I asked a shop assistant once and her reply was "what do you mean pasteurised?" So there was my doubt.

Obviously it was a one off lady who didn't have a clue.

Hi OP the cheap stuff is usually always pasteurised. Its the posher places that make real mayo with eggs, so don't worry. For the first 4 weeks I didn't even know I was pregnant and was scoffing wine, beer, cheese, rare steak. I'm almost 17 weeks now and so far everything has been fine. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy :)

It'll be fine. Most mayo is pasteurised.

I think the food standards agency has a list of foods to avoid in pregnancy. I can't link from iPod but check that out.

Of the top of my head a few that j remember are:

soft/veined cheese
shell fish, marlin, sword fish etc
salad from bags
undercooked meat

I'm sure there's more just can't remember them at moment.

I would avoid salad bar type set ups where people dip in themselves.

Salad from bags? Thats a new one for me.

I presume it becomes ok if I open the bag and give it another wash myself?

Crosshair · 15/09/2011 14:34

Yep just give it a wash :)

I thought shell fish was fine if cooked. Either way they're just guidelines not rules set in stone. :)

LawrieMarlow · 15/09/2011 14:34

When I was pregnant with DD six years ago I was told not to eat salad in bags. I smiled and nodded :)

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 15/09/2011 16:34

shellfish is fine if it's cooked, so it's the raw oysters you need to avoid.

I'm 31 wks and still eating soft boiled eggs, sushi and bagged salad. I;m avoiding blue cheese, pate and liver and that's about it. Rare steak is OK as long as it's not raw.

Merinda · 15/09/2011 16:51

Salad in bags surprises me too - this is definitely not mentioned on any NHS websites.
What is wrong with that?

kat2504 · 15/09/2011 16:56

I think its because there is a teeny weeny tiny chance it may not have been washed quite enough and therefore you might ingest some dirt. They are assuming that those of us who chop up salad for ourselves are better at washing salad. I don't think that assumption was made by watching me prepare salad!

Sidge · 15/09/2011 17:06

Bagged salad presents a small risk of salmonella and E.coli food poisoning.

The risk is small but if you are entirely risk-averse you may want to avoid prepared salad bags.

MsScarlettInTheLibrary · 15/09/2011 17:46

I love how they tell you to avoid bagged salad and rare steak and other ridiculous advice that prevents you eating food that is good for you, but don't tell you to avoid takeaways, reheated rice or chicken, service station pasties, aspartame, and all kinds of dodgy chopped reformed nonsense.

spannermary · 15/09/2011 18:27

I'm absolutely fine with not eating salad! Chicken baguettes however....YUM!! xx

thefirstMrsDeVere · 15/09/2011 18:34

That mayo would have come out of a massive vat of cash and carry generic brand.

Dont worry.
