Sorry, millions are fleeing this terrible regime plus hundreds of thousands who were translators and otherwise helping the Allied Forces.... How the fuck did the Taliban win then - the numbers are not adding up!

Also, you give them sanctuary - by which I mean - you pay for their private health insurance, their private school, their food and their housing privately - just for one person and his family, OK? Don't push this onto the British dispossessed. Please. People don't want them living next to them, people don't want local GPs overrun, people don't want overcrowded classrooms. Please.

My impression is that of the millions fleeing Afghanistan, most have settled nearby - probably in the hope of being able to return at some point.

Pakistan is sending back most Afghan refugees, with force in most cases.

The number of Afghans in the UK is actually pretty small. They are certainly not overrunning your GP surgery or overcrowding your kids' classrooms.

If you don't want people living next door to you simply because of where they have come from, then that says more about you than it does about them. Perhaps if you took the time to get to know them, you might feel differently.

I would have no problem at all living next door to a family from Afghanistan, so stop trying to be the voice of the nation. It doesn’t wash.

What is happening to women there, at the hands of an extreme right wing theocracy, is horrendous.

The perpetrators of crimes against women, whether here or in Afghanistan, should not be given sanctuary, I agree.

But there are no reliable "rape charts" and a small minority of Afghan men committing sexual offences doesn't make all Afghan men rapists.

Afghan men are not all synonymous with the Taliban, and you actually have no idea whether the people who have come to the UK "want to treat women the same" - they have chosen to leave the Taliban regime and they will all have their reasons for making that choice.

As for Islam, there are many different interpretations of it. I abhor the repressive Islamist regime in Afghanistan, but I know many Muslims who are as horrified by it as I am. It certainly doesn't represent how all Muslims choose to live by their faith.

Condem the Taliban and all forms of misogyny, and I will join you. Prosecute and deport men who commit sexual offences, and I will support you. But as soon as you start making sweeping generalisations about people based on their nationality or religion alone, then you've lost the argument.

All the 'Western' nations abandoned Afghanistan and thousands of Afghans who helped us in the war, most of whom will have been killed and their families murdered, alongside millions of ordinary citizens.

We abandoned the war because Afghanistan is basically unwinnable due to its millennia-old tribal structures, networks and hierarchies. There are still incredibly brave Afghan rebel factions, whom we're now unable to help. Some of those rebels, when they've been betrayed, make it out of the country at huge personal cost.

@MsAmerica, did you know that women's and girls' voices have now been criminalised? They mustn't speak in public, even to another woman. They aren't allowed to sing under any circumstances. A man can beat a woman of his household if he thinks she's speaking too loudly.

@HollyhocksandPeons try watching and reading some of the excellent materials about what's happened there. You can't see anything of what's happening now because all media are banned. I've just finished the BBC's Kabul series, which follows a small group of people trying to leave safely during the fall. For books try war reporter Christina Lamb, who not only lived through it and understands the politics, but truly loved Afghanistan as it was.

The men inflicting their backward views on women are the ones that are entering our country so no, I don’t think they should be given sanctuary.
