In the absence of further u-turns (by no means unlikely) I expect:

  • falling student numbers
  • increased numbers of NEETS
  • bankruptcy and closing of many smaller universties
  • reduction of student numbers esp in arts and humanities' courses
  • increased numbers of legal cases of students sueing their universities for providing poor teaching

How's that for a start?

Oh, and huge reduction in students from poor/middle income families, v huge rise in students who were privately educated.

We may well need to get back to the 15% going to university which was the statistic when I went and jobs which clearly don't need a degree becoming non graduate. A very good thing.

It's the poor who get off lightly under the new scheme so you might find more of them go than the rich.

Useless ex polys which should have gone to the wall years ago may go and toilet paper degrees abolished.

It'# all to play for. It could be very good.

Ah no - we were both wrong.

It turns out that what the coalition plan is this:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1387697/More-A-grade-university-applicants-choice-ministers-end-cap-bright-pupils.html

Similar, but by the back door - as of course far more rich students whose parents can afford private education/tutors will get AAB than those at Bollocks Comp.

But that won't be taken into account.

Plus dumb down A Levels a bit more, up fees a bit more - and hey presto! we have places for the dimmish rich anywhere they like and places for the bright poor BUT they have to spend the rest of their working lives paying off the debt. So will probably choose not to go. So universities become rich only zone!

How I hate this government.

I wasn't happy about the numbers cap and Lord Browne's original proposal was for more of a free market. So this may be a good change.

The poor as we know pay the least under the new system.
