lowlying placenta booked section urgent advice :( x

hi their for most off my pregnancy a had grade 4 pp in out hospital and at 35 weeks had scan it was 9mm from os so doctor hopefull would move further had scan this week at 38+1 and showed placenta 13mm from the os so iv automaticallybeen booked for csection next tues 29/10/2013 my question is my babys head is fully engaged and i have an anterior placenta which means my csec will be more complicated as they will have too cut through too ge too bby and as my baby is engaged isnt that a good sign that a vbirth is still possible and that csection would be more riskier giving that placenta is also anterior any advice or someone with similar experience would be great as really if can would like avoid csec thnks

I really think you should follow your doctors advice on this one! They weigh up all the risks and if thry say a cs is safer than a vb for you and your baby, you should do it. If a vb was safer, then of course they would go with that. I don't think many people on mumsnet have the expertise to make a judgement call here!

I had a cs and it was honestly fine, I was up and about the same day, breastfeeding within an hour of delivery, discharged 24 hours later. I was just glad me and my dc were healthy. If an all natural non intervention birth is what you were after it isn't going to happen even if you did have a vb because of your condition.

If you want proper medical advice, ask your consultant I think. Good luck though, either way you'll be seeing your lovely little baby soon! xxx

thankyou for ur advice yes whatever is safest long as bubs is ok a was just confused with mixed advice a was getting off midwifes as they said as his heads fully engaged that is a good sign he passed placenta as usually that can become the issue that the placenta gets in way i.e causes bleeding etc but fact he is engaged a was hoping was a good sign then theirs the risks that come with anterior placenta csection am sure me n bubs will be fine a have had many operations before a few years back had a uterine myomectomy so basically is like csection but instead they remove the fibroid from womb least this time it will be my little baby thanks again xx:)

Hi I havent had pp but did have an anterior placenta and an an elcs due to prev emcs and it all went fine in fact they never mentioned that the placenta would be a problem.

aw that is good they keep telling me more chance off higher blood loss as theyl have cut through too get too baby but a suppose they have gotta say all the risks a guess a was just over hoping for a vb after getting told fully engaged and good chance placenta moved but guessing 13mm is a little to close for them although i have heard off woman having a trial off labor who are 1cm but ur never going to know the outcome glad ur opp went ok and hope mines does too :) xx

hi just bit off an update very strangly had another small bloody show exaxtly week later this friday from last fridays episode . pinky blood on pad and small jelly like stringy thing sorry tmi then was speaking to spouse yesterday about back off six felt small trickle and sure enough on wiping was fresh red was not pouring out or gushing soaked through top off pad small patch and again another match sized tiny jelly stringy thing again as wasnt any more fresh blood actively coming out . i laid done for hour or two could feel small tightings in stomach and whay felt like bottom baby still very active. and not having serious pains or cramps just slight back ache and then at 1am more not thick bit slightly watery dishcharge/blood came out but was more pink/brown/peachy and other small jellylike thing phoned maternity triage giving a do have low lying that is 13mm from os and baby is fully engaged they said more likley a show and if a have any more fresh red more than teaspoon to head in . am very confused and wondering if it coukd been causef by baby dropping further or cervix or sure enough bloodyshow av heard alot women do get period like shows guess just waiting game now although am getting scannef begore elcs as case placenta has moved more and storys or women in similar situations or experiences would b great thanks ;) xxxxx

I think they lik e it to be at least 2.5cm or 3 cm from the internal os to let a vaginal birth take place. otherwise you could lose too much blood and be dangerous for you and baby. I had pp earlier this pregnancy but it has now moved out of the way to 4cm.
I think you need to talk to your consultant asap if you have any signs of labour. I've not had petsonal experience of c section but I imagine a planned one is pregerable to an emcs.

I guess it also depends who is available to do the birth at the time. I expect some consultants might let it go closer than others. I think mine was within 2 cm and they were talking c section unless it moved but I am also on blood thinners which made my risk of bleeding higher. x

yeah well thats why a called a also called this morning as am not having much on pad its just the white milky stuff but its peachy color and they told me too onlycall back if freshred more than spoonfill waters or less movements am back in tmrw for my bloods for opp then scan a think yeah a know differant doctors have differ guidlines a just thought as my babys already engaged fully that was a good sign and that possible the placenta might move further in a week as at 34 it was cpp then 35 it was 9from oss then last monday was 13mm so never know am just hoping it has if not its elcs tuesday am first in :) oh thats great news at what stage did it move to 4cm xxx

Daniel, I had last scan at 34 weeks so it moved between 24 weeks and then. hope you get it all sorted. I know what you r saying though as often the head can't engage because of the placenta so in a way that's gd. x sorry, I'm not reading well as I'm due Tuesday too and hoping the storm Will bring on labour!!!!
I think it can stl move though even at this late stage so fingers crossed.

