How many scans have you had?

I'm 32 weeks and enjoying a pretty easy problem-free pregnancy so I've only had the 12 and 20 wk scans and my regular midwife appointments so far.
But I feel sometimes that I'm alone in having so few scans. A couple of friends had babies last year and went to hospital a few times for scans when they were worried about babies movements and a guy at work today whose wife is due the same time seemed shocked that I hadn't had a scan since 20 wks.
Even yesterday I was at the mw and I asked the student she had with her what position my baby was in and she asked what the last scan showed and I said, well it was the 20 wk one so I guess transverse but it was a while ago and she seemed surprised I didn't know.
I'm sure I'm worrying unnecessarily but wondering if on the days baby is moving less (it kind of varies but generally he is active) I should be hot-footing it straight to hospital for a scan?

Where I live (in Canada) if everything is normal from the start you only get one scan at 20 weeks and that's it..
I had with my first at 6 weeks because I had irregular period. So they wanted to check how far I'm. Then one at 11 weeks because I was dehydrated and they wanted to check baby. One at 20 weeks and that was it. Until I gave birth.. Smile

With this one know I had one at 11 weeks as based on my doctor my uterus measured further along but based on the baby I wasn't. And now at 20 weeks.. So far I will not have any more scans if everything goes ok. Except she was breech at 20 week so if she doesn't turn after 30 weeks then they schedule one..

33+6 and I've had 5. an early private 8 week to confirm pregnancy before flying home at Xmas to share the news w family, 12 week, private 16 week gender (couldn't wait, and had chromosomal scare at 12 week so wanted to have someone tell me all looked good), 20 week and 32 week growth scan.

Hazchem · 19/06/2014 03:36

None.

I'm in Australia and the birth centre requires a scan at 20 weeks so I'll have that then although I'd prefer to keep it at none.

For both previous pregnancies I lived in the M.E so they scanned at every appointment! I think I had in the region of 14-16 scans each pregnancy and so many photos I didn't know what to do with them all!

I'm in cyrpus and my check ups have been like the Japanese one except for measuring tummy and edema.

Hazchem · 19/06/2014 06:22

You have checks without ultrasound. The evidence suggest at a population level that routine ultrasounds don't change outcomes. What does is proper care either midwife or OBs which can then request ultrasounds as diagnotic tools.

In the UK, first time mums get appointments at the following weeks- 8-12 for booking, 16, 25, 28, 31, 34, 36, 38, 40, 41.

Subsequent pregnancies get appointments at booking, 16, 28, 34, 36, 38, 41.

Scans at 12 and 20 weeks are standard.

Generally they take your blood pressure, dip your urine, screen for problems like headaches/swollen ankles, listen to the heartbeat, feel the baby's position. (They do not routinely weigh you.) So similar I think, though not as many appointments.

weebairn · 19/06/2014 07:14

Appointments are all with midwives for low risk pregnancies, and a mix of midwives and consultants depending on your condition for other pregnancies.

LJHH · 19/06/2014 07:23

I've had 2 NHS ones (12 & 20 weeks)
Plus a private gender scan at 17 weeks and another 4d scan at 27 weeks.
Would love love love another but can't afford another private one :(
Only 9 weeks til I get to see the real thing though I suppose Grin

Needadvice5 · 19/06/2014 07:25

12 weeks and 20 weeks with all my dc.

Eminybob · 19/06/2014 07:28

You want as few as possible as they only do more than 12 and 20 weeks if there is a potential problem!

I had an extra at 32 weeks due to a low lying placenta discovered at 20 weeks. It's moved, but now they think baby is too big so want to scan again at 36 weeks!

Believe me, I'd rather that I'd only had to have the 2!

Alita7 · 19/06/2014 07:40

Oh totally forgot about my other Nhs one when we had spotting in the beginning, so 3 :)

20 week scan today :D

eurochick · 19/06/2014 07:49

I wish I only had the two standard ones. They send my anxiety levels sky high!

