Do you believe in ghosts/the paranormal? If so, why?

I'm very interested to see if anyone has had any paranormal experiences. I have never seen a "ghost" but i do believe there is something out there.

At the start of the year my Mum and I went to see psychics, if that's what you call them... We sat around a table with two others, glass in the middle of the table and letters all around the table. Sounds like a Ouija board but a professional one, if that makes sense.

My mums Nan came through, the things she was saying would have never been able to be found out through Facebook, the internet etc. On the way home we were trying to think of any rational explanation to the answers we got, but couldn't come to any conclusion!

Family members of mine have seen paranormal spirits but i never have, and not sure i want to!

Has anyone ever had any paranormal experiences?

We don't use 10% of our brains, we use 100%.

I'm torn.

I do not believe in a god.

I have had experiences or come across some in the family for which I have no explanation but I believe in the future we will probably find an explanation.

There was a really interesting documentary a few years ago. A woman was trained to not give away any tells, to basically not be cold or hot read.

They then filmed her with various psychics, the ones on TV could not get ANYTHING.

The only person who did is a hairdresser who doesn't think it is ethical to take money for readings.

I think I would like there to be something, I love ghost stories and I think some people have better intuition or at least listen to their intuition more.

sashh · 24/08/2018 12:58

If anyone is going to a psychic how about asking these questions.

What is it like there?

Can you explain what happened to people who have died/disappeared in unusual circumstances eg Elisa Lamb, MM, Jill ?

Where are you?

sashh · 24/08/2018 13:02

Oh just thought

There is a great film on youtube called, 'ghosts on the underground', well worth a watch.

twosunbathingdogs · 24/08/2018 13:11

I believe that consciousness and energy can live on after a person has died. I believe this because I have experienced it.

I am not sure about psychics because I think a lot of them are unscrupulous people with no ability who prey on others; however, I do believe that there might be some genuine psychics, but they are pretty rare.

abbieo · 24/08/2018 13:25

sashh - I'm the exact same. I don't necessarily believe in a God but i believe there is something when we die.. yeah i see what you mean. Maybe those questions have been asked before, i don't know. It's hard to explain who i saw but they're not psychics, if you have Facebook, look up "Heavenly Voices". They're based in Poole, Dorset. They're honestly amazing! Ooo yeah i'll have a look at that on YouTube :)

twosunbathingdogs - Yeah i completely agree. A lot of psychics are full of shit that make up things as they go alone.. i think anyone can fake being a psychics to be honest. Just say "Someone in you know has died", "Someone in your family has a dog". Ridiculous things like that haha

There was an amazing guy in Manchester, late 90s I first saw him did tarot readings.
Told me loads of stuff that happened but also told me specifically what wouldn't happen and it actually did!
Trust me this wasn't something that was common in 1998!!!

abbieo · 24/08/2018 14:06

stressedtiredbuthappy - Oh wow that's crazy! I do my own tarot cards sometimes but don't really pay attention much as i'm not great at them. I did my friends cards a few months ago and it said a man was going to come into her life, and that she would find love. We were laughing about it and thinking "Yeah right!" As she is 23 and never had a proper boyfriend! A couple weeks later she met someone and they've been together and they're still together! It didn't click until we starting thinking about doing tarot cards again

If you consider amazing I can see how you were so easily taken for a ride by a “psychic”. 23 year old woman has interest from male. Wow. Astounding.

abbieo · 24/08/2018 14:24

Iwasjustabouttosaythat - Did i say a psychic said that? Hahahah oh dear!!

Abbieo I'm getting the feeling you aren't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat was making the point that the general level of naivety and credulousness that you demonstrated when you told us that you believed you had correctly 'read' your friends tarot cards because they told you that she would meet a man (as a 23 year old single woman) is quite telling.

It indicates that you would probably be the exact type of person to be taken in by a 'psychic' of some description.

Our earlier conversations on here only reinforce that point.

Unfortunately people like you keep these charlatans in business and allow them to prey on the insecurities of the vulnerable.

abbieo · 24/08/2018 19:38

Now you're calling me stupid for my beliefs? You're acting like a bellend. Fuck off and leave me alone. You must have no life at all to be randomly picking on people. Genuinely feel sorry for you. You don't know me or what's going on in my life so stop acting like a cunt

OP posts:
Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 25/08/2018 06:25

OP, you’re incredibly defensive. You asked if people believe and some said no and told you why. Then you went on a rant about how you’re so open minded all the while screeching about how no one can change your “beliefs”. It’s not patriarchy that’s acting like a bellend, though you have very nicely shown how often those that believe in the supernatural are not the best with logic.

Vitalogy · 25/08/2018 07:02

You said what I've been thinking for a long time, sorry Pat.

abbieo · 25/08/2018 07:32

Vitalogy - People like that really annoy me. If you don't believe in the paranormal then fair enough i understand. But don't make me feel stupid because our beliefs are different! Ah well. They'll find someone else to piss off soon!

I believe in the paranormal as part of my religion. However, we are not allowed to go to psychics as part of the religion. Dreams are allowed I been told. My grandmother gets dreams and they are almost like premonitions, but she says she needs to be guided in the dream and shown things for it to be true. So far I don't remember any dream she said she been shown that were false and most importantly neither can people older than me that I have asked.

PatriarchyPersonified · 25/08/2018 09:07

Abbieo

I fully agree that there is nothing wrong with believing different things, but lets recap on what you have done on this thread:

  1. You made some silly claims about a 'psychic' you have recently seen who it turned out used a oujii type method
  1. It was politely pointed out to you that oujii is easily disprovable nonsense
  1. You immiediately become aggressive and defensive
  1. You accuse me of being 'closed minded' while stating that 'nothing would make you change your mind'
  1. You then attempted to back up your claims about the occult by stating you 'read' your friends tarot and they told you she would soon meet a man. (As a 23 year old single woman)
  1. It was again pointed out to you that this is just silly
  1. You then got aggressive and abusive

Nobody has 'made you' feel stupid. You have acted in a stupid manner.

abbieo · 25/08/2018 09:14

Pat - You think the things i have said is stupid and silly, that's fine if you think that, i wont lose any sleep over it :) Goodbye!

Earthmoon - Oh thats cool :) What is your religion?

I thought this would be a light hearted woo thread!

The title of the post is asking if you DO believe and why?

BuffyBee · 26/08/2018 13:21

These threads are supposed to be a bit of fun but are always spoiled by the very serious people.

So yeah!

It would have been a bit of light-hearted Whoo but the thread killers have won.

Shame!

I know someone who went to a reading and her twin who'd died was mentioned as being 'there', except she didn't know she had a twin but her parents admitted it when she went home, they'd kept it from her.

Earthmoon · 27/08/2018 18:45

I'm a muslim. We believe in jinns, who I can't provide the correct definition of. Read about them, they are intriguing in my opinion and I was petrified of them in my youth thanks to my older brother.

Vitalogy · 27/08/2018 19:15

jinn
[dʒɪn]

NOUN
jinns (plural noun)
(in Arabian and Muslim mythology) an intelligent spirit of lower rank than the angels, able to appear in human and animal forms and to possess humans.Compare with genie.
"the rebellious jinn lead men astray"

abbieo · 27/08/2018 19:15

mikado1 - that's incredible! Bet her parents were gobsmacked when she came home and said that!

Earthmoon - oh cool 😊 I've never heard of jinns before, I'll defi itely look it up :)
