Greens adopt policy treating Zionism as racism

The Greens have formally adopted a policy which equates Zionism with racism, a move that will dismay the bulk of the party’s MPs and has alarmed some Jewish members.

In a vote on Sunday at the party’s annual conference in Brighton about whether to back a motion which calls for Zionism, the movement for a Jewish state, to be “treated as any other form of racism”, it passed by 1,022 votes to 813.

The motion, which is now formal policy for the Greens in England and Wales, also calls for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel “with equal rights for all”.

Four of the party’s five MPs have condemned the motion, as did Caroline Lucas, the former leader who was the Greens’ first MP.

Adrian Ramsay, who co-led the Greens before Polanski, said in a statement he would vote against it, as it set out what sort of Palestinian state should exist without taking into account the self-determination of Israelis and Palestinians.

Siân Berry, another of the MPs, made the same point.

Carla Denyer, the Bristol Central MP who was co-leader with Ramsay, said the wording “risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people, including those who vehemently disagree with the Israeli government”.

Another Green MP, Ellie Chowns, said the motion “risks fuelling division, and risks undermining the party’s ability to advocate effectively for justice and peace”.

The European Green Party have asked our Green Party wtaf is going on.

Good! Blimey if the European Green party are asking them wtf? they really are in trouble. deservedly.

The European Green Party have asked our Green Party wtaf is going on.

That's a strong statement.

The resolution “Zionism is Racism” as voted yesterday goes against our agreed positions of the EGP and its Member Parties, therefore as EGP we unequivocally distance ourselves from it.

They have realised that a certain cultural audience is bigger than the envrionmental audience.

They have no morals!

I won’t be popular for this but here goes.

Gaza has become a mental illness for a lot of people.

Of course there are many moderate, sensible supporters, but there is also a significant crowd who have become frankly demented - to them there is literally nothing that matters aside from Gaza, and this means they have zero empathy for anyone or anything else and fully expect everyone to get on board with them OR ‘you LOVE genocide’.

trigger warning

Their antisemitism is fucking vile and 1930s-esque. I’ve seen MANY laughing emojis on stories about children murdered on 7/10, icons of rats, people saying Hitler didn’t go far enough or finish the job.

What I’ve noticed is the ‘support’ seems to be clustered around, or radiate from, places that consider themselves ‘victims of colonialism, so we know how Gaza feels’. Like a white middle class man living in Edinburgh, or Dublin, has any idea what it’s like to be bombed, sniped or suffer an amputation without general anaesthetic. This isn’t even about Gaza for them, it’s yet another excuse to vent their bitterness at ‘the English’ and cast themselves as sad victims, via their ‘allyship’ with Palestine. Anyone who desperately wants to distance themselves from ‘colonialism’ hops aboard and together they indulge in a massive moan-fest about how oppressed they feel and how terrible England/Israel are.

OF COURSE I feel empathy and horror at the women and children maimed and killed in Gaza. I abhor all violence toward innocent civilians. I haven’t shielded myself from the more horrifying footage and I think Netanyahu needs to answer for all of it in some kind of court or official inquiry, because we need answers as to what was done and how it was ‘justified’.

But honestly a lot of it is just pure antisemitism by a very vile bunch of people, and the Greens are capitalising.

OVienna · 05/10/2026 19:14

The party has been 'captured', that is all there is to it.

Douglasmummy · 05/10/2026 19:16

I think if the leadership had come out afterwards to say they disagreed with the motion and would be working on ways to remove it then it would maybe have dampened down a bit. But they have had no leadership from Polanski apart from him liking a tweet telling people ' you lost, get over it'. Having Salma Yaqoob being the only one saying Jewish Greens wouldn't be disciplined for going to synagogue when she was one of the architects of the motion and presumably one of the people who refused to amend it to make it clear that they would not be. Sinister that she was not willing to put the protecting in writing if she meant it.

I agree with this. It is the only way to explain the sort of support I've seen from people now voting for the Greens who only voted with their pocketbook before and wouldn't have given the Greens a look in, when they were 'only' interested in the environment.

The party has been 'captured', that is all there is to it.

That's how the former Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron put it. And I think it sums the situation up succinctly.

The question is, what can Polanski possibly say about the European Green Party wanting to distance themselves from the UK Green Party as a result of a vote that he allowed to happen?

Might it enter his dim brain that he just might have fucked up...

Yep.

It never ever ever ceases to amaze me how utterly blind people can be in the face of Islamism.

Far right politics are a threat, they have always been a threat. But you (regardless of your race or nationality) are FAR more likely to die in an act of jihadist terror here, than in a far right attack. By a magnitude of 9 or 10 I believe.

So reading about how people are ‘terrified of the far right’ but hand wave away this inconvenient fact as ‘racism’ is mind boggling.

Islamism should have no influence in British politics. I don’t want any religion to influence our laws but Islamic countries are the worst for human rights abuses, misogyny, executions and blasphemy laws.

So reading about how people are ‘terrified of the far right’ but hand wave away this inconvenient fact as ‘racism’ is mind boggling.

Couldn’t agree more.
In my mostly left leaning friendship circles people are always eager to criticise Trump/Musk/Farage (fair enough), but not so much ‘From the river to the sea’ chants and ‘anti-Zionism’.

Douglasmummy · 05/10/2026 19:22

Interesting that in their statement they said that they had expressed their concern before this so many people had expressed concern and the party completely ignored it. They are done.

I’ve just had a tearful conversation with my uni child who has had a horrible conversation with her flatmates who are fully supportive of this motion. This is the reality. It’s horrible.

Yes, he should. I think he's just a useful idiot to them, though. When I've argued about the Green Party people say to me; "they can't be antisemitic and bigoted - their leader is Jewish and gay!"

shes not a first year. These are good friends of her who know full well she’s Jewish. I’ve advised her she needs to go to JSOC tomorrow for peer support and see how others are coping. She says it won’t affect their friendship but I’ve told her she needs to agree with them it’s a topic they’re not going to discuss as they won’t agree she wants to preserve their friendship. I’m furious and obviously they’re white privileged middle class males who have never met a Jew before her

Oh ffs. Good call to go to the JSoc. Also, could she get support from UJS?
It's a good idea to tell her housemates about boundaries.
Insensitive, ill informed idiots.
