Do you let your children read his books?
They seem to be very anti Christian with adult themes.

Well only the one about satan shagging the old lady springs to mind, what’s wrong with the others?

NeverCleanAgain · 01/10/2022 22:03

My kids have read them but they’re grim - sexist, ageist, classist and racist. I can’t think much that is directly anti Christian but they’re not books I’d encourage any child to read unless they were absolutely refusing to read anything else.

Leakingroofagain · 01/10/2022 22:07

I haven't encouraged them, I'm not christian but I've seen they're very sexist. My dd got given a few of them but luckily isn't interested.

TwoMonthsOff · 01/10/2022 22:09

DW seems a bit prurient to me

EntertainingandFactual · 01/10/2022 22:12

I can’t help wondering what the David Walliams headlines will be in 20 years time.

He gives me the creeps.

I've not seen this one... thankfully

They’re dreadful- don’t feel bad about steering clear.

redredwineub40 · 01/10/2022 22:15

They're glaringly hackneyed and poor quality - my dd loved them aged about 8-9 and she bought them in second hand book shops or from the library and quickly moved on. I said I wouldn't waste money on them but wasn't going to stop her reading them.

Chockmyhay · 01/10/2022 22:16

He is as creepy as fuck and his books are supercilious sneers at fat people/ old people/ poor people. Nothing to do with bad Christian values just bad human ones

Libre2 · 01/10/2022 22:17

I think that was supposed to be a joke!

They are pretty rubbish to be honest. Not anti-Christian and I’m not sure I’d have labelled them racist or sexist really, but they’re just a bit “try hard to be like Roald Dahl” and endless pages of lists which aren’t funny and add nothing to the overall story.

Ah yes, maybe, I didn't get that, TBH not much would surprise me though!

I'm an atheist and I don't let them in the house.

@MrsTerryPratchett Just out of interest, why not?

MarigoldPetals · 02/10/2022 21:37

Christian parent here. I think I liked the books more than my kids did. I agree some of them have quite adult themes. I don’t see that religion comes into it at all though!

LaLaLouella · 02/10/2022 21:52

I'm an atheist and they don't go near my children as they are so poorly written it physically pains me to read them out loud....

Beautifulvue · 02/10/2022 21:53

sexist and racist writing IMO.

mnahmnah · 02/10/2022 21:53

DS received some as presents. We started reading them together and luckily he felt the same as me about them. Not pleasant. Terribly written. Steer clear!

Fairislefandango · 02/10/2022 21:56

Yep, same here, because they're dreadful. My dc agreed, fortunately (one of them was given one as a present and hated it).

typicalmner · 02/10/2022 22:00

He doesn’t appear to like women… I get annoyed and cringe reading them!

if that’s anti Christian - I don’t know!

does he give me the creeps? Yeah

JenniferBarkley · 02/10/2022 22:06

Yes another atheist here who's not a fan. We have one, and it's the only children's book I've ever truly disliked. We won't be buying more.

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 02/10/2022 22:15

Racist, fattist, sexist and full of clichéd tropes. Terrible. He makes me really angry. Promotes everything we'd hope our children wouldn't do / say/ be. Laughs at people. Mocks people. Unpleasant to say the least.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/10/2022 22:15

@Libre2 he's an untalented, cut-rate Dahl, who plays on lazy stereotypes and makes a shit ton load of money out of it.

Yuk.

Beautifulvue · 02/10/2022 21:53

Definitely this, poor Winnie in the demon dentist. Making fun of her diction, weight, clothing and writing a scene when she loses her clothes on barbed wire. Grim
