reward for using potty?

My nearly 2 year old has just done a wee in the potty

I was so excited I gave him a (rather unhealthy) treat

I've done the wrong thing haven't I

I literally have no idea what I'm doing

I did this with DD. Little bugger started beating the system by doing a tiny wee, getting her chocolate button, then going back to do more wee! I started cutting the buttons into quarters! Planning on not doing this with DS, but who knows what's right?!

Ha ha at beating the system. They are clever when they want to be!

Stickers is a great idea. I don't really want to get in the habit of giving treats. He has a crap (excuse the pun) appetite anyway so don't want to encourage it.

Also, obviously very early stages of training. He wants to run around the garden. Do I pop a nappy on? Or bring the potty out?

Hope someone can advise. I'd take the potty out if he's keen. Mine runs away when he sees it, so I'm not bothering for now!

I always thought I would never bribe, especially with food but my ds is terrified of pooing on the potty.

So I have resorted to saying he can have a chocolate if he does. He's still bloody terrified though and will hold off if he can until nighttime or go in his pants.

Stickers didn't cut it for him.

He didn't need any bribes for wees though just lots of clapping and cheering!

I don't think there is anything wrong with chocolate 'encouragement' for this! Ds is about 2 weeks in to potty training, he gets a smartie for a wee and a mini choc egg for a poo. He already forgets about the smartie sometimes, and he never asks for either if were out of the house. He was also doing the tiny wee trick to get a smartie again, that has pretty much stopped.

It's really (hopefully) just for a Short time, so personally I say go with what works. I don't think stickers would have done it for us because we play with them quite a lot anyway.

Just been out to buy a sticker book. It's of airplanes which he loves

We haven't played very much with stickers so hopefully it'll be a novelty for him

so we've had one other wee in the potty and a little accident.

he loved the whole sticker thing and has already "cheated" me by pretending to do a wee and then asking for a sticker.

I gave in and let him have it

I did stickers and for every x amount of stickers they got a treat.

I slowly increased the number of stickers needed for a treat.

Once they were pretty reliable they moved to a sticker for a day with no accidents, a week with no accidents and they got a magazine/book/small toy.

I let mine put stickers on the wall near the potty in the living room... we call it the wall of achievement...

she asked what is achievement, and I think she gets it...

she loves her big peppa stickets for a poo

We have worked out that he would rather put the stickers on the potty itself, rather than the book that came with the stickers.

He is in nursery today and so will be wearing nappies.

How does it work at nursery though? Should I tell them i am attempting potty training? Will they accommodate and let him wander around with no nappy and have to clean up any mess? Sorry, clueless!!

At our nursery they have little kid sized toilets and the kids go there by themselves. we put her in pull ups to start with then pants. in case of accidents they bag all the clothes up and you bring home some ripe smelling stuff - some staff will rinse things, others just take away the worst poo and leave the rest (retch)

Yep... If it was too bad they binned the pants themselves... I told them they could...

We are now close to 2.5 weeks with no accidents so I think things are great!!

My dd is nearly 2y 7m

Should I wait until he's got a better handle on it though? He defo hasn't got it yet. Or by not telling them now, am I hindering his chances of getting it

We used chocolate buttons as potty training rewards and I don't regret it. They are something really special (in our house anyway) that were much coveted, so really worked. You can quickly cut back and the DCs didn't seem to notice. We started with one for a wee, two for a poo. After a few days, none for wees and one for a poo. After another week or so, just one at the end of the day if no accidents. Once the packet ran out we stopped!

We used smarties: one for a wee (or half a tube if you're softy DH ) and a little car for a poo. We'd been to a Santa grotto last Christmas and the little gift was a box of 12 matchbox-sized cars, I'd been saving them for this Christmas' stocking filler as DS has enough cars. They came in really handy for potty training. He calls them his 'ka-ka cars'

It took about two weeks for him to get potty training in general, but another two weeks to tell us he needs to go. He has mostly been runnung around naked, but we want him to be able to ask to go to the toilet.

He's had a couple of accidents at home - poo in the garden! But none out of the house. Surprisingly he's dry at night, which I didn't anticipate at all. Still stick a nappy on anyway as we still cosleep.

Sounds like you're heading in the right direction, OP. Oh, and DS doesn't give a flying fig for stickers as a reward, so it depends on the child!

He just asked for potty and did a wee in there! The stipulation was that the potty had to be next to the toilet and I had to sit (properly, with knickers down and all!) on the toilet. And mummy do wee!

I made a fuss and gave him a sticker which he was well pleased with. He tried it on a minute later and pretended to do a wee for another sticker but I didn't give in this time
I've got chocolate at the ready for his first poo !

We did one smartie for wee, two for poo. Got through a tube for were and said there would be no more for weed once the tube was gone, then a tube for poos. Seems to have worked, though dc2 is still loving praise and is telling everyone she meets about her poo of the day...

Ds needed the same to get going as well as the long term motivation of a scooter after 20 days of good pottying. Dd is younger and will get the scooter once he gets a larger one - she's too small still.

Smartjes will not be seen in this house again until dd's preschool jabs!
