Hymn suggestions please...

I occasionally go through phases where I get excited about wedding plans and I'm currently in one of them phases! (I'm not getting married for a couple of years but I like to think about it and semi-plan).

We're having a Medieval wedding (less of the theme, we're doing it properly!) and I'm trying to think of hymns that will fit. I'm Pentecostal so they have to have that Medieval feel to them whilst still being Pentecostal worship songs. I've come up with three suggestions but two* whilst perfect in themselves, I'm not sure on because I had them at my first wedding (he said he doesn't care but I want to see if there are alternatives before I do that).

Songs I have:
Before the Throne of God Above*
Be Thou My Vision*
In Christ Alone

oh In Christ Alone is wonderful
as is Be Thou My Vision
and Before the Throne is nice too

In Christ Alone is a lovely hymn, and you didn't use at your first wedding.

Will You come and follow me (John Bell) is a wonderful hymn, that has a lilt to it, which I guess could be called mediaeval?

lol FAQ, no not really but I love all three too.

thirtypence, I'm looking at three so it's not a choice between them, just looking to see if there are alternatives - but he doesn't mind anyway.

MaryBS, I didn't think I knew that one but it sounds familiar, I think it needs to go on the list. I want to find it sung Pentecostal stylee

TBD said we can't have it Pentecostal because it doesn't fit with the Medieval "theme" (I hate saying theme, it sounds like a fancy dress party but I can't find an alternative either!) to the day but I think it can work nice, all three songs work as both at the same time.

no idea about whether its what you want as i am a bit dim re these things but i love far around the world

am possibly on the wrong trail here in terms of what constitutes Pentecostal hymns, but my favourite ones are
Love Divine (only with the correct tune)
And Can it Be, that I should gain (possibly not appropriate)
Praise my Soul the King of Heaven

thumb - which correct tuen - there are actually 2 official "correct" tunes

no Rowlands died in 1937, he was born in 1860 - but still long after the hymn was written

It's the one I grew up with in a Methodist Church but that doesn't mean much!

We'll have a band (with rather non-Medieval instruments, but we'll dress the musicians up and hope no one notices amongst everything else ) and will be rather upbeat. My daughter's funeral I choose a Delirious...? (Christian rock group) song (then complained it sounded like a funeral march I think I sort of forgot it was a funeral and I let my Grandad lead the singing ).

I'll post some links to those songs if I can find some to show what I mean.

ahhh now I sang both in the Methodist church (did I ever mention my mum was a fully accredited local preacher ), and I was confirmed with them too

I defected to the CoE so I could enjoy a glass of wine guilt free

FAQ - I am what is apparently known as a "wet" Methodist !

I'm enjoying reading it, sometimes it's good to look into the history of a song, it adds another level of meaning to it.

My parents were "wet" methodists too - I'll never forget Cliff College - camping, my parents smuggled whisky and port onto the campsite !

didn't say it had to be original, did I miss smartypants, just the correct "proper" one (imo!)

but it can't be "proper" (or correct) as Wesley would never have written a hymn without having a tune to go with it - bet one of his brothers wrote the original one.......

No no no no no! Blaenwern IS the proper one AFAIAC!!! I am not interested in historical accuracy, I like the one I KNOW and always sang and it's the best anyway so NERRR!

hmm - I don't know - Blaenwern best as congregational version, Stainer's setting beautiful with SATB choir

I don't have a "choir" at church - but I do get 4 part hymns on a Sunday morning - 1 (very strong and loud) bass, 2 tenors, 2 or 3 Altos, and then a couple of Soprano's the chip in with the odd hymn that has a descant

you are probably right - am just used to half empty churches where no one but me knows the alto line and the men are all too old to be loud enough or too young to even know there are B & T parts to sing!

that too - no I could never be bothered to get too heavily involved with the reality of Wicca - I have several books on it but it all seems too much like hard work and gettin up too early in the morning for me, who am a lazy wotsit.
But I do have magic thumbs!
