WTF are Frothers? Have you seen them around and wondered? Not a quiche, but a protest group. Tory, Labour, Lib Dems - Common Goal - Protest Against the Cuts

What are the Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

Come and join us.

just seen it garlic. I am wary of hitler mention's, change to 'the beginnings of dictatorship' or similar? just wary of being dismissed via godwin's law.

action I reckon should be to write to your mp's and ask them to uphold the amendments made by the HoL when it goes back to HoC?

TeWihara · 12/01/2012 17:07

I am still livid. I'm sure I read that HoL are not allowed to debate the same amendment twice, exactly to stp this happening.

garlicfrother · 12/01/2012 17:17

Agreed. Thanks.

TeWihara · 12/01/2012 17:19

You did a great job btw, really hard to write about these things.

HedleyLamarr · 12/01/2012 17:26

Great post garlic! Leave the 'Hitler' reference in, that is exactly who he started with: the disabled. Corroboration

garlicfrother · 12/01/2012 17:27

OK, Hitler is now "dictators in recent history "

Shame I can't justify posting a potted 1900-1914 history, though!

garlicfrother · 12/01/2012 17:29

Argh! I share Te's concern actually. It IS true, but "just like Hitler" is one of those things that makes people walk out the door I think.

KatieMiddleton · 12/01/2012 18:01

Workfare story on ITV news NOW.

KatieMiddleton · 12/01/2012 18:02

Sorry, in a minute. Top story is a nasty murder.

Peachy · 12/01/2012 18:24

I am so shaken by this; I gavce up two days to tweet and fight, the people behind the spartacus report- some ended in hospital with the stress.

What have I got? still no idea how ds3 will survive when I pass away, becuase according to Lord fraud there's probably a big inheritance coming his way- er where from please?- but then that's from a man who refers to disabled people as 'stock' and 'tehse people'.

I can't believe this is even allowed. it's not a democracy and renders the whole process useless.

Peachy · 12/01/2012 18:25

And yes- leave Hitler in! DH and I have got passports for us and the boys we are so worried, it IS like that.

TeWihara · 12/01/2012 18:25

Okay, off topic but I'm putting together the Food Bank thread, am planning on contrasting it with subsidised food/drink in HoC/L. I was thinking of pulling a few quotes from the thread in politics, should I PM the posters to ask permission or public demain blah de blah is it okay not to bother?

not planning on posting until their is a gap in the schedule, since there is spartacus and workfare stuff going on atm, so there is time to wait for replies.

TeWihara · 12/01/2012 18:26

putting together food bank post I meant

TeWihara · 12/01/2012 18:27

suing over workfare from another thread in politics

Peachy · 12/01/2012 18:30

Oh I slammed the phone down on my oldest mate last night after she A) referred to mobility cars as free and then said they still were after I explained how much people can pay for adaptations; and then went on to racism (dressed up as anti immigration) ending on how a mutual friend who is in a wheelchair and whose DD also is should ahve to choose which ones gets a chair, or put her DD on her lap (think severe CP and a painful bone condition.....)

And at baby gym Tuesday there was a crying woman and I was concerned: she was crying that she came here to make money (the UK), she wants to send her wages all home (married to quite an affluent chap by alla ccounts) but the government takes the money off her to give to lazy and disabled people who would be allowed to die in her country (no idea where that is).

So frankly

ARRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Peachy · 12/01/2012 18:31

Did everyone see the comment onj the Guardian blog yesterday from a rape victima ssessed by ATOS? Really, everyone should read- I will find a link. I almost threw up

garlicfrother · 12/01/2012 18:31

Technically you should credit Mumsnet for the quotes you use. I'd suggest doing what the Mail does: "on popular parenting site Mumsnet, 'garlicfrother' said" etc.

Might look at Hitler thing later, meanwhile everybody's free to post comments naming the "recent history" dictator! He manipulated a hung parliament to get his foothold, you know.

garlicfrother · 12/01/2012 18:33

Yes, that was horrendous. The assessor said she wasn't traumatised because she let him touch her (she was crying hysterically).

Shock
TeWihara · 12/01/2012 18:33

Oh Peachy,

what a shite 24 hours.

I heard there was a legal person on the spartacus team - do they know yet if what shithead Freud has done is allowed?

garlicfrother · 12/01/2012 18:36

Here's the 'rape' ATOS post:

gherkingirl
10 January 2012 5:50PM
I had a full blown panic attack in front of an Atos assessor and was so distressed that the receptionist refused to let me travel home alone and called me a cab. I got zero points for mental health and was passed 'fit for work'.

That was after I'd asked for a female assessor (as one of the reasons I'm claiming is for PTSD and other mental health issues after rape), was refused on the day and told if I didn't see the male assessor that my benefits would be stopped without appeal. Terrified I'd end up losing my flat, we soldiered through the assessment , getting the receptionist check online for a Polish-English translation of 'gallbladder' (the other reason I'm claiming) as the assessor didn't know what it was, only for me to freak out completely when he insisted on examining me physically without a chaperone. Despite sobbing and panicking during the exam, he then informed me that because I'd let him touch me, I was obviously lying about being raped and therefore couldn't have any of the mental health issues I said I had because I'd been raped. I was so distressed I don't really remember getting home and was affected for weeks, having to have my meds increased by the doctor.

Just to top it off, he gave me zero points for physical health as well and I had to appeal, leaving me in a financial black hole for months and very grateful for my overdraft.

There's a whisper on Twitter that the Commons has been suddenly adjourned... interesting.

Peachy · 12/01/2012 18:38

Bugger can't find it

Was on Guardian's story about this yesterday, at 5:57 but have lost link

basically woman signed off with PTSD after being raped, and with gallbladder issues. ATOS assessor needed translator as didn;t even know what a gallbladder was (?), and refused her rewquest for a female assessor initially then refused her request for a chaperone. Examinened her ophysically after insisting he must then claimed she could not have been raped as she allowed it.

Still angry now.

Peachy · 12/01/2012 18:38

Oh X posts

Thanks Garlic

Peachy · 12/01/2012 18:44
