Getting pregnant while using condoms

I am a bit worried I might be pregnant. I have a DS and a 10 mo DD and have only had sex once (this month) in the last seven months cos DD has been such an atrocious sleeper. We used a condom and it didn't split or come off but now I am on day 40 of my cycle and, apart from a bit of a sore back and the occasional twinge, no sign of my period. My longest cycles since DD have been 34 days and I'm really starting to worry.
Is it possible to use condoms correctly, all appear to be OK but then get pg?
Being pg would be a bit of a disaster.

No contraceptive measure is 100% guaranteed. Get yourself a test.

lagartija · 18/03/2012 16:08

I know, I need to POAS. I don't live in the UK and they are v expensive and I keep thinking the chances I'm pg are so low, I'm sure my period will start and it'll be the equivalent of weeing over a 10 euro note, but now I'm thinking I'm so worried, it's probably making it even later, even if I'm not pg. Stress can delay a period too, can't it?
Day 41 tomorrow, think I'll have to cave in and buy a test then if nothing happens tonight. I do feel quite crampy but then I felt exactly like I was about to get my period when i was pg with dS.

Yes, stress can delay a period, but poas will relieve at least the stress of not knowing. Though it could also give you a whole new thing to stress about.

A friend of mine became pregnant after sex with a condom when as far as she was aware nothing had gone wrong. But she was fairly young and relatively inexperienced at the time so might not have noticed. I think she suspects that the man in question might have noticed something and not said anything.

All the same, it is very unlikely. Have you checked with your partner to see if he noticed anything?

The only other thing is that I've noticed in the past that when I haven't had sex for a while and then do, my cycle often goes funny, almost as if your cycle pauses for a while to see what's going to happen. So that could be the explanation?

Doing a test is usually quite a good way of bringing on a period so might be worth the 10E for peace of mind?

lagartija · 18/03/2012 16:25

Yes, I'm thinking that as soon as I've bought the fucker I'm sure to get the mother of all periods. I have been very irregular in the past, pre DC, including the occasional 40 something cycle and even a 56 day cycle. Since DD (10 mo) they've ranged from 25 to 34 days. I do feel quite crampy but still no actual perod.
DH says he thinks there's no way I'm pg and that nothing went wrong with the condom at all (it wasn't out of date either). I'm just worried and getting more jittery the longer it goes on.
I'm lte enough not to have to use first morning wee if I get a test tomorrow, aren't I?

OP posts:
OldLadyKnowsNothing · 18/03/2012 16:29

Could you save a sample of first morning wee? ?10 is a lot to risk wasting with an uncertain outcome.

lagartija · 18/03/2012 16:38

good idea.

I became became pregnant after sex with a condom when as far as I was aware nothing had gone wrong.
We were using condoms because prior to that I had become pregnant on the pill without having missed any, taken meds or any of the other usual reasons it might fail.
I seem to be very fertile though as fell very quickly with my first two (planned) ones too

HandMadeTail · 18/03/2012 16:49

I got pregnant on the Mirena coil. 100,000 to 1 apparently. With condoms, it's more like 90 odd to 1 with no protection at all being about 20 to 1 IIRC.

So, you don't have to be doing anything wrong to fall pregnant using a condom.

Sorry.

lagartija · 18/03/2012 16:49

shit. I also got pg quickly both times (2nd month).

OP posts:
lagartija · 18/03/2012 17:57

so, if you use them correctly and you get pg, what is it that goes wrong? They had a teeny tiny hole?

Makeminealarge · 18/03/2012 18:01

Had to worry you but my dd2 who is due in three weeks was the outcome of using a condom Envy. I was also on the pill but due to travelling at the time I forgot to take it on time by about two hours so we used a condom for extra precaution. miracle baby as I like to call her Grin get a test and put your mind to rest.

Mama1980 · 18/03/2012 18:03

Hi I also got pregnant whilst using condoms - sorry. Nothing was obviously wrong at the time. My gp says its quite rare but not unheard of often there's either a minor flaw or one just escapes but equally stress could be a factor, I'd just test and see.

Cewafwb · 18/03/2012 18:05

I got pregnant (still going) with number 4 whilst using a condom - and there is nothing inexperienced about us or our use of condoms! It was also the wrong time of the month and I only have one tube! Having said that - I am the person who having taken the morning after pill, correctly, within 24 hours of the accident, got pregnant with twins although one was in my womb and died and the other was in my fallopian tube and was alive and well albeit an ectopic hence only having one tube! Good luck and let us know.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 18/03/2012 18:07

It may be a teeny tiny hole (though I'd expect that to lead to bursting) or it may be that a small amount of precum was on the outside when it was put on, or, well, there are all sorts of things that can go wrong. Sorry.

confuzed90 · 18/03/2012 19:18

Good luck for your test tomorrow! No protection is 100%

lagartija · 18/03/2012 19:35

bollocks.

lagartija · 19/03/2012 08:29

Day 41 and still nothing. DH should be back with a test in about half an hour and that will at least tell me what's going on one way or another.

OP posts:
leftwingharpie · 19/03/2012 08:36

OP it's not unusual to have the occasional long cycle. It's most unlikely that you're pregnant. I'm normally pretty regular but this cycle I ovulated on CD29, which means it will be a 42 day cycle. I've had a 45 day one before - again late ovulation.

Iheartpasties · 19/03/2012 08:39

keep us in the loop

lagartija · 19/03/2012 09:19

leftwingharpie I know that's the most logical explanaton and, come to think of it I did have eWCM late on, just makes me twitchy as being pg would not be great now. Will nip up and do test now. Wish me luck.

OP posts:
HugeFurryWishingStool · 19/03/2012 09:22

Good luck!

kalidasa · 19/03/2012 09:31

Late-appearing EWCM is a reassuring sign! Fingers crossed for you.

lagartija · 19/03/2012 10:32

BFN!! Thank God for that! . Now to sort out some iron clad (not literally obviously..ouch) contraception.

HugeFurryWishingStool · 19/03/2012 10:38

Congrats! (Well, not, but ykwim!) Grin
