all the important measuring etc. Just don't look st the screen as me & DH could tell straight away what we were having. It was VERY obvious so just bear that in mind!!

It's all very exciting. Hope they agree to writing it down for you and you get to have your gender reveal cake & hope all is well at the scan.

I thought a gender reveal cake was to sunrise friends and family rather than the parents? How does this work? Do you take your envelope to a baker and they make you a cake?

Yes! I think it is a very American thing just love the thought of finding out with all our family there! Yes we will ask hope they agree to do it!

Fascinated by how the cake finds out the gender before you do, or does the sonographer whip out the pink or blue butter icing behind the scanner?

The ones I can find online are all based on the parents telling the baker what the gender is, so I'm still fuzzy on the logistics of your way.

There's a private scan place near me that does this sort of thing, have the scan and then pick up the cake several hours later (they outsource the cake baking, there not some strange scan/baking shop) so the parents and family's can have a surprise so I can't see why the nhs sonographer would have an issue with writing it in an envelope!

I'm 100% certain even if it is a UK based hospital the sonographer will have been asked to do something like this before. I find American culture influenced stuff like this so cringeworthy, shame it's becoming more and more common

In the U.S. It's reasonably common. Sometimes the couples know and the cake is their reveal to family and friends. But sometimes they just pass the envelope to the cake maker who delivers a plain white iced cake. Couple cut into it in front of F&Fs and the sponge is either pink or blue. You get balloons in a box to open too.

I saw one once for a couple having twins after 12yrs trying and 3 rounds of IVF. 2 tiers. First one was blue and she has to compose herself before the second one which was pink.

It's not just about cakes though.
Sonographers are often asked to write the sex down as one partner would like to know and the other not.

I'm sure you can ask the sonographer to write the sex and put in an envelope and they won't mind.
I was very meh about sex reveal parties until I realised us and all our friends here did our own versions in one way or another. Ours involved happy hour and drinking, no cake but intention was the same!!

Yes I have! Yes they wrote it down no problem (though they will say it's not 100% accurate) and we sealed it straight in an envelope and gave to the cake maker.

Had all our close ones there when we cut the cake. I loved finding out that way, we have my reaction on camera it was really special. Lots of memories made that day.

We didn't do a gender reveal cake but we had the sonographer write down the sex and put it in an envelope so we could find out on our own at home later.

Mslg what is wrong with "American based" culture? Shitloads of cringey British culture I can think of.

I'm sure they will have been asked before but do be aware that it's not 100% Dd3 turned out to be DS1 at birth which was a shock after 4 big scans and I know someone who was told DS4 at 20 weeks scan which showed (correctly) DD1 at a 3D scan a few weeks later.

Maybe It's just not for me, I find it a bit OTT. Is that so terrible? And I agree, probably loads of British cringey stuff too. I'm not British so wouldn't know. All I know is that baby showers etc are a recent thing influenced by the US.

Just to warn, the sonographer may not agree to this. Ours wouldn't - something about writing it down and the risk of being wrong... Imagine they are paranoid about being sued and the bit of paper being used as 'evidence'.

You might have to supply your own envelope. I don't remember seeing any in the room with the scan.

My sister did this, but not because she wanted a cake/public reveal (though I don't think anything wrong with you doing one!). Instead she took the envelope to a shop where she had chosen an outfit for each sex (costing the same!). She gave the envelope to the cashier and went for a coffee while they wrapped up the correct outfit. She and her DH then took home the wrapped bag and opened it together in private. I think she just wanted to find out alone with her DH so they could enjoy it together. Long winded but a nice idea.

We did this with ds3. Our scan was the week of Christmas. We asked the sonographer to write the sex on the back of one of the scan photos. She didn't seem to find it an odd request. We went out for dinner on New Year's Eve and we opened the envelope as the New Year came in. It was a lovely way to find out.

I think it is a lovely idea OP. My friend did similar with a photographer. The photographer put pink or blue balloons in a big box and the parents opened it and then the photographer captured the reactions. Such a lovely idea and why not make it special. Good luck let us know how you get on xxx

My 20 week scan was early Dec so we got the sonographer to write it down and opened the envelope on Christmas morning together. It was a nice present. We didn't do a big reveal or anything though.

We asked ours to write it in a card for us. She caveated it with the normal "this isn't 100% accurate", but we didn't do anything with it. We just wanted the choice to find out at home if we chose to.

This time we are going to ask again, but go out for lunch to open the envelope.

I asked at 20 week nhs scan and they said they weren't allowed to do it. I'm guessing privet places would though.
