Early scans - how soon to see more than gestational sac?

To all those of you who, for whatever reason, have heard very early scans. At what stage do you reckon its reasonable to see more than a sac?

I had a scan at 5+4 at the beginning of the week, and my consultant seems very relaxed that all they can see is a gestational sac, no embryo or heartbeat.

any other experiences?

After 8 weeks.
before, you might just give yourself a fright as you may be wrong with your dates. At such an early stage, a few days make a big difference.

It is nice to find a group of ladies going through a similar experience.

I miscarried last June and after 6 long months of ttc we finally got the good news However, that said, it has been one worry after another. Every cramp, every twinge is cause for worry. I am trying to remain positive and stressfree, however, easier said than done.

I was sent for a "dating" ultraound today only to see an empty gestational sac. I am positive of my dates as we were using an ovulation predictor and I know when we had sex and when we didn't. I should be 5 weeks 6 days today. I have read so many contradicting posts and articles on the net (I think that perhas the internet is my worst enemy these days. Some say this could be normal others say that there should, at the very least, be a yolk sac visible. The thing is, the u/s technician spent all of 5 minutes doing this u/s and dind't do a transvaginal. I even asked and she said no you don't need one?! Now I am left to worry and am unable to see my Dr until Tuesday of next week. I fear I may go crazy between now and then with worry.

I know that none of you can give me a definitive answer, however, did anyone else experience an empty ges sac at 5 weeks 6 days? If so when did you do a second u/s and what were the results.

monko, saw an empty sac at 6+4 then 2 weeks later: heartbeat.

hi i went for dating scan yesterday 24/1/08 thought i was 6weeks+2 but the sonog said there was only a gestational sac and was measuring the size of 5 week and 1 day sac.she said they was no fetal pole or no yolk sac yet as to early?? i am a bit worried as i had a scan once b4 at 6+6 and it was all there, but i have also had a m/c at 12+6 days as all was left inside me was the babys sac. can i be sure that the fetal pole and yolk will appear?? i am schelduled to go bk on the 7th feb 08 so i will b buy there dates 7+1 but 8+2 by mine ??

the same thing happend to me went for a tranvaginal scan due to some pain i thought i was 6 weeks 1 day by my dates but they just saw a empty sac no yolk sac measuring 5 weeks i was sure of my dates to, they said not to worry as its all to early to see anything well apart from 1 doctor who flicked thro my notes and said its not good as my hcg levels were at 12000 and said more should of seen. i went back 10 days later and all was there yolk sac baby and heartbeat so there is hope uless you have had bleeding or bad pain try not to worry.

hi, i went for a TVS 2 days ago. I was exactly 8 weeks pregnant that day. the result, there was a gestational sac that was 6-7weeks age but no embryo nor yolk sac was visible... i was advised to go back for a follow up after two weeks.... the result worries me a lot because last year i had D&C for my first pregnancy... is there still hope that there would be fetal growth?
really need to know... two weeks is quite too long for me to think & guess if everything will be ok..

Hello i recently found out im pregnant i have my first doc appointment August 5th but I've been seeing a carenet nurse she did a regular urine test it came out positive and due to my last period she estimated i was 8 weeks i went in yesterday and i only had a 17mm sac no baby no yolk she determined i was 5/6 weeks pregnant. She just did an ultrasound she did not perform a vaginalscan. Should i be worried about a miscarriage? Is this something that can usually happen without any risk?
