9wks pregnant with brown discharge, scared

I'm 9.5 weeks pregnant and am really worried, I've had brown discharge the last couple of days when I wipe going to the loo, and can feel the mildest of cramps in my lower abdomen. I saw my midwife for the first time today and she didn't give much reassurance, I'm paranoid every time I go to the toilet. My scan is still 2.5 weeks away and between this and a stressful job I'm terrified of miscarriage. Has anyone else experienced this, I'm so scared.

Firstly, don't panic. Brown blood normally means old blood, which is better than fresh blood.

I got a "what to do it you have any bleeding" leaflet at my booking in appointment. Did you get something similar? Did you get the number for your early pregnancy unit? They should be able to advise.

I had brown blood at 7 weeks and 10 weeks - baby was fine on both occasions. I know how stressful and worrying it is but try and stay positive. I saw my GP about my bleed at 7 weeks and he booked me into the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU) for a scan the very next day. When I started bleeding at 10 weeks I rang the Assessment Unit directly for advice and they booked me in for another scan. Two and a half weeks is a long time to wait when you're anxious and scared. Could you speak to the EPAU at your local hospital for advice? Most places let you self refer and will do scans purely based on what you tell them over the phone.

Heather, I am in the same boat as you. I rang midwife and I am booked for appointment at the EPU for a scan tomorrow. I was told to go to A and E if the bleeding gets heavy and if the blood is bright red. Please tell your midwife or GP you are very distressed and would like a referral to EPU xx

Heatherlou I was totally hysterical when this happened to me (Monday, 2am). Please, please, remember this is very common and it could be many things, not necessarily M/C.
My friend who is a nurse says if you are distressed go to a and e or ask for referral to EPU, not fair that you should have to wait so long. xxx

Check your local hospital policy, at mine you can self refer to the EPU?

Thanks everyone, to add to my woes, I have a condition which means I can't have an internal scan, so my only option is to wait for the abdominal one. My midwife said to go A&E if I was in pain or was bleeding heavily, but in the interim, I just have to try not to worry! Argh!

OP - I am now 11 weeks and had this about 10-14 days ago. It was exactly the same symptoms you describe and stopped after 3 days. Nothing has happened since but I still have a week to wait until my scan.

I thought about booking a private scan but held off and just tried to relax. But if it were to become red or the cramps hurt more, then I would definitely contact someone about it.

Sorry, don't know if that helps, but just wanted to say I was going through the same thing and I feel a lot calmer now.

At 9.5 weeks an abdominal scan would be fine.

Heather they should be able to do a normal scan at 9.5 weeks.

When this happened to me I turned up in a&e and they sent me over to EPU. Heart beat was present and all seemed well...unfortunately 12 hours later I had a red blood bleed and it wasn't good news for me.

I really wouldn't be happy to wait over 2 weeks....hope all is well xx

This happened to my sister and everything was fine. It was old blood and it carried on spotting for a week or two. No fresh blood. Baby was carried normally to term.

I am 10+3 but they are doing an internal scan for me tomorrow, think it is to see better but they can do abdominal or at least listen for heartbeat I think yeah?
heather I went hysterical went it happened and spent the next 24 hours sobbing uncontrollably. I am calmer today because the spotting has stopped. Please try to keep positive. I had cramping and dark blood BUT my friend described her miscarriage at 10 weeks to me and from what she said the size of the blood discharge was not tiny (more huge, huge clot) and the pains were very strong... xxx

soon to be six yup, same here at Newcastle RVI they let you self refer to EPU based on what you tell them on the phone. Heather I would google it and try to self refer xxx

Thanks everyone, I hope I'm freaking out unnecessarily, but nobody tells you about this side of pregnancy! I want to be happy but feel like I'm tempting fate if I am. Emotional as hell too, short tempered, crying out of nowhere, I just wish I could fast forward to the good bit (there is a good bit right?!)

I had brown blood at 5 and 9 weeks, and had period like cramps from around 4 to 10 weeks. Had abdominal scab at epu at 9 weeks, referred by gp. All was well, now 29 weeks with healthy baby. Try not to worry (easy for me to day, I know!), this kind of bleeding is normal when period would have been due - get referred if your local epu for reassurance. And congratulations on your pregnancy :-)

Try and stay calm. What helped me was that there is absolutely nothing you can do that will change the end result. It really is out of your hands and you will cope with either scenario because that's what we do.

I kept getting spotting for weeks until my pregnancy ended recently. It would not let up and was horribly persistent. I think a little bit of dark brown spotting is not necessarily going to turn into anything bad. It really is a throw of the dice in the first trimester.

I relaxed a lot after 12 week scan, but I afraid our befuddled pregnancy brains will always find something to worry about! Currently its tweaky pains and kick counting! I hope everything turns out well for you x

Thank you sebmummy and maryton, this is really reassuring.
Heather what worked for me is to try to distract myself as much as possible. DO NOT google your symptoms, try to watch something or do something fun. Hubby found me in bed crying my eyes out, I thought I was going to go mad. I don't think I had ever been so scared.
I hope like me, when you see the spotting lessen you manage to be a bit more positive. I could be totally wrong and have bad news tomorrow but no matter what I do or say or how I let myself feel (i.e. more positive) unfortunately it won't change the score xxx

I had a mc at 8 weeks with bright red blood. Next pregnancy the brown discharge like you describe at the same point. Thought is was all over but it wasn't, don't panic too much, it could be absolutely fine. Brown bliss is generally thought to be less worrying than red. No guarantees but I've got a a stroppy schoolboy from a pregnancy with brown discharge!

Can you go to the epu for an earlier scan? They should see you with bleeding and cramps.

I can't thank you all enough for your comments, makes me feel less alone (hubby works away all week). I'm trying to distract myself with work, and sebsmummy1 you are absolutely right, I know I need to let nature take it's course, it's just so hard!

I am in the same boat. So done 3 tests last week and all were positive but faint positive. On Friday morning last week there was brown blood, Saturday/Sunday it was red, but there really wasn't a lt at all and I've not been in any pain, very dull uncomfortable feeling but nothing I would say was of concern tbh.

I seen a doc at the start of the week, he thinks I'll be 6 weeks tomorrow, so he has referred me to the local EPU in the hope they can give me a scan, appointment at the end of the week. Very worried but have to stay calm about it.

My boobs were quite sore yesterday and I still feel a bit sicky. Both a doctor and 2 nurses have told me over the phone that women who bleed can go on to have healthy babies and have no problems. I think it's quite common.

Fingers crossed for everyone x

Op I had this at 8 and 10 weeks and was sent for scans both times and all was fine. I had abdominal both times. So I think you could ring midwife tomorrow and ask for a referral, worse that could happen is can't get great picture through abdominal and you'd have to wait until 12 weeks but I don't think this will be the case unless you have a tilted womb/very high bmi. Poor you no wonder you are panicking but lots of people have bleeds and are fine. Fingers crossed that you can get seen tomorrow and that all is fine.

It's scary, get on the phone tomorrow to your gp or mw. They should get you booked in for a scan. Hugs xx
