Early pregnancy scan no heartbeat

Hi, I've seen many things on here and google but always seem to get different answers.

Found out I am pregnant with baby number 3 just over a week ago while on the pill! Sent for an early scan 2 days ago.. First guy said I'm sorry there is the sac but there's no baby, he went to get a second opinion and the next man stared at the screen and pointed to a tiny grey "dash" and said there's the baby but it has no heartbeat.
They measured it which came out at 6.85ml they didn't tell me how many weeks I am they just kept saying how sorry they were over and over they seemed so sure that the pregnancy is over!
I have no idea how many weeks I'm supposed to be due to being on the pill. Had anyone ever had a scan like this where the staff seem so sure it's all over then go back a week later and all is ok??
I'm due back in 5 days as they said a second scan is "protocol"

Any advice much appreciated
Thanks x

Didn't want to leave you unanswered though not sure I can add much. The second scan protocol is to ensure there isn't a viable pregnancy. I had one when I had a missed miscarriage as I bled a little at 6 weeks and had a scan afterwards and discovered it was a mmc.

Hopefully someone else has a more positive update.

It could simply be that you are too early to see a heartbeat, especially as you don't know when you conceived.
The follow up scan is to see if baby is growing.
Keeping fingers crossed for you!

miracle0812 · 27/05/2014 11:16

Thank you I can see the replies Grin

I would have had hope if they were a bit hopeful but they seemed certain that it's all over, from looking at scan I think about 5-6 weeks as had early scan with my eldest at 7 weeks and looked similar but smaller.
Googling measurements etc should be around 6 weeks did a clear blue conception indicator yesterday which said 5+ weeks xx

I am going through exactly the same thing. Ill send you a link to my post...I wouldnt worry just yet (says me! Shock)
Next time you go, ask them everything you want to know, I.E how big is the gestational sac as this normally gives you an idea of how 'pregnant' you are, also you could ask them if its workth you taking progesterone and if they feel it would help. They told me to go back this week but I am not going to go and I am just going for my 12 week scan later on, it will avoid me any further worry in the meantime as I don't feel I would make any kind of decision myself before the 12 week scan anyway.

RAFWife12 · 27/05/2014 11:22

The Clearblue conception indicators aren't always accurate!
5-6 weeks would be too early to see heartbeat. 6 weeks plus you should be able to see it, so hopefully you will be able to see heartbeat at your next scan.
Try to keep a little bit of hope.

Alice1983 · 27/05/2014 11:23

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/2088093-Help-Please - here is my thread. They weren't very hopeful with mine. At the end of the day, is nature, there is nothing you can do to change it, apart from a little progesterone and relaxation, p&r Grin and looking after yourself. My doctor said to relax as the stress its worst, I do hope it works out for you, and for me xx

miracle0812 · 27/05/2014 13:57

Thank you.. I will ask more next time they seemed to want to get me out quickly they were pretty awful they said the next scan was just protocol they had no hope didn't say anything like we will see if we can find a heartbeat next time he even said you can't call this a pregnancy anymore Confused
Don't know what to think and really can't help thinking it really is all over!
Thank you Alice I hope it works out for you too!! How far are you?
Xxx

If the 6.85mm was the CRL measurement you should be somewhere between 6-7 weeks I think, which is when you should start to see a heartbeat. I don't really know why they seemed so sure that the pregnancy wasn't viable though, sometimes it can take a little longer to see a hb...

I've had the opposite experience, I saw a heartbeat but knew the measurements were way too small for my dates but no one would believe me that something was wrong, until a follow up scan showed a mmc. I think sometimes doctors, midwives etc just make up their minds and then don't really consider the alternatives.

I know how horrible the waiting and not knowing is, fx your next scan will show a positive outcome. However, if you can I would probably prepare for the worst but hope for the best. Good luck!

Alice1983 · 27/05/2014 21:38

My CRL is 4.8mm so I think I am way earlier than they think or its just not growing, who knows. I personally think they just dont know, and it sounds bad if they say they dont know, so instead of using those words, they say, 'it doesnt look like'..etc. instead of being positive to avoid anyone going back and saying...but you said....thats why they rush you out, they dont want the confrontation at that early stage and also dont want to say nothing positive and then have to backtrack and they also dont want to say they really dont know either, this is just my view. My doctor got a bit stressed out with me and said, look, I really do not know...its nature and there is nothing we can do about it, but he said that after a massive grilling and questions from me, so I think he gave in for that reason, but if I wouldnt have asked loads of questions and had been so hysterical, he probably wouldnt have said that.
I think I am 5 weeks..., keep me updated Cake xx

Alice1983 · 27/05/2014 21:41

Yes prepare for the worst or hope for the best is the best advice I have been given - as mentioned by Metalhead Thanks

VJONES1985 · 27/05/2014 21:42

There was no heartbeat at my first scan at 5 weeks but I went back at 7 weeks and there it was. I may just have been too early. Good luck.

Just wanted to send you a hug. It must be hard being in limbo and not knowing if you will have a miracle baby at the end or not...

I had an early scan between 6-7 weeks and no heartbeat could have been seen. Well that had turned out that I have now a wonderful happy 8 month old boy who is sound asleep in his cot bed.. Grin