yeah oh thats great news a think a was just more shocked too see the fresh red yesterday but as it stopped and was also some show their not concerned as now is pink yeah well thats what av heard that often there fear off bleed happen is when heads engaging but as this one head already has who knows this pp and lowlying stuffhas turned me into a mad woman lol a hope u go into labor soon have u had any signs :)

I had ds2 7 weeks ago and had a low anterior placenta. I was admitted at 36 weeks and was told they would deliver by cs at 38 weeks, but then after 4 days had a transvaginal scan and they said it was 2.9cm away so I could have a vb. I went home then had another tv scan at 39 weeks and was told it was over 4cm away so I would be fine for a vb.

However, that night I woke up losing large clots of blood and went in and had an emergency cs. The bleeding was v scary and really I felt like I should never have been let out!

The op itself was fine, it was done by a v senior consultant because of the risk of bleeding and I had a balloon catheter and b lynch stitches to stop the bleeding. It was slick and quick and I recovered well.

In you situation the placenta seems v close so I would go for a planned cs. Good luck.

I suspect they are looking at controlled risk as opposed to uncontrolled risk. If they do a scheduled C-section, they are there, you are already anaesthetised, and they can immediately handle most things that may crop up. If, however, you try vaginal birth and it causes a life threatening problem, it is realistically going to create more risk for you and the baby as then they would have to do an emergency C-section in less than ideal circumstances.

oh yikes Lou. would 4 cm still be considered close then? I had small bleed at 20 weeks but nothing after that. mine was 2/5 engaged at last appt ( its 3rd baby though) no show or anything yet though :-(

Well they said that 4cm should have meant it was ok but then it obviously wasn't . I had a debrief afterwards and they still didn't really know what had caused the bleeding, but the surgeons said they did have to cut through placenta to get in.

They said, rather unhelpfully that scans, both abdominal and vaginal, aren't that accurate, which was a bit annoying seeing as I'd had 11 of them!!

Had you bled throughout the pregnancy?

oh dear av heard so many storys about people having vb with less than 2cm and even 1cm and being ok then people with 4cm n not being ok must just all differ as everyones experiences are not same am just be glad whn its over am more off worrier now than a was when a had grade 4 cpp . glad u and baby are ok lou sounds very scary did they say was caused by placenta or could it have been seperate issue ?other issue am concernd about us my myomectomy a had fibroid removed from womb which is basically same as section apart from their not taking out a baby a guessing theyl just go through same scar

I had a grade 3 PP covering os with anterior placenta, had 4 massive bleeds, the last one at 37 weeks and was possibly the start of labour but i was in hospital on bedrest so had emergency section. If you bleed you should call 999 and go to hospital, i was told this by numerous drs, though you may think its a small bleed the reality is it could start and not stop, and gush like a tap, this risks you and the babys life ! as for a section, again there is little choice as bleeding from the placenta in labour could starve the baby of oxygen, i know this might all sound like i'm being dramatic but its not worth risking a life over :(
A consultant will do the section, cutting through the placenta is more risky re risk of blood loss but they can manage this and hopefully it will all be straightforward as my section ended up being :)

a hope u meet ur lo soon lou these pp pregnancys make u constantly on edge i feel like a ticking time bomb .yeah lou all doctors consultants say somthing diff which doesnt help then most midwifes havr said theyd do trial.off labor whatever the outcome as long as my little guy and me are ok i will be able to relax :) x

I think my placenta was anterior too.

No I'd had no Bleeding at all until that night at 39 weeks.

yeah same mine is b2b and anterior placenta ur meant feel less movements but a feel him constantly active 24/7 so who knows:/ . hi tinkerbell yeah av been told now that its stopped and is just discharge too keep an eye on it . your experience sounds awfull a had grade4 till 35 weeks then thats wheb mines has went to lowlying glad u and ur lo was ok and u had safe deliverey . scary times at moment but gotta stay positive :) x

My baby was transverse , typical position given my placenta was over cervix :) he was never coming outta my foof !! I hated the section, he was my 5th and i birthed the others normally and all fairly easily so to go through that was crap, but being delivered safely was all that mattered :)

I had grade 4 PP twice, with DC2&3 (Tink I've name changed, but I usually see you on PP posts) With DC3 I also had a large anterior placenta, extending up almost to the bra line. I had the blood recycling machine se up as he were expecting a huge blood loss, but mine was easier than expected.

Personally, I would not risk it, but I have had 2 unstable PP pregnancies a total of about 10 weeks in hospital between the two pregnancies and an emergency section for bleeding.
