Am I pregnant? Faint line on test after an hour

Hi,

This is my first time on here so apologies if I've posted in the wrong area.

My HB and I have been trying for a baby for about a year now with no luck. I always get excited when I come close to the day my period is due and like to do a test asap. I did a Boots one yesterday which looked to be negative but then I happened to look at it a couple of hours later and it had a really faint line across it (barely readable)
Today is the day my period is due and so first thing this morning I did another boots test and it still came up negative but then about half-hour to an hour later I had another look and once again there is another faint line.
I was just wondering if this was normal with the Boots HPT and whether I should wait for another few days or try a different brand?
Any advice would be appreciated. We're so desperate for children and we were starting to get worried that there may be some sort of problem as the rest of the women in my family seem to fall straight away.

I've been researching online and noticed that there is the possibility of an evaporation line though I'm unclear whether that would still come up in the same blue as the positive test result.

Hmm think they aren't supposed to be as accurate after about half hour. Can you wait a couple of days to test again? I know it's the hardest thing ever!

An evaporation line can look just like a faint positive. That's why they say don't read it after the required time. Try and wait a few days- then you should get a proper answer. I know how hard it is to wait, but try!

Hi this happened to me first test, faint line came up after an hour you know the situation where you do it and nothing and throw it away but can't resist a peep again later! Did one the next morning nothing for half an hour then a faint line. The next day stronger line but still faint but within the test time. Now I'm 31 weeks! The waiting is a nightmare and I keep my fingers crossed for you!

Maybe try a pink line test like an FRER. At least they are a lot less likely to give you an evaporation line and are very sensitive, more so than boots ones. Try again with fmu. I'm afraid it could be a yes or no at the moment, but a faint line an hour after testing doesn't help you either way. Sorry, I know how hard the waiting is. Good luck

Same happened to me, I took a test and then actually forgot about it , came back an hour later and there was the faintest suggestion of a pale pink line. I read if it's coloured it may well be positive, just early days - as evap line is grey. It grew darker and darker and doc confirmed a BFP a week later!

I did read the pink ones are a tad more sensitive so would second Marmite suggestion.

Thanks everyone.... I tried with a digital an hour ago and came up with 'Not Pregnant' :-( I read somewhere that they may not be as sensitive so I'm trying to stay positive. I'm going away for a few days now with the girls and wont be back until Tuesday so i think I'm going to have to try and leave it until I get back before doing another test. I want my HB to be the first one to know if I am pregnant and I know that I wouldnt be able to keep it in if I found out while I was away!

Thanks for all your advice, I'll def pick up one of those FR tests and maybe try to stop staring so hard at the results next time!

I had this happen with my first pg test and I waited for another couple of days to test again and that time the line was bolder and more obvious then I waited another couple of days and did the Clearblue digital Pg test and it said I was 3 weeks plus with the word pregnant and with that evidence I then went to the doctor and I am now 9 weeks gone thats what I suggest wait and then do after a couple of days ..... good luck.

What kind of Boots test was it? The kind with the +? I agree the first response early response are very sensitive and when I had a couple of are they/aren't they positives on cheap tests I got a really clear positive on a FRER. If you're very early days, the digital may well not be sensitive enough. Did you crack open the digital test to look inside like any crazy TTCer would?!

ha ha, no I didnt crack it open... I didn't even realise you could... (runs to find test! ha ha!)

Yeah, the boots one was one of those + ones. I've done them before and not seen that line which is what made me think that it may mean something. I cant remember how long I left it until i looked last time though.

I've had two false positives with those Boots ones The I of the + was there but thin and over to the left. I thought it was positive but it wasn't. I would retest - sensible me suggests you retest Monday/Tuesday. In reality in your shoes I'd be running off to Tesco to get an FRER twin pack and retesting in the morning! :)

You had 2 false positives faith? I thought that was super rare!

Yes two false positives with the same brand of test (different cycles but twin pack). I googled it - I am by no means the only one with this type of test. I considered writing a strongly worded letter. Instead I just never bought them again and posted on many threads in conception about the perils of that type of test!

Bad news I'm afraid :-( Turns out I was just a day late. Gutted really. Silly of me to have got my hopes up. I think next month we're going to try Ovulation tests as so far we've only been working it out with timing etc. I think we need to start trying to narrow it down. Any tips would be very welcome :-)

Best tip I can think of: don't let an ovulation test dictate when you have sex. Have sex all the time, regardless of whether you might be ovulating! Your partner's, ahem, contribution can linger for quite a few days, so aim to already have a liberal quantity of, ahem, baby-potential already in the area when the tests say you're ovulating. If you've been trying for a year then it might be worth getting some basic tests done just to confirm you are ovulating. Meanwhile, ebay super cheap tests or amazon are as accurate as fr and about £2 for 15. Save yourself some money.

How are you currently timing sex? Sex every 2-3 days throughout your cycle is best but there are ways to pinpoint ovulation if you're interested in that.

Thanks girls. Yeah, we've been having sex every 2 - 3 days though it's a bit more difficult at the moment as we have a couple of friends living with us while waiting for a house purchase to go through (the walls are very thin! ha ha!).
I've mentioned the tests to my HB but I think we'll try the Ovulation tests up until Christmas now and then if still no luck, head to the docs. I'm worried about trying too hard and taking the fun out of it. We've only been married for eighteen months and dont want to risk it feeling like a chore with tests and lots of planning if you know what I mean.

I never got on with the cheap tests but really liked the :) clearblue tests. No is it/isn't it? You need to test in the afternoon, ideally around 1-2pm (I used to wait til I got home at 4.30 and it was fine). You need to save your pee for about 4 hours before you test too (the afternoon allows the LH to rise and the 4 hours allows concentration). I found them helpful to know when I was likely to ovulate and therefore when to expect my period (my cycle was never too crazy but a bit irregular). However it doesn't guarantee you'll ovulate after the surge so you should continue with the regular if sleathy at moment! sex.

I found that I have quite a change in cervical discharge thickness around ovulation. Lots of online info on it try this for a guide

Okay, so I have no idea what's going on now.

I thought I had come on my period but I just had really light spotting which started Sunday afternoon and seems to have stopped this morning.

I only jsut got back from a few days away and pretty tired so I'm going to do another test in the morning.

Anyone else had anything similar?

Thanks for the advice re. the Ovulation tests. I'll definitely be trying them next month once I figure out what's going on with me at the moment.

Have you done another test since Sunday? Could it possibly have been an implantation bleed I wonder? As you are past your period due date I would do another test if I were you.
