They told me the gender at my 12 week scan...

So I went to my first scan today (12+2). It was incredible. Anyway, at the end, I asked when i could find out the sex of the baby. He asked me if i wanted to know now, I was like, Erm, YES! He said he was pretty convinced it was a girl. He couldn't say 100% but if he had to give a figure, would say 70%! Now, obviously that doesn't mean i am having a girl for sure but it seems pretty crazy that he was willing to tell me at all! he said he would be very shocked if he was wrong.

Anyone else get told at their first scan? I am going to wait until my 20 week scan to start buying dresses but I'm pretty excited about my (potential) little girl! (i'm at the UCLH hospital in London btw)

For ago sorry misunderstanding: St Marys tell. Just not before 16 weeks.

I am seen by the consultants who train other consultants and the senior sonographers.

They are adamant that there is too much room for error and nubs vary wildly depending on the baby, so won't tell before 16 weeks. A couple of days at 12 weeks make a big difference.

no misunderstanding. St Mary's policy is not to tell until 16w. Kings are happy to tell at 12w (in most cases - though it is obviously case dependent) - I used to work there. Obviously, it gets more accurate/obvious towards 16 weeks. The Op asked if anyone else got told at the first scan. They do. And it will often be right. It will be more often right at 16 weeks.

I remember asking the sonographer/obstetrician at my 12 w scan on my first and he said that even if the fetus was born/passed at 12 weeks (sorry if that upsets anyone) that it would almost be impossible to see the gender at that point of the pregnancy.

this study is interesting onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/uog.2674/full

indicates that identifying males at 12-14w is slightly more accurate than identifying females - which seems to support what people have mentioned anecdotally. I have heard of girls coming out as boys but not many the other way round I don't think?

OP if the 20 week scan also says girl I think you should be pretty safe to buy some dresses!

Ive had private gender scans at 16 weeks with 3 of mine, they wont do it before that though because I theres a chance of getting it wrong. All three times I coukd see for myself what it was

Emmahobbs86 · 29/05/2014 18:23

hi i had my son in germany when my husband was in the army we wer told aat 12weeks we wer having a boy and they wer right altho the scan was a 3d scan and alot more clear then a normal scan. good luck x

MeeWhoo · 29/05/2014 18:29

I was told at 12 weeks that the baby looked like a girl, but they said it was too early to be certain, so we kept an open mind and didnt tell anyone the sex until the 20 wk scan, which confirmed she was a girl.
I do indeed have a 3 mo dd currently asleep on top of me.

Catflap1 · 30/05/2014 02:25

At my 12 week scan I was chatting to the sonograher who said they can't tell that early, she also went on to tell me how a lady who was in earlier that day had a private scan at 16 weeks and was told it was a girl, but when she scanned it was in fact a boy!

Redglitter · 30/05/2014 02:34

I saw a FB post only today of someone's newborn baby boy.
Every reply to the photo commented on the fact they'd been told it was a girl

Lanabelle · 30/05/2014 02:36

I was told at 13+4 and it was correct. TBH you couldn't really miss it, He was legs akimbo for all to see

slightlyinsane · 30/05/2014 10:38

My I'd twins were boys at 17 wks by 19 they were girls. It took a further 3 scans to convince me they were girls.

Thanks for all the responses. I think I will remain cautious and just wait and see. I don't mind either way, it would be nice to buy my first outfit though, think I will just stick to so etching white although I think a lot of the gender neutral clothing is pretty uninspiring!
