They told me the gender at my 12 week scan...

So I went to my first scan today (12+2). It was incredible. Anyway, at the end, I asked when i could find out the sex of the baby. He asked me if i wanted to know now, I was like, Erm, YES! He said he was pretty convinced it was a girl. He couldn't say 100% but if he had to give a figure, would say 70%! Now, obviously that doesn't mean i am having a girl for sure but it seems pretty crazy that he was willing to tell me at all! he said he would be very shocked if he was wrong.

Anyone else get told at their first scan? I am going to wait until my 20 week scan to start buying dresses but I'm pretty excited about my (potential) little girl! (i'm at the UCLH hospital in London btw)

My friend was told at her 12 week scan that he was 80% sure it was a boy. At the 20 week scan she was told it was a girl. It was a girl. I don't think it is v accurate at 12 weeks!

tumbletumble · 28/05/2014 20:04

I don't know anyone told wrongly at 20 weeks btw.

thereinmadnesslies · 28/05/2014 20:05

I had this - the consultant said it was a girl, that he never got it wrong, that he wouldn't tell me unless he was sure. At the 20wk scan the sonographer insisted it was a boy. Cue lots of confusion and upset, because I'd set my heart on a girl. DS is gorgeous and I wouldn't change him for anything, but I really wish the consultant hadn't messed with my head :-(

BikeRunSki · 28/05/2014 20:07

I was told wrongly at 20 week scan.

Flickstar · 28/05/2014 20:10

My childminder was told it was 80% a girl at 12weeks. 20 week scan said boy...

MrsLilac · 28/05/2014 20:10

hmmm, very interesting. I was thinking it was a bit irresponsible of him for telling me really. I will keep an open mind and just wait for the next scan i guess!

I know a girl who was told wrong at her 20 weeks. She thought she was having a boy. That baby is named Lucy now and looks lovely in a frock Wink

GingerRodgers · 28/05/2014 20:33

I saw the babies nub at the 12 week scan, convinced myself I knew what it was and had it confirmed at a private scan and again at the 20 week scan.
Not due for a while yet but if all of that is wrong I'll shave my head I'm that convinced it's right!

LemonBreeland · 28/05/2014 20:45

It sounds a bot irresponsible of him to tell you, when it seems clear they can't really tell at thst stage. Fwiw I know two people who were told wrongly at the 20 wk scan.

MissSmiley · 28/05/2014 20:58

I had private nuchal scan at 11.5w and they told me two boys. It's to do with the angle of spine to pelvis and nothing to do with girl or boy bits. They were right.

Iseecows · 28/05/2014 21:02

I had a scan at 11.5 and was told I was having a boy. DS came along 6 months later.

LittlePeasMummy1 · 28/05/2014 21:05

My '12 wk' scan was just before 14/40. I was already convinced she was a girl, and the sonographer said she thought so too. It was confirmed when my obstetrician friend scanned me at 19/40. Tbh, I was already so convinced by 12w I think I'd have struggled to get my head around a boy.

ImBrian · 28/05/2014 21:46

I had a scan last week at 13+1 and she told us it looked like a boy. Showed us the bits and it did look like boys bits. My boyfriend would love a little boy and now really has his hopes up. The nub looks fairly boyish as well but we're going for a scan at 16 weeks for c

ImBrian · 28/05/2014 21:46

Confirmation

MummytoMog · 28/05/2014 22:18

I was pretty sure this one was a girl at twelve week scan and so was the sonographer. Sixteen week gender scan and twenty week scan both confirmed, so if this is a boy after all that, I will be majorly pissed off!

squizita · 28/05/2014 22:44

I think the nub isn't even that developed at 12. I wouldn't go buying pink or blue based on a 12 week scan! Grin

Dizzywhore · 29/05/2014 07:36

A good friend was told at 12 week scan she was having another boy. Then at her 20 week scan it turns out she's was having a girl.

RAFWife12 · 29/05/2014 09:06

Another one who knows people told wrong gender at 20 week scan! Part of the reason we decided not to find out. Nothing is certain till they are in your arms!

ImBrian · 29/05/2014 09:26

I know someone who was told girl at 20 weeks and then had a boy.

forago · 29/05/2014 09:34

I was told at 12 week scan with all of mine (one was actually 11 week scan - 10 years ago) - told all 3 were boys (with the usual disclaimer that it was early and they weren't guaranteeing it etc). They were still boys at the 20 week scans. And they all cam eout boys.

I think the machines are pretty high resolution now at the London teaching hospitals and I think that is how they are able to say earlier (I was at St Thomas' and Kings) - many people disagree with me that it is possible but they seem to be at regional hospitals where the machines maybe aren't as sensitive yet?

Certainly the lady at St Thomas' 10 years ago said "I won't put it on paper and this is unofficial but in my professional opinion, that's a boy"

At Kings they said "That's a boy if ever I saw one" and "I am pretty sure that's a boy"

No guarantees but I think sonographers are pretty good at recognizing the right nubs and lumps etc even early now that become male or female.

Not long til the 20 week scan to find out for sure!

squizita · 29/05/2014 09:50

Forago I was seen on a v v high resolution screen at St Marys (Imperial). They were still extremely negative about telling - I guess if sometimes it works, sometimes not, they'd rather not! Not worth the hassle.

DownstairsMixUp · 29/05/2014 09:54

I wouldn't personally listen as early as that. That seems to be where you hear the most stories of them getting it wrong! I've been told I'm having a DS at 16 weeks and 20 and still scared a little girl will pop out! Of course I'll be happy to but obviously really hyped myself up for a boy now!

forago · 29/05/2014 09:57

yes different hospitals have different policies obviously. I know some of the N London hospitals have a policy of not telling gender due to the local ethnic makeup. Also, some people will get trainee sonographers on the day who will not be as experienced or confident I guess.

But it is definitely technically possible.

My friend recently had a private gender scan at 16 weeks. So they must be reasonably confident by then.

EvilTwins · 29/05/2014 09:57

I was told at 12 weeks that I was having ID twins. At 16 week they said it was two girls. That was nearly 8 years ago and they were right.

talulahbelle · 29/05/2014 09:58

Nub theory told me girl at 12 weeks. Baby's position was no good at 20weeks but the monographer said possibly a girl, and we were confirmed a girl at a private 25 week 3d scan.
If she comes out a boy she's going to be sleeping in a lilac bedroom, and has an awful lot of pink clothes.

Saying that, we have a boys name agreed on, it's a girls name we can't decide.
