What I don't get about Angela Rayner

Is how can she be a serious contender for PM, when she stood down as deputy PM for shady dealings?

It rendered her not good enough for no 2 but oh it's fine for her to look at the top job!

Does not compute, could someone explain?

I agree I don't know how she thinks she can fix her PR well enough to win, but her "shady" dealings are insignificant compared to Johnson and he reamins popular. She certainly didn't accept £5m from a foreign crypto bloke in order to run for a position she said she didn't want, and that doesn't seem to have done him any harm.

The main problem for Rayner is that she's a (very) working class woman and even the working classes, subconciously believe that to be competent in government you need to be male and/or from the ruling classes, or at least appear as if you might be.

TheFairyCaravan · 12/05/2026 08:58

Ahhh good. If we can’t have Angela Rayner because of her shady dealings then that rules out Farage, Tice, Jenrick and Zahawi too, right because their dealings are a lot more shady.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 12/05/2026 08:12

It never did with the Tories.

No it didn’t, but perhaps it should

Fozzleyplum · 12/05/2026 09:15

My recollection is that AR tried to blame the firm of conveyancers, but that was shown to be untrue when the firm went public on the fact that they explicitly do not give tax advice and that AR was well aware of that.

Polanski is also up this morning for not only lying about 2 serious jobs that he never had, but also failing to pay council tax plus some other things..

Denim4ever · 12/05/2026 09:18

Lammy also dodgy and didn't step down

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 12/05/2026 09:23

Polanski is a chancer and so is Farage. The country gives them a free pass and has with Farage for decades! The public are fools and although I’m not a Rayner supporter, she’s clearly got complex family arrangements and has tried to sort out her dc whilst pursuing her very full time job and her own needs.

Grumpyeeyore · 12/05/2026 09:38

when it came out in news I looked into the type trust she had done and it took me 5 minutes on hmrc website to work out you had to pay tax. I don’t think it was shady or deliberate - just lazy and incompetent. She’s lost all credibility now to run the economy when she can’t do her own finances. It wasn’t the first time the right wing media came for her so she should have known better especially when the lawyers warned her to get advice.

She stood down for screwing up her tax affairs. We don’t actually know whether it was shady or not.

Maddy70 · 12/05/2026 10:22

She put herself forward for investigation and she was found not to have done anything wrong

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 12/05/2026 10:32

Well Peter Mandelson was sacked twice and we all knew he was dodgy but that didn't stop him getting a top job did it?

I think it's a sign of how shit most of them are.

By whom? I think the HMRC investigation hasn’t concluded yet.

ProudAmberTurtle · 11/05/2026 21:37

Doesn't look like she wants to run.

To be fair she'd be better than Ed Milliband

That's a very low bar!

NellieJean · 12/05/2026 11:24

If only her tax arrangements were her biggest problem. She is intellectually and in her political “ideas” completely unfit to lead this country. Try and imagine her in a meeting with Trump.

I don’t like her. I absolutely do not want her to be PM.

But no one is intellectually unfit for a meeting with Trump.

CurlewKate · 12/05/2026 11:40

I can easily imagine her in a meeting with Trump. The snobbery she faces is spectacular!

Yes, I was wondering how she would get on on the international stage. You can't be just prime minister of domestic things. You have to wade out into international relationships, whether you want to or not. Edit to say It wouldn't only be Trump she'd meet. She might get on fine with him. There would be several other leaders from other countries as well.

AbundantFlowers · 11/05/2026 22:50

She was advised by a legal person that her tax arrangements were fine! It’s not shady.
She’d be great. Much better than any man.

No she wasn’t! She used some middle of nowhere conveyancer to do her property sale and they told her to get further advice (and didn’t!).

She then tried to throw them under the bus but they came out swinging. She is a disgrace. She used her disabled sons’s trust fund to fund her flat in Brighton. Her boyfriend has been fired by Labour and is known as very left wing/approaching Marxist who attends picket lines.

Her son of course gained a share of the house he lived in however unless I have missed something - why would you get your son to buy your share of the house. Surely in your will you would leave it to them at no cost. All this nesting rubbish. If AR moves 100’s of miles away from son the chances of her seeing him very often are minimal. Wasn’t she reported as getting very drunk and face planting a door at the House of Commons.

She is not fit for office.

The investigation is still ongoing. Why do you think she has been cleared.

BTW - what is taking so long?

How many times was Boris Johnson sacked?

Are you really saying that someone who doesn't make absolutely certain to pay the right amount of tax when in public office and gets so drunk she walks into doors should even be considered for p.m?

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 14/05/2026 09:57

Somersetbaker · 14/05/2026 09:33

Exactly, these days doing anything wrong in politics doesn't seem to be a sackable offence.

GreenCa · 14/05/2026 13:33

asdbaybeeee · 12/05/2026 06:54

Everyone remembers Boris right??? If Angela was a man no one would care what she did

I would. Many people did care and were unhappy about what Boris did. I, and am sure many others, apply the same criteria for fitness for public office to both men and women. It's about the person not their gender.

LilyCanna · 14/05/2026 13:47

Is the reason why everyone hates Ed Miliband that he takes climate change seriously?
I know the right wing press loathe him but I can’t work out that he’s done anything wrong beyond trying to actually do something about the fact that burning fossil fuels is causing irreversible damage to our basic life support systems.

Yeah I think that’s pretty much it
