Post baby hair loss

Hi feeling really desperate about my hair situation. DS2 aged 4months. Washed my hair this morning and so much fell out. I now have a receding hairline around my temples and parting is looking sparse too. Had the same with DS1 but it seems worse this time. Scared I'm going to be completely bald soon. Anyone else had this? What did you do? Thanks

I doubt it very much you will go bald, I've had 4 kids and everytime I've had kids I've lost a lot of hair and it is very frightening and so convincing u will go bald. I had my 4 kid 8 months ago and it has now slowed down abit. Before one stroke of my hair when I'm washing it, I would have loads in my hand, I didn't do anything in the end.

Watching with interest. Going through the same thing.

PP, did your hair go back to its usual state after?

I had this so badly. Turned out I was very iron deficient. Might be worth asking to have ferritin levels checked by your GP.

I went through this, dh used to have to wipe my back after a shower because so much of my hair had fallen out and was stuck to me 🤢 it's growing back now but did look awful around my temples for a while!

petals my hair eventually started to regrow but temple area was never completely full again.
Margot thanks I'm going to GP tomorrow as have been feeling really unwell for weeks following a throat infection and was anaemia during pregnancy. I think I'm generally rundown as having a tough time at the moment as both DM and DF have been diagnosed with major illnesses in last few weeks so have been going back and forth to hospitals. So sure that worry has contributed.

Happened to me too twice - started googling wigs I was convinced I'd lose it all or it would be permanently noticeable around temples.

Doubt it made a difference but I bought those liquid iron sachets, biotin and the hair nail vitamins (went a bit mad in amazon) and didn't brush my hair much either and used intensive conditioner when washed hair once a week (washed it every couple of days before).Ultimately I think your body eventually recovers from birth.

Happened to me too. When washing it and rinsing through I'd be pulling clumps out. Hair would be everywhere in my home! It's starting to sort itself out now that my child is 10 months. Weirdly though my hair line has changed now. Before it would go back (reminding me of micky mouse shape) not it's round and doesn't recede back. It's bad but I haven't had my hair cut for 11 months as aftwr my baby was born in was too worried about my hair loss. I should now go get it done!

I lost loads of hair after both mine and it took a while to grow back, but it did. The best thing to do is go and see your hair stylist and get them to cut it so the loss is less noticeable and then thank your lucky stars that winter is coming and you can wear a hat!

Thanks for replies and reassurance. Went to gp yesterday and have been sent for full blood count and thyroid blood tests.

Mine started falling out during my twin pregnancy due to hormones, anaemia and zinc deficiency. I recommend taking iron and zinc supplements, don't bother with expensive shampoo - it's hormonal, it won't. Mine stopped and started growing back about 9 months pp. I now have crazy temple tufts. Most mums I know are the same.

I’m 17 weeks pp and my hair loss is crazy, it’s just falling out! This is my second child and hair loss wasn’t this bad first time around.

I have ridiculously thick hair so luckily it’s not noticeable to most bit I reckon give lost about half the volume, judging by my ponytail. When will it end?! I’m sick of hoovering up my hair and then having to defanged the bloody hoover brush head.

We went away for a week and when I looked at the pictures I wanted to delete them all as in certain light and positions I looked completely bald. wish I had thick hair too. No sign of it slowing down yet and only 5months pp although hoping it will be stopping around 8months as pp suggests.

Me too Mumma. I was very ill at the start of my pregnancy, it started then. It carried on till my baby was 18 months old. Finally saw my GP then and was tested. I am anaemic too. GP thinks I probably have been, to some extent, all that time. I did take iron tablets (ferrous sulfate) during pregnancy for a few weeks but they didn’t help.

I have now been taking iron tablets (Galfer?) for almost 3 months and am about to be tested again. About 2 weeks in my hair started growing back round my temples and is now about 3cm long. It’s really soft and I love stroking it he he.

So although it’s most likely hormonal it’s worth seeing your doctor as there may be something else. Growing, delivering, and feeding a baby takes a lot out of your body!

This is happening to me too. This is baby number 3 for me but the hair loss is completely normal.
I’ve been waiting for it to happen and it usually does for me when baby is 4 months. My little one is 4 months and sure enough I have hair brushes full and clumps dropping out!

On a normal day you naturally lose about 100 hairs. During pregnancy this process stops so you retain all of the hair that you usually would have shed hence, you end up looking blooming during pregnancy with a bountiful head of locks! (This is not always the case for everyone!)
When your pregnancy hormones finally leave, your hair growth switches back to its normal phases and so all the hair that you should have shed during pregnancy comes out in one go. This is why it is so noticeable.

Please be assured that your hair will return to normal once your hormones have settled. Obviously you have to wait for hair to grow back though!

As a tip;
If you have dark hair and you are worried about the look of sparse temple hair I’ve found that using L’Oréal grey root spray lightly sprayed in this area makes it look better. Worth a try if you are really stressing!

No time to post links but go google how low iron and low vitamin D3 are connected to hair loss.

Get your GP to check your levels and ask him to check your B12 as well because they don't normally check it.

I’ve just started taking a multi vit with B12 and iron as I’m vegetarian and have had to cut out dairy and egg from my diet too as DD intolerant. Wonder if the sheer volume I’m losing is connected

Sleep, if you're a vegetarian, get your GP to check your B12, iron, ferritin.

I had quite bad hair loss and anaemia,it has slowed down alot at 6 month am also taking Spatone iron supplement the Apple one and feel much much better. This is a really good supplement as no nausea x

Thanks everyone I have made a note of all the suggestions to take to my dr on Friday for discussion. My hair is dark, long and curly due to not having a lot of time I tie it back as it goes wild if I leave it loose. With DS1 I still had a bit of time to straighten it which I think helped disguise the bald bits.

I was also anemic throughout pregnancy with really breathless. Also had severe HG throughout and migraines which I'm still getting. Generally feel crap.

Mine happened at around 4mths too. I lost a lot at the temples, and thinned all over. My baby is 1 now and the temples have two inches of regrowth, plus it's grown back all over to be nearly normal again (or what I remember as normal!)

It's horrible in the shower. I used to brush beforehand to try to make it less stressful.

Thanks KalaLaka that's really comforting to know. I think I will try brushing first as it's soul destroying watching all the hair come out in clumps.
