Farage receives second £36m donation in two days.

Reform’s biggest donor Christopher Harborne matched record donation given on Friday by fellow cryptocurrency billionaire Ben Delo

I have to think that if Labour received 2 x £36m donations, the Tories and Reform wouldn’t be trying to get the law changed retrospectively.
If they do this, it seals their fate at the next election. People vote on principle and this underhanded motion will linger in the mind.

There would be a national strike, the unions would bring the country to a standstill.

The Unions collectively donate but it's a donation made up from millions of workers who voted to opt in for political donations. Very different from a single person donating money

Edited

Yes, I had considered that possibility, but clearly the UK cannot carry on like this.

A government held to ransom by the unions
and back benches who do not represent the private sector tax payer, is absurd.

Some very difficult choices need to be made.

I think if people vote on principle and dislike the underhand, Reform have given far more to linger in the mind. Objectively speaking.
Regardless, as the survey posted earlier in the thread showed, the vast majority of people support the cap.
The majority of people also do not want a Reform government, so I think Labour have little reputational damage to worry about here.
If you support Reform and/or hate Labour it can be hard to see beyond your own opinion, but the surveys are useful for getting the wider view from outside your bubble.

I suggest that most people largely vote in pursuit of their own self interests.

"It’s all very grubby"

Especially when the money is going to Reform.

Democracy is great, we believe wholeheartedly in democracy........except when people vote for Brexit.

Keep misinterpreting people to try and fit your own agenda. Doesn’t look good, it’s all a bit sad.

Labour are showing their hand by trying to impose caps on other parties, bar theirs via unions. Of course they want to carve out their millions.

Yes of course but a great many people consider voting on principle to be in their self-interest. Also if you were socialised/raised to believe strong public services are in your self-interest then that's how you vote.

The idea that people have different political priorities is a not new concept is it?

You seem unable to understand that in every country there are large chunks of voters who view the world differently to you.

Like it or not union contributions are small donations from large numbers of people, which is clearly different to large donations from small numbers of people.

If Harborne wants to set up a political donation platform that would be a different thing.

It's important to try to look at what something IS.

(I'm not a supporter of any party. I'm very keen on voter power over donor power.)

So they can donate directly to Labour. Cap unions and people can pay directly instead.

ShitHoleDweller · Today 07:11

Im not sure I realised how in bed with the unions labour was. Now I understand why they keep giving out pay rise after pay rise.

Yes I think most do. However there are very wealthy individuals and people on high incomes who support Labour and Reform gets a big chunk of support from people disproportionately dependent on the welfare state, so its not always that straight forward.

That's a possibility I suppose but not something that concerns me personally even though I'm not a Labour supporter.

The union donations result from individual authorisations so can be traced back to each person which is adequate for transparency to me. The relationship is also transparent plus the union request.

I know you are personally very anti-Labour so your views are pretty skewed.

this is a massive over simplification. People don’t join unions in order to donate to Labour. Many members won’t even be Labour supporters.

Each individual has to tick the box on political donations.

It's not 1970.

I think it's disrespectful to say union members are too stupid to understand. They get multiple communications about the links between union and politics.

It's not some conspiracy only you understand.

It’s you and Labour that’s skewed. It’s typical of Labour to try to keep millions alone. Of course some will be ok with that as you are but Labour are protecting themselves first.

If people want to back Labour they can donate directly.

How many times must I state I don't support any political party.

I just happen to disagree with you about how unions operate.

You never seem willing to discuss politics without making it party political. It's very simplistic and dull.

EasternStandard · Today 07:24

As an aside the rhetoric from Labour re the donors is hyperbolic and is showing their panicking.

Times talking about Delo as someone Burnham and Reynolds pretend to want to be here as wealth creators, but now the two are bad people personified according to the business secretary.

Reform really do make them jump in any direction.

And you set the tone with the skewed part, I can discuss with those who don’t do that. It’s too simplistic and dull.

We all know you hate Labour, you've said it thousands of times across hundreds of threads.

What is the state of modern politics? What's next? Where is the world going?

Ha. There’s always the everyone back Labour threads if pp can’t see criticism.

concertinacornflake · Today 07:42

I think everyone, including those Reform voters themselves who hope for a political system that better prioritises the needs of the population, has cause to think carefully about whether their interests will be advanced in a world with massive donations from single overseas or even UK donors.

I don't care who hates which party, every voter's needs would be better served if all parties were focused on a wide pool of people.

None of the parties serve all equally, and none see the world the same way, and that's fine. But they all need to be looking to a broad pool IMO.

There was SO many conservative hate threads when they were incumbent and yet now if someone says they hate Labour it’s a show stopper!

I cannot stand their politicians. I cannot stand that they are weak and frightened of staying facts and truths because their back benchers will be angry and their most extreme constituents will start shouting. I can’t stand any of the left wing politicians who enjoy capitalist lifestyles including having second homes and being landlords but they literally can’t say it. They fall over their words on live TV, obfuscate and change the subject. The champagne socialism sticks in my craw. Just admit that you are part of the dirty game of materialism, you’re putting yourself and your family first always - like everyone else, and your kids are in excellent schools, you live in leafy suburbs, but your privilege sits uncomfortably with your (mostly) white guilt so you soothe it by siphoning money off towards those you pity.

Its the sycophancy alongside the hypocrisy that makes me want to barf.

Yep. And this hyperbolic language over the two donors from a business secretary just shows how weak and panicking they are.

But generally yes to all this, you’ve put it well.