So far I have had:
6 weeks (standard at my ivf clinic to check location and heartbeat)
7 and 8 weeks at epu due to bleeding
10 weeks viability scan before Harmony test
12 weeks
20 weeks
28 weeks to check whether placenta issue picked up at 20 weeks had resolved (it hadn't)
30 weeks because 28 week scan picked up growth problem
Will be scanned weekly from now on until they decide baby is better off out than in.

squizita · 19/06/2014 08:47

Be thankful for only needing 2! :)

I had:
3 before I was pregnant (for RMC and to check a suspected partial molar was all gone).
1 week 6
1 week 8
1 week 9
1 week 10
1 week 12
1 week 16
1 week 20
...and have another on Monday (week 28).

All of them a right faff and pretty scary to boot, just reminds me there's something wrong.
If your baby is moving and you feel normal, all good! :)

mrsnec · 19/06/2014 08:53

I'm wondering now if my 26 week one is standing practice or not they didn't tell me what it's for they just told me that's when they wanted to see me again.

theborrower · 19/06/2014 08:54

OP, it depends on medical issues I guess. With my first baby I had the dating scan at 13 weeks and the anomaly scan at 20. No issues and a healthy pregnancy so that was it.

But she was low birthweight (5lb 4oz). So this time I've had -
12 weeks dating scan
20 weeks anomaly scan
27 weeks - was worried about reduced movements, had a trace but baby was moving too much! A scan confirmed everything was ok.
30 weeks - growth scan
34 weeks - growth scan
36 weeks - growth scan
Will also have one on arrival at hospital in labour to check position (my request) because DD was undiagnosed breech and was born by EMCS.

Minesril · 19/06/2014 09:23

I had the usual two, but in the past few weeks (I'm 38 weeks tomorrow) my BP has been borderline high so the doctor briefly did a scan to check the baby. Funny story - when he pulled the machine over I got the fuzzy 'yay I'm going to see my baby!' feeling while my husband started hyperventilating - 'why does he need to do a scan what's happening!'

I think his BP may be higher than mine right now.

Miriama · 19/06/2014 09:40

I've had three, one at 12 weeks, one at 20 weeks, another at 24 weeks (couldn't see the heart chambers) and I'm going for a private 3d scan today - well we went on Saturday initially (Fathers day present for DH) but she wasn't playing, and so they have given us a freebie session today, hopefully she will not be so shy! Agree with other posters though, less scans are better - less to worry about!

MummytoMog · 19/06/2014 09:45

NHS scans at 12 and 22 weeks, and a private scan at 8 weeks (I was in denial about being pregnant and needed to see it to believe) and a private gender scan at 16 weeks. I might book a private growth scan later on, as I'm worrying about the size of this baby. But otherwise, in previous pregnancies I've never had a scan past the anomaly scan and don't feel the lack of it.

slithytove · 19/06/2014 09:46

With DD1 I had 3 - 12 week, 20 week and presentation.

I now have around 7/8 per pregnancy.

1/2 epu early scans
12 and 20 week scans
4 weekly growth scans from 28 weeks (28, 32, 36, 40)

WhizzPopBang · 19/06/2014 09:46

Had loads because of a health condition, but there wasn't a planned one between 12 and 20 weeks, so I had a private gender scan, mainly because I wanted the reassurance (and found out it was a girl so we were over the moon!) - but even those 8 weeks felt like an eternity!

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 19/06/2014 09:49

With DC1, I had
6 weeks (early bleeding)
12 weeks
21 weeks
(private 3D scan at 28 weeks)
34(?) weeks (growth scan as measuring big)

DC2
12 weeks
21 weeks
(private 3D scan at 28 weeks)
34(?) weeks (growth scan as measuring big and DC1 had been big)

DC3
12 weeks
21 weeks
(private 3D scan at 30 weeks)
34 weeks (growth scan even though not measuring big as DC1 had been big and DC2 hadn't been small)
38(?) weeks (just with mobile u/s machine at regular appointment to check position as mw couldn't tell which end was which through palpation)

Loveallmyboys · 19/06/2014 17:28

6 in epu, 3 in antenatal, another one next week and whenever they feel it necessary to check in on bubs. I'd give my right arm to just have the 2 scans! That means all is as it should be.
Enjoy and don't worry about not having to worry! You're very lucky :) x
