House of Commons vote today against MP’s suspension

Is anybody else as horrified by the vote today by Tory MPs to stop Owen Paterson being suspended after being found guilty of inappropriate lobbying? I have sympathy for his wife’s death but surely this overturning of an impartial investigation’s findings is another reason to believe that this party is totally out of touch with most of the population and mainly about their own interests.

I really don’t know who I would vote for these days.

I am. Completely appalled. I can't quite believe they would be so blatant about changing the rules to protect one of their mates.

noblegiraffe · 03/11/2021 17:02

Why might the Tories want to make it easier to get away with taking bribes?

People in Tory areas should be writing to their MP asking why exactly they voted for this seedy, corrupt bill. Only 11 Tories voted against, only two non-Tories voted for (one DUP, one independent).

The party need to own this.

Here is the voting record

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/11/2021 17:06

It's absolutely disgraceful.Angry

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/11/2021 17:13

And another reminder that BJ's Conservative Party can and will do whatever they want. Our government is an elected dictatorship.AngrySadAngry

Gingernaut · 03/11/2021 17:41

I am livid about this.

We are a corrupt laughing stock.

Paterson and Rees-Mogg need to resign, as does Johnson.

MakemineaGandT · 03/11/2021 23:03

It’s appalling and indefensible. Perhaps more people will start to sit up and notice that this government has lost the plot.

DrRamsesEmerson · 04/11/2021 06:53

And yet only a handful of people on here are bothered enough to comment...

Sarcobaleno · 04/11/2021 07:19

It's very worrying. It feels like every new low is acceptable.

Rupertpenrysmistress · 04/11/2021 07:29

It is so tiring to see and hear the way our incompetent government work, I don't know what to say, they are in it for themselves, they despise low/middle class earners and show this with every decision they make.

They must all be laughing at us whilst we work and pay their increased taxes and they benefit from every decision.

The amount people have lost through covid, whilst they have made record amounts for themselves. We are literally watching what for normal people would be criminal offenses whilst they laugh.
Frankly, it's terrifying, I feel for the low paid workers and the children. I am an NHS nurse and I could cry with the state we are in..

rrhuth · 04/11/2021 07:33

I think very many people are worried about it. Clearly the whole episode sticks and the Tories are getting more visibly corrupt bythe day.

I think that Cummings might be right that Johnson is getting his ducks in a row for when he himself is before the standards committee!

rrhuth · 04/11/2021 07:33

sticks = stinks

angstridden2 · 04/11/2021 07:34

Agree that it’s worrying that so few posters have commented. One of the things that upsets me most is the feeling that this party have always been in the pockets of big business,. They gave jobs to the boys, but now they’re holding the public in too much contempt to even bother pretending otherwise.

Horrified at this government and the lack of scrutiny by the media.

Yesterday was something special even for them, they are an elected dictatorship now, grifters, liars and barefaced cheats.

Yes it’s sad too how few comment on this, and if there was an election tomorrow they’d be voted back in.

There is no credible opposition or mainstream media prepared to ask the questions.

Eve · 04/11/2021 07:51

Owen Paterson even voted!! He was allowed to vote for himself!

speakupattheback · 04/11/2021 07:54

I am appalled. I just feel I've run out of words to describe my feelings of disgust and fear that this government instils in me.

kirinm · 04/11/2021 07:55

It's sickening and it's also tedious to hear people say there is no one else to vote for or this credible opposition. Labour are a credible opposition and would be a hell of a lot better than the current crop of corrupt halfwits in power at the moment.

dannydyerismydad · 04/11/2021 07:59

I'm disgusted that these MPs even have time for these highly paid consultancy roles.

The rest of us working in the public sector have seen increased workload, pay and hiring freezes and no budget for overtime. We are working ourselves ragged while they have the time for a second job to top up their already substantial incomes.

SunnySomer · 04/11/2021 08:02

I don’t really post much on here - I looked last night to see if it was being discussed and was astonished to see no mention at all.
It’s appalling. I feel like I’m watching the unravelling of the world I knew in a horrible slow-mo; every day for the last six years brings a new horror. But I genuinely don’t know what I can do.

ninnynonny · 04/11/2021 08:05

I am genuinely at a point with this country and the corruption and the pain I see in my job and everywhere else, and the lack of being able to actually do anything; that if I had no kids and grandkids, I would seriously consider not being here anymore.
There seems to be nothing we can do to stop this and it's horrific

countrygirl99 · 04/11/2021 08:09

There is hope. FIL, a true devotee of Boris, has finally seen the light and if he has others will follow. They really haven't read the room on this one.

rrhuth · 04/11/2021 08:12

@Eve

Owen Paterson even voted!! He was allowed to vote for himself!
Yes, this was an extra treat!
HerLadySheep · 04/11/2021 08:15

It's shocking, I've just heard Chris Bryant describing it as being "like Russia" and yet still so many don't notice or care. Utterly baffling!
The Daily Facist does make a big deal of it on their front page today so hopefully the tide will turn but I am not confident

Kendodd · 04/11/2021 08:18

The worst thing for me is knowing this won't make a single bit if difference to their voters.

Where's @Clavinova to explain how it's all completely correct and with utmost integrity?

Palavah · 04/11/2021 08:19

It's scandalous. Please write to your MPs and/or local conservative party if you agree.
