How easy to tell the gender yourself at 20 week scan?

middleclassdystopia · 06/12/2013 20:49

At our NHS trust they won't tell you sex at 20 week scan.

But I would like to know so dh and I tried to get a good look when she scanned that area.

Baby had bottom to us and legs apart. Couldn't see a penis or anything that looked like one between the legs.

Would we be mad to presume a girl?

Yes.

middleclassdystopia · 06/12/2013 20:53

But surely you would see boys bits?

IHaveSeenMyHat · 06/12/2013 20:54

I couldn't, but then the sonographer didn't linger over that area. But then she was a girl so there wasn't anything to see! I think sometimes boys are very obvious, but not seeing anything is no guarantee it's a girl.

TheDoctrineOfSanta · 06/12/2013 20:56

I wouldn't presume anything!

TurnOffTheTv · 06/12/2013 20:57

Honestly, I wouldn't put money on it! A very good friend of mine was told she was having a girl, and out popped a boy! Everything had been bought, and the room decorated :-( can you have a private 3d scan?

middleclassdystopia · 06/12/2013 21:00

I don't understand how a boy's bits can be hidden!

OP posts:
TheDoctrineOfSanta · 06/12/2013 21:04

Well, they aren't that big at the time! In my area you're allowed to find out and the sonographer was not sure at DS2's scan.

I'd just hate you to have bought lots of dresses or whatever that you then might not use when actually you can't be sure.

FalalalalalalaFiggy · 06/12/2013 21:05

Our boy was so obviously a boy that There was no question about it. Was just as well wanted to know as you couldn't miss it Grin

middleclassdystopia · 06/12/2013 21:07

Will buy neutral clothes to be safe.

I don't mind which it is just curious

There was a thread on here once where someone was offended because the sonographer said girls' genitalia look like a hamburger from the side on the scan at this stage - any resemblance?

Misty9 · 06/12/2013 21:21

I thought boy at our first anomaly scan...then was told that was the umbilical cord Grin ime, it's the balls you can see more easily than the (teeny) penis - ds was standing on his head waving his around! We've had two scans so far and they're fairly sure it's a girl, but they wouldn't say 100%

Congrats!

Misty9 · 06/12/2013 21:22

The sonographer also said girl bits usually look like three lines...anything like that?

neolara · 06/12/2013 21:24

With a girl you can see three lines. I looked with dc2 and then did a lot of googling. Because I didn't know what I was looking for, I really wasn't sure about what we were getting. With dc3, I looked and because I knew what I was looking for, it was quite obvious. I was right.

CrispyFB · 06/12/2013 21:40

Remember you're only seeing a 2D slice of the baby - if his parts aren't in that slice (try chopping DH into wafer thin slices and look at them!) then you won't see them.

Even at the 20 week scan, experienced sonographers deliberately looking for the sex still can get it wrong! It's unusual, but not impossible. I always remember the woman on a forum I was on who had multiple scans post 20 weeks and was always told girl every time. He wasn't.

There's loads of private places that will do sex scans for £40-£80 depending on area - worth considering if you have the funds?

Writerwannabe83 · 06/12/2013 22:40

I was scanned at 16 weeks and there was a very obvious penis Grin

As soon as I saw it I said to the sonographer, "That looks like a Willy to me??!"

she just laughed and said there was no doubt it was a boy Grin

BlackholesAndRevelations · 06/12/2013 23:10

I had no idea what I was looking at first time (sonographer said girl and girl she was!) with my ds I saw his bits clear as crystal! Current baby I guessed the gender (girl) and was confirmed by sonographer- we'll see in a few weeks if we were right! The three lines are what look like the hamburger, and they're vertical, if that helps!

apocketfulofposy · 06/12/2013 23:13

girls look like burgers (like 3 lines) and boys look like mushrooms!I found it easy to tell with all 5 of mine.

Twunk · 06/12/2013 23:16

I had a scan at 20 weeks from exactly the right angle that even I could tell it was a boy! But it depends the position they are in the womb and tbh where they put the scanner!

terilou87 · 06/12/2013 23:31

With all 3 of my boys you could clearly see the balls! Ds1 scan was at 16 weeks too. with my two girls I couldn't make anything out but I didn't know what to look for, but with all 5 of my dc pregnancys, my mother's intuition was right and I just had the feeling I knew the sex long before the scans.
That said if I wasn't told the sex at the scans I wouldn't of trusted myself and gone buying pink/ blue,
I second everyone else who said about private gender scan if yoy want to find out.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 06/12/2013 23:42

IIRC, from a Prof Robert Winston documentary years ago, in utero, boys and girls look very similar . It is only by seeing the penis that you can be sure.

SweetPea86 · 07/12/2013 08:43

Would you not want to pay for a private scan if you want to find out the sex.

I think its a 100 pound I know its a lot but I think it would be worth it :)

SaucyJack · 07/12/2013 08:55

With my DD2, I had a very nice sonographer who took the time to show me her "hamburger" and it is quite clear when you know what you're looking at.

I gather there's no mistaking a penis if you see though!

cheesypastaplease · 07/12/2013 08:58

I wouldn't presume anything. Close friend of mine was told she having a girl at 20 week scan, and she was very surprised when a little boy came out!

theborrower · 07/12/2013 10:57

A vertical hamburger is a good description of a girl's bits - we didn't find out the sex, but I spotted this and guessed, and was right.

OP - if baby had its bum to you, I wouldn't presume anything. Besides, remember that even sonographers can be wrong. I've also heard of friends of friends who were so certain they were having a boy/girl they did the pink/blue thing, and they were wrong.

sambababy · 07/12/2013 11:46

Hamburgers and mushrooms aside lol.... I think I'm in the don't want to know camp, but right now I'm living in a country where this is unheard of. I'm going to tell the sonographer that I don't want to know, but I'm worried I will see something anyway!? It's my first so I don't have any experience looking at these scans, but my feeling is that it's a boy and if he's anything like his dad, he'll be in there waving his manhood around very proudly for all to see!!
