Anyone else told by MW that the ruling is now no alcohol in pregnancy?

At my booking in appointment my MW told me the guidelines on alcohol in pregnancy had changed (although still to be updated) and that no alcohol at all should be consumed. Didn't drink at all last time so not a huge concern but wondered if anyone else was told this ?

Did anyone else see that "Pissed & Pregnant" programme on TV last night? Has this changed anyone's mind?

I did watch it. It didn't really tell me anything new, apart from the number of units in an average glass of wine (THREE!) which was a bit of a shock.

I think I read somewhere recently that 1 unit = 100ml of wine, which is less than the smallest glass served in a pub (which i think is 125ml). I've barely drunk at all - I had nothing during the first trimester apart from before I knew I was pregnant, and even then I think it was just a couple of beers on England World Cup match days. I felt a bit grotty from weeks 7-10 so wouldn't have fancied it anyway, and had decided not to drink at all for the first trimester.

Since then I've probably had less than half a glass of wine on average once every three weeks. Watching that programme last night, though, I can't help wondering whether I shouldn't have had anything at all. The problem is that there's just no way of telling if there's a 'safe' amount of alcohol and if so, what it is, since alcohol affects everyone differently. We all know people who are under the table after one glass while others can down a bottle of wine without even getting tiddly.

I haven't had anything to drink for several weeks now but was looking forward to a glass on Christmas Day. Now I just think I'll feel too guilty and am seriously considering total abstinence for the rest of my pregnancy.

The programme reckoned that one unit was 80mls of win. Yikes.

lazyemma · 13/12/2006 11:08

win = wine, obviously!

CurrantBun · 13/12/2006 11:11

I know, it's barely a sip really!

Hey all!
Just stumbles upon your conversation and in fact its something i've been thinking about recently. I'm currently 22 week spregnant and haven't touched alcohol since i conceived, but i am TOTALLY having a glass of wine saturday night for my works xmas do! I haven't been out to the pub since i was pregnant as i feel like a right pleb with all my mates drinking and me not. and so i am finally looking 4ward to going out...obviously i'm not going out to get drunk, but i figure one glass of wine is fine. It doesn't make me a bad mum to be! I steered clear of ALL harmful things during the most critical period and am now jus trying to enjoy xmas whilst pregnant. so anyone whose having a drink now and then, please don't feel bad, just be careful and drink sensibly! x
