Fetal pole but no hearbeat, measuring one week smaller

frutilla · 19/06/2013 21:51

I went for a 7 week scan today and was told the fetus was small and measured 6 weeks. The length was 3.3mm. The sonographer couldn't find the hearbeat. He said it was because it was too small and to come back in 2 weeks.
I'm anxious that I'm going to miscarry. I had a mc at 10 weeks before DS 1 and DS2 and I'm scared it's going to happen again.
Anyone had any luck in this position? I don't have any cramps or spotting yet.
Thanks!!!

I think I made an error. It was the fetus that was 3.3mm, not sure what the fetal pole is I thought it was a name for the early fetus but wikipedia says differently.

you could easily be out a few days and at this gestation its hard to see a heatbeat. A day could make all the difference. Try not to worry.

poocatcherchampion · 19/06/2013 22:39

I went back a week at around this point and caught up a week at week 8 when they rescanned. measurements are so small its hard to be accurate. don't worry unless there is something to worry about! let us know how you get on, the waiting is horrid!

frutilla · 19/06/2013 22:40

Thanks lucybrad! I know you're right, I'm just thinking myself into a hole. Will try to focus on something else.

You could definitely be a few days out. I went to the EPU with bad pains thinking I was 6 weeks pg, nothing on the scan, went back 2 weeks later and there was a fetal pole and heartbeat. Turned out I was 4 weeks on my first scan, so shows you just how little time you need for things to develop. Good luck x

Holly94 · 19/06/2013 23:04

Also the sonographer told me the dates often change as the pregnancy progresses as very early on it's very easy to make mistakes as everything is so small.

frutilla · 20/06/2013 00:40

Thanks everyone for giving me hope. Will update. Have to try not to keep googling as so much conflicting stuff out there!

Both myself and another mumsnetter have had the same thing recently. Went for scans at what we thought were 6+5 and were dated to 5+5.

Both myself and the other mumsnetter went back last Tuesday and for both of us, our babies had caught up and we have been put back to our original dates with strong HB's

meg2106 · 20/06/2013 07:30

Hi Frutilla... did you have an internal scan? I went for a early scan this week , I was 6 week 2 days.... the sonographer was not able to see much from external scan and suggested for an internal one.... its lot more clearer with the internal scan and we were able to see the heart beat.

frutilla · 20/06/2013 15:57

4athome, that sounds promising, keeping my fingers crossed that's what's happened to me. I still have strong ms and headaches etc, feel pregnant. Just, this never happened with DS1 and DS2, they were always the right size and I'm 100% sure of my dates.
meg2106, yes it was an internal one. He tried hard to get the heartbeat, I thought the machine started to flicker at one point, but he just couldn't get it going properly. Really hoping and praying now!

Frutilla, Also on my scan she did adominal and then told me to empty my bladder for an internal. Then when she did the internal, she said the image had actually appeared better on the abdominal scan.

I think your measurements sound good. Mine were 3mm and they dated me at 5+5 when I was in fact 6+5 and baby has caught up a whole week within 10 days.

frutilla · 20/06/2013 21:52

Thanks 4athome. My doctor wants me to have another scan on Fri 28th so I will know for sure one way or another by then. He was very non-comittal, but agreed that 3.3mm was very small for my LMP.

Updating for the sake of others searching archives. Had another scan, fetal pole hasn't grown and no heartbeat so it's not viable, unfortunately. My doctor wants me to wait for it to pass naturally, he has prescribed me pulsatilla homeopathic treatment. As I had two sections he doesn't want to prescribe any proper medicine. He says I should pass it within 10 days...

Thanks both! At least I feel better now than I did during the wait between scans, that was definitely the worst part.

I just wanted to give you a hug Frutilla. A similar thing happened to me in March. Husband and I attended 3 scans, a week apart before we were given the 'definite' conclusion of it being a failed pregnancy :( my body was showing no signs of ending the pregnancy so I was given the ERPC procedure under general anaesthetic. We were gutted as we so much want to hold a living baby of ours in our arms. Our daughter was stillborn in 2011, I had a chemical pregnancy in 2013 after 6 months of chemo treatment for a cancer they'd found, and then the ERPC in March of this year. I wanted to give you some hope though and finish on a happier note, I am currently 10 weeks pregnant and hopefully everything will go well this time :)

MrFranklyShankly · 29/06/2013 14:33

So sorry frutilla to hear your going thru this....I went through the exact same thing this time last year and I know what you mean about the waiting between scans nearly being the worst part of it, so my heart goes out to you. Cry as much as you want.....I cried buckets and it took a while to come back to feeling like me again so take plenty of rest and be kind to yourself. Best of luck for the future xx F

MrFranklyShankly · 29/06/2013 14:36
