This was posted by onebatmother on the webchat thread. I think it deserves a thread of its own.

Excellent speech. I challenge the Conservative and LibDem supporting MNers to link to a speech by the other leaders which comes close to this.

Reminds me of the speech he made after Labour won the election in '97. I remember thinking he should have been PM at the time and not Blair.

Onebat says you have to be logged in to FB to see it.

(I didn't have to actually log in perhaps summat automatic happened.)

He should have been PM. This speech gives us a glimpse of what might have been (she said sentimentally)

Btw both Cameron and Clegg spoke at the same event, but it seems to have been generally agreed that Brown wiped the floor with them.

Skegness · 04/05/2010 18:36

Yes- tis excellent.

Skegness · 04/05/2010 18:41

Only to be expected, Molesworth. This type of event is made for GB. He might be a bit uncomfortable with the superficial politicking stuff but G Brown can has more genuine commitment to social justice in his little finger than anything Cleggron could muster in a month of Mondays. (Oh I do love a mixed metaphor!)

Hello Molesworth. I noticed on another thread that your MP is Rifkind - he was the MP of the constituency I grew up in. I used to work at a riding centre he came to, he was always very pleasant. Don't know what sort of MP he made as I was too young.

Do you know if Clegg's speech is on the net?

Clegg's speech

Cameron's speech

I haven't watched either of these yet.

Re: Rifkind, he was against the war, which is one thing in his favour!

MmeLindt · 04/05/2010 18:48

Is Clegg a MNetter. He talked about a clique of MNetters bankers.

MmeLindt · 04/05/2010 18:50

Some of the audience went for a wee during Cameron's rather bland speech. Chairs behind him are empty.

blahblahblah

Read about this, will need to listen when have some peace. I am in awe of how politicians maintain the momentum though.

Beachcomber · 04/05/2010 18:55

Good on Cameron for facing the empty seats showing his face at Citizens UK. Would be interesting the see the complete speeches of both DC and NC.

Very bad of Cameron's advisers not to have found a couple of spare people to fill those seats.

Hard to compare when we only have the short versions of the speeches.

atlantis · 04/05/2010 19:04

I already said on another thread that this is a great speech, If the idiots people who had run his campaign, ie; that dick muppet campbell and the odious prince of darkness meddlesome had book him in to more venues like this instead of those stupid meet and greets a lot more people would have been impressed than are now.

This is Brown at his best and yes he wiped the floor with NC, who repeated the same bankers speech over and over yesterday (he's getting tiring tired now) and DC did very well because it's his Big Society that citizen's UK is aimed at Brown did best.

Molesworth · 04/05/2010 19:06

Totally agree about crap labour campaign team atlantis. I really am starting to wonder if they haven't stitched GB up on purpose

janeite · 04/05/2010 19:07

Is there a transcript of this anywhere? It keeps cutting out on me.

atlantis · 04/05/2010 19:08

Tbh molesworth I wouldn't trust Campbell and Mandelson if my life depended on it if I was Brown, could it possibly be payback from Blair and a way to by-pass Balls and shove Miliband into the top job I wonder?

Molesworth · 04/05/2010 19:09

I wouldn't be at all surprised if that were the case atlantis.

Dunno about transcripts janeite - there must be one somewhere? Got to dish up dinner now or I'd be googling!

It was brilliant. I'm sure I saw this on YouTube... will search for a link.

When I hear all the nonsense from others, empty words about change, and then see this, I realize again how important it is to believe in stuff. Like equality and fairness and collective responsibility. And how refreshing it is to hear conviction instead of inane buffer. Brilliant.

atlantis · 04/05/2010 19:13

I wouldn't rely on the transcript as it was more the passion he showed, he had fire in his belly and he was in his element, the atmosphere of the crowd was brill.

WilfSell · 04/05/2010 19:14

Bloody phone... buffer was supposed to read puffery...

MmeLindt · 04/05/2010 19:14

Transcript here

Did you see the interview that Blair gave yesterday, smarmy git. "Vote for the party, not for the person".

I agree that the campaign has been handled badly. It has only been in the last week or so that he has begun to get his message out.
