Early scans - how soon to see more than gestational sac?

To all those of you who, for whatever reason, have heard very early scans. At what stage do you reckon its reasonable to see more than a sac?

I had a scan at 5+4 at the beginning of the week, and my consultant seems very relaxed that all they can see is a gestational sac, no embryo or heartbeat.

any other experiences?

When I had early scan with DS my GP specifically scheduled it in for 6+2 because she said that earlier than that you might or might not see anything other than a sac without its being particularly significant.

julezboo · 13/10/2006 14:38

Ive often had scans this early and just the gest sac has been seen, its amazing how fast they all grow really, with this pg i had a scan at 6+0 and it was all in there despite a heavy bleed

NastyNemo666 · 13/10/2006 14:40

It is usually past 6 wks to see hearbeat and supposedly definetly by 8wks.

geordiemacminx · 13/10/2006 14:40

Think but not sure that 6 weeks is a possibly, 7 weeks is more or less a certaintity? Of course it depends on how acurate your dates are?

fluffyslippers · 13/10/2006 16:08

I had an early scan at around 5 weeks and all they saw was the sac, a week later, we could see the yolk sac and heartbeat which was a big relief.

TheUnholyTrinity · 13/10/2006 16:10

I had a scan at 5+2 weeks and they could just see the sac and had no qualms about not being able to see the heartbeat
Hpwever because I had thought I was further on than that they brought me back exactly one week later to check and lo and behold at just 6+2 there was the heartbeat

tutu100 · 13/10/2006 16:19

had scans from 5 weeks but the heartbeat was not visible till 8 weeks.

lulumama · 13/10/2006 16:21

7 weeks with both of mine to see a heartbeat.....

jojo76 · 13/10/2006 16:26

Hi, I had early scans with both of mine. With both, I had one at less than six weeks, where i could see just a sac and nothing more. We had a scan with ds1 at 8+3 and saw heartbeat, and for this one we saw heart beat at eight weeks.
Good luck, im sure everything will be fine at your next scan. xxx

SCARErenity · 13/10/2006 16:30

I had early scans with both DSs due to bleeding, and the earliest we saw heartbeat (and got a picyutre of a kidney bean to take home!) was 6/6,5 weeks. BF had similar and had sac only at 6 weeks, she didn't have a h/beat until 7 weeks.

vvvvvvv · 14/10/2006 14:39

i had a scan and was told that there was no heartbeat and just a sac and that i need to go bk in two weeks, well when i went bk there was the heartbeat and the baby and they told me that i was seven weeks so the first time i went i was only 5 weeks and that was too eary to show up.i really wouldnt worry its prob that the scan was done too early good luck.xxxits six or seven weeks for anythink to show up and that was a early scan not a on top scan it was inturnal

alexh · 15/10/2006 11:02

Thanks so much every one - last time I had some bleeding at 8 weeks and had a scan and all was well so I just think this is all a bit unsettling. Plus I am feeling nothing like as ill with this one - in fact I feel fine. Very few symptoms

Hi again! Just to say, I know how you feel, i had bleeding with both pregnancies, infact with this one it went on for five weeks! It is a huge worry. For what its worth, I felt a lot less sick with this pregnancy than with the first, just try to think of it like every pregnancy is different, this one has been totally different to my first. Good luck with everything, im sending oyu lots of positive thoughts!

mears · 15/10/2006 21:50

I dislike early scans for this very reason - they do not provide reassurance as they often leave more questions than answers.

cosmicjock · 12/10/2007 22:22

Hi so glad to have found this site with all your messages on they are really touching.Im 9wks from my last peirod date and have had two very slight bleeds once after having sex. Been for a scan tues just gone and everything is there except a heartbeat. The baby is only 7wks by its size, so im going back nxt Weds for another scan as docs say im just on borderline and it may show up nxt week. Still have had no pain or loss, been told that if anything on Weds then its a bonus.Im all over place after reading your messages as Ive just been waiting for the loss or pain or even to just not see it still on Weds. Really feel for those of you who have waited longer than I will be for your scans, its only been few days and its driving us mad, feel rotten too as im short tempered with my two yr old angel. Be gratefull for any advice or help xxx

slim22 · 13/10/2007 10:59

we saw gestational sac at 6+2 and Dr was non-plussed.
Then heartbeat at 8 weeks.

BetsyBoop · 13/10/2007 21:48

this is a great site for early scan info

MellyD · 16/01/2008 21:40

Hi,
I have been worring myself sick as i went for a 5+6 scan yesterday the sac was there but no baby yet. I know i ovulate on day 19 & my sac was 10mm. Do i have a need to worry?

The first website i found was full of horror stories about going back 2 weeks later, still no baby & then the dreaded happens.
I cant stop thinking the worse.
Has anyone seen a baby within a sac this size?

BabyEllsBells · 16/01/2008 22:01

same sort of worries with me here after reading your comments. i had a m/mc oct 07 and i was 6w4d but no heartbeat so had a d&c sac was 8mm was this wrong??. now preg again will be 7 weeks friday. if they tell me no heartbeat should i wait another week? very confused desparate not to happen again.

lollyheart · 18/01/2008 19:10

Hi babyellsbells i would wait another week till you are 100% sure. i had a scan at 5 weeks just saw sac im so worried ive had 3 miscarriages before my hcg levels are high and rising the doc said he should of seen more my next scan is on monday i hope they can find the baby. i also have a tilted uterus that makes it harder to see things. i do have 2 children 3 and 15months.

BabyEllsBells · 19/01/2008 15:48

BabyEllsBells · 21/01/2008 17:06

lollyheart im so pleased for you!!!! well done! so you must be due around the same time as me sep??

lollyheart · 23/01/2008 10:43

Hi babyellsbells yep im due 10th sept.

minkersmum · 23/01/2008 23:57

Hi i also went for a scan recently and all they could see was the sac. I had a bfp two weeks before this and was quite sure i was a good 6 weeks, yet sac was 12 mm which made me only just 5 weeks. Same thing happened when i had my son!! Reckon its another boy and maybe they just take longer to drift down and implant!! Going for a repeat scan in 10 days, fingers crossed all is well and we can see a heartbeat! Had a m/c in sep so desperate for this one to hang on in there, also had spotting the first few days after my bfp this time but did with son too, so just have to hope all fine, feeling sick tho so pleased about that!!? Good luck to all!!
I'm also due around second week in sep!!
